Lisa Frankenstein (2024)
I just love Diablo Cody
So, I watched this for two reasons, I'm a huge fan of Diablo Cody and I love horror movies. Set around a high school in 1989, it's vibrant, fast paced and utterly silly.
There is so much crammed into a tight space, I think I'll have to watch it again. Carla Guigino, seems to be having the time of her life playing the wicked stepmother, and the teens are actually likeable rather than annoying. Cole Sprause is mute for most of the movie, leaving Kathryn Newton to steal the show in every scene as Madonna, if imagined by Tim Burton. This is my first encounter with Zelda Williams as director and I think she did an upstanding job. This isn't highbrow, nor will it win many Oscars, but I loved it and it's a satisfying slice of horror comedy with 80s nostalgia to boot. Give it a go!
The Burned Over District (2022)
Packs a punch
This starts with a terrible accident where a woman dies. In the aftermath, her widowed husband tries to make sense of what has happened whilst his family rally around him. I could not have guessed where this was going and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of this movie. It has some truly scary moments and bags of atmosphere. The acting feels natural and whilst this isn't a mega budget production, it shows real promise for all the key players. I will certainly be looking out for other movies from this team. It's dark and brooding but not in a contrived way. Some scenes are difficult to watch but not lingering. I'd definitely recommend this, give it a go!
Speak No Evil (2022)
Tense and unpleasant
The title is misleading as it suggests some sort of supernatural thriller. I almost skipped right past it.
This film is like a nightmare. It starts off innocently enough but with a sense of unease that you can't quite place.
How far will good manners take you? What would you be willing to tolerate in the name of being polite? A family is tested to their limits when they visit fast friends made on vacation in Italy.
It's a slow burn with great performances from the adult and child actors.
The ending is not predictable and it leaves you feeling uneasy. Definitely not one for the faint hearted.
The Scary of Sixty-First (2021)
Bizarre juvenile nonsense
I love a rubbish horror film. I did not enjoy this at all. This has no actual story and feels like it was filmed in the 1960s by a 12 year old sadist. I literally have nothing positive to say. The characters bumble around masturbating and obsessing about Jeffrey Epstein and Prince Andrew. There isn't a huge amount of dialogue and what there is seems hollow and contrived. I sort of understand where they were going with the aesthetic of the film but it needed some explanation. I suspect they were aiming for arthouse but sadly landed in sh*those. I don't often leave a review for anything really but this was so poor I felt compelled to warn others.
