The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015)
Unique
Insecurity is common among teenagers so is being horny
Minnie is young and mother advices to be a bit wilder and she does but falls in love with Monroe, her mother's boyfriend. It gives her a chance to be sexually active with Monroe and other men her age, the only one who knows this secret is Kimmie, her bestfriend. The situation becomes harder to cooperate as Minnie seems to be a Nymphomaniac and desires for sex but her real ambition is to be an Artist like her idol is a cartoonist. It dives deeper when Minnie is facing the problem of their relationship with Monroe and battle with drugs, sex and even prostitution.
I didn't expect so the sexual theme and I thought this was another teen movie. It's pretty unique and the production design was spot on. Powley was great as this cute trainwreck character. The filter or colour tone matched the setting. I was expecting more development from other characters but the playful Minnie is to be seen centered.
Creed (2015)
With the spirit of Rocky
Rocky is a legend Adonis is a legend in the making
Being a financially successful person with a great job is something nice but Adonis wants to be a boxer so he goes from Los Angeles to Philadelphia. He gets mistreated all because of his last name being one of the biggest boxers. Nobody wants to train him until he finally convinces Rocky to do the job. He also forms a romantic relationship with Bianca, his neighbor. After the first win he is challenged by the champ for a one on one match. Rocky only accepts to continue training with Adonis while fighting cancer because it reminds him of what his past is and Adonis' future can be.
The cast really works well and especially Jordan as Adonis but the true performer is Stallone with his ability to perform well in a supporting character. The editing is solid with modern and new music adding to what time the movie takes place. Hey, I may prefer the first Rocky film but Creed is a great conclusion and hopefully nothing else follows.
The Peanuts Movie (2015)
A sweet tribute
It's 65 years after the first Peanuts Comic Strip and and 55 years after the landmark TV special, A Charlie Brown Christmas.
Reinventing yourself is something very hard to do but this movie pulled it off with staying true to it's roots.
Good Old Charlie Brown gets tired of always failing so when the new kid on the block moves in, he just wants to change himself for the better. The new kid turns out to be a cute girl that Charlie really fancies so he does everything to try to impress her while improving himself from his flaws.
It's really charming to see what the movie is. A tribute to Charles Shulz and it's very evident that it has a lot of heart from the whole crew. Charlie Brown is such a character that is easily relatable and the other characters are so lovable and hilarious to watch. It gives a great lesson for everyone and that's to be who you are and not you're not.
Enemy (2013)
Deeper Meaning
The real plot of the movie takes place inside the head of our main character. It's not visible and you have to take time to come up with your conclusion.
Adam is an accomplished teacher with no problems and what many would say the perfect life but he doesn't have other things going aside from passing time.
Anthony is a 3rd-rate actor who is only a bit player in the movies. With a pregnant wife of 6 months, he has a busy and arrogant tone.
Adam and Anthony is the same person but represent the different sides of the individual. The spider represents the fear of commitment so that explains many of the haunting images that makes no sense.
The reality is Anthony or Adam abandoned his wife of 6 months but recently came back to stay. He is processing how serious commitment is and fights with the sides of what's better: Being Adam or Being Anthony
It's a film with metaphors and symbolism, many of the scenes aren't real and that's okay because it means the mind is only making the vivid representations. It tackles development of what is desired. The direction, acting, music and cinematography works amazingly.
P.S. I feel bad for laughing at many of the scenes
Heneral Luna (2015)
Smart Film
Set in the war between Americans and Filipinos. The Americans are invading the Philippines until the Filipinos give up, this includes killing the lives of the innocent. The Philippine Government are conducting a plan while many want to negotiate for better profit. General Luna is there to stop the greed and focus and prioritize the state of the nation.
General Antonio Luna is infamous, mad, unafraid, furious and above all cares for his family, fellow-soldiers and country men. He will stop at nothing until he accomplish his mission of giving freedom to his country. He disciplines and trains the soldiers into making them independent and not some slackers or cowards within the war. He removes all the corrupted he can find. Inspiration is key and that's what he wants to show to all his soldiers.
In the end, the face of the real enemy is revealed. It's one of his own. Savagely killed by his own country-men. Showing No Mercy to a man who only wants what's better for the whole country.
I love the exposure shown to what the message was. It had many symbolisms and morals one might enjoy learning. John Arcilla really turns into the character he's portraying, he even looks like him. The effects use was really brutal, the sound was pretty great to and the cinematography had very beautiful shots and lightning in some scenes. The comedy present was a nice addition to the film and making it more entertaining to watch. The direction by Jerrold Tarog shines on how careful the actors give their performances. The script is rich with very detailed and fun lines of entertainment.
I will say that this film is not propaganda, it's not bragging of which country is better, it's does not promote blind nationalism. It's more on what's present and understandable with the value of claiming responsibility. It does not send you the message of "This film makes me shameful and filling me guilt you into liking it.". It's better if you understand your reflections.
Despicable Me (2010)
For everybody
Agnes: Oh, my gosh look at the fluffy unicorn
Agnes: He's so fluffy, I'm gonna die!
Despicable me is famous for one thing. It's Minions. I recall watching this in 2010 and I think I watched this movie around 12 times already so I think I got used to all the jokes around it so I can only giggle to it rather than laughing out so hard.
Despicable Me is about a villain wanting to scheme the most evil plan known to man. That is stealing the moon but the lack of budget and the bank declining on him makes it hard to do. So he steals a shrink ray as part of the plan but gets stolen by a younger villain in the name of vector. He tries to steal it back but fails and decides to adopt 3 cute orphans to pretend to sell cookies and help him steal it back. He succeeds but the only thing left is what to with the orphans. He is now stuck with them but some how the orphans are changing him to be a nicer person.
The movie is really funny and enjoyable for the children, teens and adults alike. Watch it.
