Utopia: Just a Fanboy (2020)
What a waste of potential
First episode good, most of second episode good. Then that ending, with that stupid flawed logic. This screams forced shock value. Now you got the most hated protagonist leading the show. No thank you. What a waste of potential.
Away (2020)
Emotional mess
I gave this show a fair try but i can't enjoy it no matter how hard I try. There is too much exaggerated drama. All of the characters are damaged in one way or another, and I honestly don't see how they got through psych evaluation, I don't believe the world couldn't find more stable people with less baggage that they don't need to vent or recall every 5 min.
The main character constantly needs emotional validation, if that is the right way to describe it. I know she's supposed to be a strong character but it seems like she needs emotional support in every part of the journey to push through, making her seem kinda weak spirited, and no way someone fit for role of commander. The physical image of a strong character mixed with weak actions and character traits listed earlier result in a very confusing and emotionally unstable character.
Before someone takes the easy route and claims "it's because you have issues with the show being a female led one", believe me when I say I don't. Buffy the Vampire slayer, Terminator: The Sarah Conner chronicles, Alien franchise, the hunger games, are some of my favorite series and movies, all lead by strong, but relatable, women.
Buffy would sometimes if not often have emotional moments where she needed support from her friends before kicking ass, but those moments felt real and you could emphasize with the character, it didn't feel forced. Away on the other hand introduces drama at every step of the way in a way that feels extremely forced and resulting in a set of characters which seem very unstable, especially the main character Emma.
Also I saw other people mentioning cellphones and video calls, I mean there is no way that it would work like that, I.e. high quality and real time. Even if the connection is perfect, the signal still needs to travel a very long distance back and forth and even with the speed of light it would still cause a delay between speaker speaking and listener listening. Normally sci-fi shows/movies can play around with the laws of physics and people wouldn't notice, but signal delay over long distance is very common knowledge, and therefore sticks out like a sore thumb that can't help but feel noticed. They should've scrapped that and introduced difficulty to communicate with loved ones as a point of the story, would be more believable, it simply makes no sense that they can make phone/video calls like on earth, but I assume they decided to break this rule for the sake of added drama.
On the plus side, the visuals are great and the actors are good.
3/10 (bad, but not terrible)
The Witcher (2019)
A solid, authentic Witcher experience
I must admit I was a bit worried about the Witcher series before it came out, due to the whole woke feeling of the trailers, news and the custome designes.
I am happy to announce that those concerns can largely be laid to rest. This Witcher series felt authentic. It's gritty and plenty of character development. Henry Cavill does an AMAZING job playing as Geralt. I had expectations of Henry, but this exceeded even that. He captures Geralts behaviour and humor to the T. Freya Allan also does a fantastic job as Ciri.
The first episode I would say is the series weakest, but it picks up speed pretty fast, and it finishes season 1 incredibly strong. Honestly I can't wait for Season 2!!!
My only complains are that Yennefer and Triss Merigold felt badly cast. I know its a petty thing to complain about, but sorceresses are described as 10/10 in their appearances, for valid reasons too which I will not go into detail here. Anyway, they are supposed to be some of the most beautiful women in the world of witcher, the ideals which they have been shaped into during their transformation. Actresses potraying Yennefer and Triss respectively, are not bad actors and I have outmost respect for them, but they do not live up to the appearances of their characters. They look like an average person on the street, and not like a sorceress should look like. It makes it weird why Geralt would be absolutely smitten by Netflix's Yennefer. I hope showrunners dare to do a recast for these two roles but I don't count on it.This does not make or break the show for me, but it is the reason I give it a 9/10 rather than 10/10, since they are main characters and take up a lot of screen time.
