A bit difficult to watch
13 April 2024
White it's gettable what the movie tries to show, and it's real issues with an entertaining and well made plot, but still the motivations of characters are all a bit messed up and in the end, you end up feeling sad for most of them.

I liked this in a way as this was my first spanish film, and I was able to see many things that might reflect Spanish society, not in a postive/negative sort of way, but just in a raw manner.

Overall, It was a nice experience and it made me think about so many aspects, particularly body shaming, loneliness and madness within people. How small things can lead to big events, but I wouldn't recommend it as your usual weekend watch, as I wanted the film to end quickly at times.

Blood Diamond (2006)

What an experience, worth the wait.
24 February 2024
I found very early in my movie watching history that it's extremely difficult task to choose the ones which are worth to watch.

Blood Diamond has been waiting in that list for me watch since almost over 10 years now, I had it downloaded in my earlier PC, and I never saw it. I was postponing it on to morrow, I always knew it would be an experience, but never had the courage to exhaust one such film from my watchlist.

Today, I saw it, and, honestly, it's so worth the wait. As a kid, I might have under appreciated the importance of such cinema.

What happens in Africa, what has happened in the world for centuries has always fascinated me, the structure of power and the misuse of it in so many ways. At the same point, there is always the niceness of people, no one is bad just for the sake of it, but the tragedy of the circumstances is spectacular and this kind of a film does a lot more than a hundred articles could, as has been already observed.

Regardless, Leonardo will be always remembered as the actor of this time period, along with SRK to me, I can't love anyone more as an actor, except of course Jennifer Connelly for more than one reasons. I'd see this again sometime and have suggested numerous times already to others, will keep doing that with more intensity now, this story needs to be told, not for the sake of just Africa but humanity.

I'm feeling quite nice right now, nicest even in the ongoing year, so happy for this to be made.

Freaking genius and hilarious
8 December 2023
It's extremely rare to like a show as much I do here just in first 20 minutes.

Comedy has rightfully become the method to express everything, I love the maturity that can be expressed with jokes even in this genre.

The show is a funny retelling of how Catherine ruled Russia, the screenplay is crisp, the characterization is beautiful, I love every frame of it.

It's impressive how intelligent and observent Catherine is shown from a very young age, it makes the viewer confident about the events that will get unfolded later in the history and the show.

I hope and look forward to more such history retellings.

Thoughtful and hilarious
8 December 2023
First things first, the protagonist looks more like Thomas Middleditch than he himself 😂

That said, this show is epic in more than one ways, it's obviously good comedy, but the characterization and setting is even more relevant in 2023 than 2016 when it was first aired.

The characters feel so real and dedicated to the arc, well written and impressive in all ways.

There is an inherent sadness in all episodes, and because you are also laughing in between, it hits you all the more. The story telling is modern and genius, it's easy to relate with emotions, loneliness, situations and awkwardness, I look forward to watch the remaining 9 episodes.

It's actually an interesting foray into the story
5 December 2023
I see existing reviews and feel glad that I didn't see them before watching the film, it's my first Turkish feature film, only some shows I've seen earlier but overall among the first experience of Turkish cultural output.

I see that a novel is already there, and more than one existing adaptation, so I guess that the target audience was not really Turkish here, despite the language being um.. Turkish.

But it's something on the lines of, they know the story is good, and it could attract people around the world on OTT. And it succeeded in doing just that for me.

I started it thinking just another period drama, but the characters were obviously polished and the decisions made sense to me at every step, it might have been executed better at other places, but I just wanted the film to look good and be of my interest.

The protagonist is very human and smart, she takes decisions that could put her in an asylum but she chose herself over the others. Some changes from the source material that I know but won't share because it would spoil things, but I again felt those decisions in line with the character I was watching.

Overall an interesting time I've had, I was quite stressed during the day due to work and an exam I'm preparing for, a welcome change into human psyche, all male and female characters showed so much that goes on in real life, the decisions might be different but the thoughts are humane all through.

Iyi geceler.

An unsure women ends up destroying many things
20 November 2023
A film that makes you think, it's too real in some aspects.

When you are jumping the gun on your marriage, life gets too confusing, every decision seems monumental, life changing and the perspective shifts immediately. This is more true if the woman has the entire day to think about these changes, at some point things start making you nervous.

And in that moment, at your weakest, you are most prone to make mistakes. These mistakes help you find yourself, but at the same time, it also makes you compete with your own bright side and your own dark side.

Ultimately, it's multiple lives that can change forever from just one decision, and it's difficult.

I keep forgetting how good a movie can make you feel
5 November 2023
Such a soul searching film, it reminded me so much of my own past, and made me ponder about the future as well.

Ofcourse, I'm not a teenager, nor am I a struggling Hollywood star in his 40s.

But I'm a 25 year old human, and the film is about human life, the mistakes we make, the things we overthink, and the things we take for granted.

A journey like none other, a complete life lived, and the inclination towards your own childhood which one always remembers.

The cry by Ruth at the end shows how all of this can muster together and make a life worth living. All the passions, all the moments.

Shake your head girl with uour ponytail Takes me right back.

Transports you to realm of historical fantasy
27 May 2023
Took them 23 years to make, and among the biggest french production ever, heavily fictionalized but still I think the film does justice to art, architecture and engineering, and can be thoroughly enjoyed.

Emma Mackey as a muse and focal point of the inspiration of Gustave was able to captivate and make believe the audience that it's all real even when it was not.

Among the few french films I ever saw, ans I am glad I did.

Some stories are more suited for a film than others, and I think that it's a smart choice to authentically portray the time the film was set in, and humanize the legend so that everyone can relate to the passion and skills he had and he displayed.

Innocence and Overthinking
26 May 2023
A beautiful piece of art, supremely relevant to the ongoing times.

The film is slow paced, nothing much happens, and quite straightforward.

It gives you time to absorb into characters, and highlights the natural weakness and strengths, and in adding that none of the character is having ulterior motives, and still things just can't work out.

Beautifully created, entices the viewer through the duration and a perfect film to end your day with.

It's a breath of fresh air amid the more complex and woke narratives forming the spearhead of Hollywood and style residing itself over substance in much of the latest movies, films like this need to be appreciated.

18 years after it was made, but so timeless and so epic
30 April 2023
My respect for everyone involved in this masterpiece have shot up immensely, and I have tears in my eyes as I review this.

Vidhya Balan is purely magical in this very first film of her career, and it shows why she has become so successful in this industry right now, and characters b Saif, Sanjay and everyone were so well acted and written, that it's magical.

The film shows the mentality, period and motivations so well, I think this along with Devdas can be termed as two supremely beautiful films, so similar in their theme and both cult masterpieces of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay.

The music and background score is smartly composed. I loved the whole experience, and will suggest you to watch to understand and appreciate Bengali and Indian culture to the depths and with its beauty along with its flaws.

Cult Indian film representing society from a different lens
11 August 2022
India gave Mahatma Gandhi to the world, that means an ideology of extreme respect towards fellow human beings and their intentions and motives, be it at the cost of extreme self harm, but the results always justify the method.

This is another example, and the success this film had back in late 1950s is testament to his theory and is a window in times that seem so different yet so engaging and engrossing.

It's a cinematic piece of art and is beautiful in every way, the music is legendary and the story engages you to the very limited character set and their mindset amazingly well.

Rajshri as a film house deserve Bharat Ratna
11 August 2022
Ek Vivah aisa bhi is much better female centric film than the so-called female led and feminism driven movies where the protagonist is a know-all and by default better than anyone else around her because she is a female.

And this is when it does not try to be that at all.

Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi is a well made film and is spiritual successor to Vivah released two years prior to this.

Many fans of Vivah were unhappy that the female protagonist there was just too naive and its a patriarchy culture film, and they should be very happy to see this one, but I guess the same people will make fun of this one by seeing that it's a marriage footage and nothing else.

Well, of course. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I cried a few times and the writing of this film is crazy good. A perfect film for Indian families and representing the family culture that we have developed here over millennia.

A must watch, and I will re-watch it a few more times gradually. It's not a perfect film though, some things could have been better but I am emotionally rich after seeing and hence giving it a 10 out of 10, also I feel that it has a low rating compared to what it deserved, so yeah.

How brave is this guy?
24 December 2021
Anand L Rai, I've always been a fan, but this time he blows me away with his sheer mental strength, and understand the reason, why he is so highly rated among the stalwarts of creativity.

After Zero, a movie with ambition so huge, that even the biggest star of the nation couldn't deliver, and gets bombarded with so much hate and financial losses (in short term), I would have expected him to take a safe, less ambitious project, and d justice, in the manner that has now become his signature with Raanjhana and others.

But, instead of this, he goes on to take the same team, and make another super ambitious project, this time a musicale with AR Rehman at the helm, and goes out to make this gem of a movie, that stays true to his style of filmmaking, just on a scale never seen before.

Atrangi Retries to create a world and take you in it to enjoy and appreciate the depth, and music, as expected keeps you on the ride throughout.

The perspectives of the characters are strong, and carried out with authenticity for the most part, except maybe Akshay Kumar in his brief stay.

Dhanush was in another league though.

Had another watch for the masterpiece, the very next day of the release and the first watch.

It really is insanely beautiful, cried both the times, and to appreciate what AR Rehman and AL Rai have created together, with Dhanush hitting it out of the park with his impeccable performance.

Story of a nation
29 August 2021
One of the best movies coming from India on war drama.

So many stories that were told and so many that went untold, a war torn nation and it's clear that Kabir Khan had a vision to share on everything.

It's always great to sync with the way the story was meant to be told.

Disturbing, but insightful in a sad way
11 June 2021
Just as a movie, it was maybe 6/10. But then, it's not just a movie, it's just a tad bit more than that.

Anyone making this without it being based on true events, would be a pathetic pervert, but to know that so many girls actually did faced it, it's just essential for everyone to see this.

I found it disturbing, stupid at times, but in the end, it's a documentary on human nature. We are pathetic in so many ways, and it's important to know this.

There are some movies that we deserve, and some we do not.
30 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
From day one, this movie is not rated highly, and that has kept me from giving it a try, well, up until now. I saw it today, and got hooked from the first minute.

I got in expecting some cheesy songs, and an over the top movie, that tries to do something that it's not capable of, and hence failing to do even what it can, and does this prove me wrong.

This is a romantic movie, all through the way, and with a perspective that movies generally have not ventured into in India. There are some modern movies that deal with reality, like chalte-chalte and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, and I loved them, but no surprise that even they were not accepted by Indian Audience wholeheartedly.

This is another victim, a bit quirky at times, but much simpler than what you expect from a commercial bollywood movie, with the emotional aspects in the forefront, and other things playing the supportive role. The lead characters look amazing, and suit the characters most of the times, except the laziness that they have shown while maintaining the timelines, but even that works for me given that the whole thing is a dream, and their point is generally not to be time accurate, nor they are required to make sense.

I loved the movie, I will surely watch again sometime, and look forward to have some lengthy and thoughtful discussions around the concept and management of this film.

Also, I genuinely think that acting and script capabilities of both the leads are severely underrated, I have more often than not, enjoyed their movies over other contemporaries.

Soothing, beautiful, legendary since Irrfan left us all
7 May 2021
It's one of the movies that I was keeping for a moment. The world around us is so relatable, through the prism of this movie. It beautifully captures the current state of our country, where modernity and traditions are trying to coexist. Choosing to make one win is always easy, but balancing everything out is the step that injects sense in the world we live in.

And this can't happen with a single person, you need a karwaan for that. It's a poem.

Bandish Bandits (2020– )
10/10
This is a genre defining show, it's unlike anything else you have ever seen. Fresh in legitimate way.
6 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When you watch a series, or a movie from any genre, it's a given that you will be able to draw parallels from earlier work and things will look stale at some point in time, but not with Bandish Bandits.

As a Rathore myself, an avid listener of Indian classical and Indian pop, bollywood and fusion genre, my expectations from this show were quite high, and I didn't expected it to meet them, but OTT platforms have brought in a safe cushion for creativity like this, without the fear of absolute failure, and it shows what art can do, once the monetary aspect is taken further from the pivotal point.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy don't have too many misses, but this has got to be their best performance in a long time, as the opportunities are afar and few in mainstream pop. The creators of the show have encapsulated every aspect of the show beautifully, be it the ever lasting pride of Pandit ji, or the carefree artist in the form of Tammana, or the young hero, who is ready to sacrifice everything for his passion and love. All the characters have very strong foundations, and I think that Bandish Bandits can in the long run become the poster child for the next gen Classical, much like the internal growth we see in the show itself.

I enjoyed every bit of this amazing show, and will suggest you if you are into music.

Bound to get better in later seasons
17 July 2020
This is the show that you need to watch after breaking bad. I mean, it's so easy to draw the parallels, the setting is impeccable and it gets real fun real fast.

I see how people are rating this a bit low than it deserves due to excessive teenage content but that builds up the thing for me and hence is much better than other shows that make use of that trick.

Real excited for the next season, just 4 days now.

It was good to seal things off
3 July 2020
It was not something new, but felt nice about Jesse completing his arc. It's bittersweet ending for him and it's life. I felt nice that everything was touched upon, without one thing just taking over the whole film.

Jesse went through a lot and I felt it when he said that he was sorry for not going the first time, it's amazing that how that one event could turn the whole thing remarkably. I'll still be interested in knowing what he did after going to Alaska, not in a movie, but preferably in some reading format.

Breaking Bad: Felina (2013)
Season 5, Episode 16
10/10
Insane, soothing, heart-wrenching, and yet satisfying like ice on a burnt wound
2 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This the final episode of Breaking bad, which means that there has been no better episode that aired on Television ever after this one. And it's worth the accolades. It's the best finale I've ever seen for any series.

I will always love the creators of this show for one simple thing, they completed the story when it was at it's peak. You never want a bell shaped curve for your TV Show, it has to be like this.

Walt, who started by assuring that he will be dead by the end, no matter what actually dies. And it's such a good feeling to compare the two Walts and realize that one is much more happier than the other, in the end he doesn't really care about anyone more than his own satisfaction and greed.

The show is epic, I believed very sincerely that there can not be a greater story than the Mahabharata, which I believe even now, but this one is surely a candidate.

These characters will go a long road inside my head for whole of my life, it was that good. And the last conversation between Jessie and Walt brought tears down my eyes. It's not a question that you'll be reading this review before watching this epic, as you just have to watch it if you've come this far.

I'll now go for El camino, and just hope that it continues this masterpiece with utmost respect and faith. I loved this show, and will come back later for a revisit.

Indian parallel cinema is amazing
2 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
To see this movie was like seeing through a poem, with every character and scene made with excessive depth, and all are very well executed.

The biggest surprise for me was Sanya Malhotra, who performed a very deep and mature role despite me having some doubts initially, it's out there to see that so much talent is present in India, but it will always remain underutilized.

The movie itself captures several emotions with a stark focus on reality, where we see a burdened Nawajuddin Siddiqui living in a slum sort of place, to make both ends meet for his grandmother and to payoff the debt he got from his family. The way he has enacted all this, while realizing that his happiness is secondary throughout the movie just shows how deep he gets into a character.

And then we have Sanya, an overburdened child, whose parents love her but in their own way. She sort of represents every Indian kid out there, with her utter sad arc of a girl whose mother asked her teacher to stop awarding her for her good acting, because that can ruin her academic performance. The way she interacted with the second world in the movie was brilliant to observe, and her arc is so soothing for someone who discovered the world through her own experiences rather than seeing the imposed picture.

In all, the only issue that I really had was the impracticality of the whole thing, which does make even this movie a bit dumb at times, but it sure is a great mirror for someone looking for real Indian cinema, which shows it's largest city through the prism of the rest of the nation. I felt quite happy to see this, and could draw several parallels with Parasite, which is very different in so many ways, but does contain the contrast of two worlds living in the same city with beautiful depiction.

Too stupid to be be true, or good
30 June 2020
So, there are shows which has everything going for them but are still somehow unable to deliver what they could have.

This show has strong source material, a nice platform and several earlier shows like Stranger Things and Dark with similar themes, but this still manages to almost ruin everything with its weird teen sub arcs and characters making really really dumb decisions when they just should not.

The only saving grace was Kinsey, as she at least had a plausible reason to act up all weird. I have only seen the first six episodes till now, and have not been able to want for more, but I will complete it anyway due to time already invested, and the Netflix habit of putting everything in the last episodes.

The thing that I liked were the clarity of supernatural items, which is expected due to extensive material been written about them and it's very hard to screw up, and I imagine that this could very well be a very strong point for the show in the later seasons, so things can turn up to be a lot better if only they try to be a bit more mature with their characters.

It's not much of anything, except for good looks
28 June 2020
So, apparently this is about a (very) rich and handsome guy abducting a girl and the girl falling for him eventually. Also, it's made on a book trilogy, so that's unique.

What I must give to the movie is that it looks insanely good, with a really good looking girl giving in to Stockholm syndrome and falling for a good looking guy, and the movie bodes well to just spend 2 hours without going too much into the depths.

But the story is just not there, it's repetitive and with no consequences. I do believe that more movies are to follow to complete the story or whatever of it is there, the movie is being watched a lot and hence the case only grows stronger.

It's beautiful, time flows for most of the time, but stalls sometimes in the second half.
21 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
An underrated piece of art, it took me 4 years to take some time for this masterpiece, it's specifically better given the times it was made in. Bollywood hasn't really produced a love story of this much substance since the good old Yash Chopra times.

The camerawork, the music makes you flow into time, and every frame is like a new canvas filled with splattered colours. Amit Trivedi has really set the bar really high with this album, you can't really get enough of such level of craftsmanship. Katrina, Aditya, Tunisha, Tabu were all living the characters and everything felt quite natural, but despite all this, the film manages to cringe and even bore you for some time in the second half.

Personalities are dug too much for their own good, specifically the whole Ajay Devgan part was quite needless and surely was a negative when you consider the realistic nature of the rest of the story, I think he was there just for the surprise element. This is one place where Indian movies really falter, substance just takes a back seat ahead of stardom even in artistic films like this. Regardless, it was lovely.
