Blade (1998)
5/10
OK, But could have been better
27 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Blade is supposed to be a Dhampyr (child of a male vampire and living woman). This is a well established legend and the story of the comics. Why on earth they go about changing the 'bible on vampires' making it some fluke of a 'biting gone bad.' Whistler was well done, and Blade was done true enough to the original character. As an action film it is more than satisfactory.

I couldn't stand that they were working a 'cure.' As if anything that could make the blood suckers would or even could be based in science. Heck, the vampires weren't even half the beast they should be. I am not a purest to fantasy, Vampire can but don't have to be weak to crosses, rose wood, or garlic, but either make something new or don't; don't butcher an ancient and complex mythos like the Vampyr or Lycanthorp. In "From Dusk til Dawn" they establish that these creatures are vampire like and may have established the legend, but that they can't know. In "John Carpenter's Vampires" and it's sequel they establish they are creating a mythos, but it is still mythic. Blade makes the same same mistake we would see in Underworld, but at least they were not adapting something else and changing it to the nth degree. In fact you could almost say they did try to make a new story, but the comic book for Blade was well established before they ever tried to make a movie as a fantasy based vampire story (except for that one guy who dated black cat but that was really complicated).

The biggest disappointment was the "Blood God" who went down faster than sororal cheerleader after 5 pint in a chug-fest.

Dune (2000– )
10/10
OK no Patty but still great...

So after years of waiting some one else realized that the book was too long to do justice in a simple movie (no matter how long). The acting was as beautiful as the sets. The "aliens" look surprisingly real for a TV mini-series.

But it is long. It should be long. Still you will need a whole Saturday or a couple of sittings to finish the whole thing.

The story arc is well managed, and is fast passed enough to keep from getting boring. The story is really engrossing. If he had finally finished the all the books I wish they would have done the same for the Riddick books as they have done for Dune.

Play the game first, like the game and you'll love the movie, (hate it and save the rental fee)

Some will say this movie is not worth seeing. Remember that this came out after Hercules: The Legendary Adventures and before The Lord of the Ring Trilogy. And It really is between them. While it is not intentionally campy it contain many of the "fantasy genre" jokes that come up when people play the game. At the same time it tries to be as serious as possible considering the budget it had to work with. Visual the movie really delivered (that is as for the expectations of the day). It is no, Lord of the Rings. It is not intended to be that kind of story. No one is dragged off to destroy the soul bearing ring of the second in command of Morgoth to save the world from hell on earth, but like most D&D games the fate of one kingdom will hang in the balance. The acting is better than Charmed, but less than an A+ (charmed fans, please don't kill me, I like the show {boy, I miss Cole (I'm not gay, he was just really cool {thank goodness for reruns})}). The movie is full of inside jokes and references, so it's only an okay movie if you have never played the game, if you got a slow day, it would be a fine a catch on Sci-fi, WAM, or the like. If you have played the game (and the more games the better) you will find yourself repeated saying "hehe, I love dwarfs," "is that a drow?," "dang, I did that same thing," "every newbie does that first time out," "Haha that is Rule Zero for you," or "at least he didn't do what I did, this one time..." with jovial cries.

The Title holds true the spirit of the D&D game world. But much like the Hulk, outsider and persnickety viewers throw their fits. I am a "Gamer" I know a number of the inside jokes, but frell every time I go back I get something new.

To sum up, it is not the greatest or worst movie of time. But if you have a penchant for fantasy but aren't a captious viewer, or if you are dating a "gamer" then it's not a bad jaunt to take, and it's one I would recommend.
