Lumpia with a Vengeance (2020)
Hilarious B-Movie Filipino Goodness
"Are we Asian or Pacific Islander?"
A fun and hilarious B-movie comedy. With Filipino & Mexican inside jokes that are spot on.
The inside jokes are the best aspect about the whole movie, which also works against it. Anyone without any knowledge of the culture is left out on the humor. As the inside jokes are deep, especially the 90s Filipino American references.
That said, lots of quotable jokes and laughter can be had. If B-Movie comedies are your jam, check it out!
If you're not a fan of B-Movies, take away a star. If you're unfamiliar with Filipino American culture, take away another 1-2 stars.
Inu-oh (2021)
Brilliant Animation, Lackluster Narrative
Absolutely amazing animation. Unfortunately, the story lacks cohesion across the entire film, along with any strong points to the events portrayed. The music scenes were a great highlight alongside the visually brilliant set pieces. But Inu-Oh's singing was laughably bad (particularly his vibrato). The ending also leaves a lot to desire as well.
I'd recommend this to anyone into unique presentations and doesn't mind a story without a clear point to the overall narrative. Fans of animation will find something to enjoy here. Especially with Inu-Oh's masterful work, artistry, and technical precision. It's definitely cool to observe on a big screen.
The Last Duel (2021)
Great Production with Difficult Subject Matter & a Disappointing Message
I usually avoid reading a synopsis before watching a film. But in this case I regret not doing so. As the the story is centered around the truth regarding the events involving a woman being taken against her will. With the story being told from her perspective, her husband's, and also her defilers. Ultimately leaving you with nothing worthwhile to walk away with.
The film covers many themes through the character and story plots, such as: ambiguity, honor, honesty, integrity, faithfulness, and duty. When it comes to the overall narrative, the film at first seems to say that no matter what in life you must stand against those who have done you wrong in a firm and truthful manner. Then pivots to notions that perhaps it (at times) may be best to remain quiet for the sake of a greater purpose worth serving (such as survival or duty to your family).
Bear in mind, I found the film well executed and believable. So much so that when I had to see a character I cared for put thru such tribulations it deeply disturbed me. So the film was successful in moving my emotions in a visceral way. But by leaving certain events ambiguous and lacking a worthwhile point to it all, you're only left with the idea that people can be cruel and reality traumatizing.
Guimoon (2021)
Wanted to Love Guimoon, ScreenX Version is Fun
Despite the compelling ideas at play, the film falters onto a repetitive set of circumstances that play out over. Then provides a lackluster outcome from the events that happen to the characters.
On the "guimoon" once per year the moon is blocked from view by a thick layer of clouds. But in the mountains, there's an urban legend where you can see the moon by using a camera while viewing it from the roof of a specific building. Many fear the building as the inhabitants were slaughtered inside and there are rumors that none can escape after entry.
What then begins as a tale of demonic possession and an attempt to cleanse it soon develops into a story of a man with odd supernatural gifts entering it later on to "release" the trapped souls. While the public believes a killer slaughtered it's inhabitants, the truth is more sinister. But I don't want to spoil that here.
Unfortunately, the story attempts to add in 3 young friends, takes a very strange path on why the demonic presence exists, and you have a mixed bag of a story. Aside from the story, I'm not really sure what the story was setting out to achieve. As ultimately, you don't really gain anything from the experience.
In the end, it feels like a weak M. Night Shamylan film that gets lost in the twists instead of focusing more on what it started. Then providing a clear idea of what the film was trying to say (at least beyond it's circumstances). Seeing it in ScreenX was visually stunning. Enhancing the onscreen events. But that wasn't enough to lift it beyond a 6 out of 10. I'd drop this to a 5 if viewed in standard 2D.
Harley Quinn (2019)
So Close to Greatness
Great comedy can be found in Harley Quinn. With writing that has some great subversion and irreverence, similar to the satirical writing similar of Drawn Together & Venture Bros. Between Frank the talking plant, Commissioner Gordon's craziness, and Bane's parody from Nolan's Dark Knight series, this show will definitely put a smile on your face. As it's layered with great comedy.
Unfortunately, the lulls come when the plot becomes excessively random, incohesive, or delves too deep into character driven plot lines. With some episodes having much stronger stories than others. For example, the first two episodes focusing on the abusive relationship between Joker & Harley ending is both entertaining and relatable. But as the show goes on, this aspect of the plot lingers and the show becomes the same familiar recipe found between the Joker & Batman. As the show fails to deliver a unique and rewatchable experience (at least from a story perspective). Which is a bummer.
For the most part, the show feels like a series of hilarious scenes, interrupted by the stereotypical roommate television shows. Coming off like a mix between Big Bang Theory meets Venture Bros, with the irreverence of Drawn Together. When the show hits on all cylinders, it's an absolute joy to watch. It's just difficult to watch again, when you know you're about to see the story go from a 8 to 5 in the same episodes you've seen before.
That said, the show is still pretty funny. If you're just trying to find a new show to watch that has great comedy, despite the lacking story, I'd definitely recommend it. It's the type of stuff you'd enjoy watching on Adult Swim with close friends. Wish I could give it a 6.5, as it's not that bad. It's just not enough to earn a 7.
