Let Me In (2010)
Lost it's touch
Maybe you know already, it's the remake of "Let the right one in" which surprisingly is only a few years older.
I watched that too, it was an interesting & very dark story about the (complicated, of course) relationship between a young vampire girl and a loner boy.
I really don't want to join the discussion pro/contra remakes, but the original from Sweden worked for me because of it's cold touch. Dark, hopeless, depressing, violent and the characters fit that criteria. A movie with depressing content can be interesting and fun to watch as well, if you know what i mean.
*If* they stick with it. And here is where the remake fails. The characters are adapted to main stream audience. The vampire girl looks too normal and accessible. Yes she still turns into a beast when the time comes, but it's not the same. She didn't give me that strange feeling. Similar goes for most characters. The boy just seems lost, while in the original i kept thinking "Yea that's a serial killer in the making".
The story thou, it's almost identical. If you already watched the first movie, then it's a complete waste of time. The few different parts, i had the feeling they were left out because they didn't want to confuse.
4/10 because they didn't make it too cheesy (you can look forward to some bloody murders and vampire stuff), but in the end it's only a cash crab and people should watch the original if they have to choose.
Kalevet (2010)
Now i am angry
Because i expected this to be crap, but got "convinced" otherwise by positive reviews (not only on IMDb).
People must have gone silly, i don't even know where to start explaining how bad this movie is. The dialogues are so fake and silly, i felt how my brain begs for mercy. It's impossible to care about any of these guys & gals. The acting so wooden, you never can get rid of the feeling it's just a stupid movie. Never, i almost expected to see cameras and someone asking for a break.
The story, if you can call it that - a complete mess. This movie does not take itself serious, and normally this helps a bit to tolerate bullshit but not here... the jokes are not funny, they come in the wrong moments and it just adds more nonsense.
Needless to say it's also not scary at all. All this nonsense about it being something new because the killer is just a sidekick...forget it. Doesn't matter who kills who and what happens, it's all random anyway because they obviously had no idea what to do with their own stupid film.
I also don't care about it being the first horror movie from Israel. Yea it's horror, but only for your brain cells. 1 star cause i cannot go any lower, 0 stars for everyone who gives this a positive review. Unbelievable...
The Strangers (2008)
Average
..so let's split the good and bad:
+ Has it's scary moments and good overall Atmo. You just have to focus and put your reservations aside, otherwise watching this will be a waste of time.
+ Acting was decent, and the characters somewhat likable. I wouldn't go as far as saying i rooted for those 2, but i also didn't want them to die asap..
+ No stupid turn of events. You get what is promised early in the film, nothing more or less. I dislike when movies turn random.
+ It's a well crafted film. This is not a cheap production.
And the bad:
- The intro. A wedding reception that didn't work out is used to make us believe these 2 good looking people hit rock bottom. That's boring to the "normal" viewer, and screams spoiled Hollywood kids. Oh and it's also too long.
- They do stupid things. You know..like splitting up, leaving their excellent cover positions. Nonsense like "stay in the house" when they know they are already inside. Outstanding horror movies work around those clichés and find other ways to create suspense and move the story on.
- It becomes too obvious that the intruders play games with their victims. You know they will not be killed "now", and this removes suspense.
- The ending didn't satisfy me. I also never believed it's based on a true story. Like most other films claiming that, The Strangers is inspired by certain events. Which is nothing that should even be mentioned, it's a cruel world and almost everything "really" happened.
So that's it, a watchable horror movie. No masterpiece, but a good time killer.
American Horror Story (2011)
Boring and stupid
I tried this after "The Walking Dead", which was another fail. I want all horror series to work for me, it's my favorite genre besides fantasy, but...
The biggest flaw: it's just not scary. Not for "real" horror fans, people have different taste but i just dare saying this stuff is more for kids than anything else. In a real horror experience you sometimes forget you are looking at a screen, that doesn't happen at all here. It's too fake, it's not presented in a believable way and you just shake your head too often.
Part of that feeling comes from all the plot holes, ghosts in this show are not acting like ghosts. When they are killed (and return), they act like humans (i guess it's so we can get all the pointless drama too..). They ally with their killers, instead of urging for revenge. They care about soap opera feelings. There are no boundaries here, it's only scary if it follows some rules, right? Random crap always reminds you it's just a silly show.
So yea the story, it's a complete mess. The introduction of the main chars, the house and other basics - fine. You are lured into believing this could be something. But soon enough it's all over the place, you lose track of what you should remember and i stopped thinking after a while (and started wondering why am i watching this).
The characters are annoying. They are either over the board "kiss my ass - life sucks" style. Or dominant women (who are crying inside of course, we neeed the drama from them as well). Or soft cakes. Or just freaks, but not the likable kind. And the actors are all washed up, really i liked nobody here.
And i also thought the production (camera work etc.) sucked. Those easily impressed call it "it's not taking itself serious". I call it cheap material. Avoid.
The Walking Dead (2010)
Oh FFS not again...
Most of us know the feeling by now.. you look for something to watch, see a high rating and an interesting topic (Horror, Zombies) and think "okay what the heck".
We wasted our time so you maybe don't have to. This sucks.
What we have here is boring drama among (at best average) actors, a soap opera with a zombie apocalypse scenario to lure you in.
Desperate mothers, relationship problems, asshole-type tough guys, suppressed black people and women, questionable leaders and endless blah blah blah.
How does that fit into a zombie series, you ask? It doesn't. It's as if these people sometimes forget where they are, what is going on around them and that they are the few living people left on earth (who should stick together..).
So how's the action.. it's unrealistic, mostly. Plenty plot holes (things are there in 1 scene, and 5 seconds later they are gone or the other way round). There's some gore, but in these "torture porn" days much of it feels..wrong. Not needed, as if they want to apologize for the boredom that lulls you in most of the time.
The story? Virus nearly wipes out humanity by turning everyone into zombies (standard stuff really). Some random people survive and do all the silly things we discussed above. Really there's not much else, of course they hope to find a cure, other survivors or maybe the army..we have seen all this before.
Oh before i finish this depressing review, the sneaky part is.. in the very beginning there's actually an interesting character (a black man and his son, introducing our main char to the madness). Figures that he soon enough disappears. Don't fall for it, and hey don't believe the hype or rating. Chances are sky high you will dismiss this crap after a while.
