Dexter (2006)
Love the show, hate Deb
Brilliantly written, Michael C Hall nails the character. But Jennifer Carpenter's 'Deb' is irritating in the extreme. Her harsh, abrasive, 'out to prove a point' nature and horribly distracting profanity is the worst part of the show. Add to that, the frequent and hysterical wailing, its resulted in me having to take a break from covid binge watching this after 4 seasons.
Patriot: Escape From Paris (2018)
Season 3 please!
I'm not going to give too much away, but the brilliant irony and black humor of season 1 carry over to 2. However, the characters become more complex and story telling more layered and dark. Some will walk away unfulfilled and in demand of another season. But this isn't a rounded out feel good show. It's the lengths a individual, who has slowly been dehumanised, will go to get from 'a' to 'b'. In the end, we really don't know what the 'b' is. All the actors are on point, but Michael Dorman and Kurtwood Smith are magnificent, and together provide the greatest moments of humor and honesty. A series worthy of your commitment.
The Irishman (2019)
I celebrated 3 birthdays watching this!
Long, long and long! This is easily the longest movie I've ever sat through. It's a slow burn that never really catches fire. There's a dreadful amount of padding. I mean, we had to devote the final 20 minutes to watching the main characters grow old and die. I concur with other reviewers that it's a story that could easily be told in 90 minutes. But as we know, that isn't Scorsese's style. Don't get me wrong, I like many others have been big fans of his story telling. But it's gotten to the point where he can polish a stone and it will come out a critically acclaimed diamond. Joe Pesci and Ray Romano are the stand out performers. At the end of it, my wife regretfully said she could have watched an entire season of Jane the Virgin. I think she's got a point.
