Maybe I Do (2023)
Sadly depressing
Well, as someone else said in their review, the credits at the beginning went on and on, very unusual for them to be at the onset. I watched this on Amazon prime and wondered if I had somehow scrolled through to the end, I hadn't, so I wound on for ages until the actual start. It began real slow, dragged a bit, livened up a bit when everyone met up then dragged on until the end. I watch every film and show with subtitles on, bit hard of hearing and it makes things easier to understand. The amount of times the words 'crickets chirping' appeared was beyond a joke - I really don't think those sound effects enhanced the film in any shape or form. Good stars in a bad movie, shame really. Was hoping to while away a rainy afternoon comfy and cosy with my dog on the sofa, but after this film I felt as miserable as the rainy Sunday afternoon.
Penance (2020)
Good cast, but......
For some reason I thought it was a film so was surprised at the end of part 1. My fault, nothing to do with the series. I binge watched all 3 episodes together in the end because I needed to see how it would all pan out. (My thought at one time was that both Rosie and Maddie would end up pregnant, but thankfully it didn't go down that route). The story started off well with lots of twists and turns. By the last episode I was shouting at the screen 'you stupid woman, just call the Police', especially when Rosie had found out about Jed's aliases. Jed abused Rosie and Maddie's vulnerability, that bit was believable, but the scene in the woods was madness, she put her life and that of her estranged husband at serious risk. It wasn't explained either how one minute Jed was in the house with Maddie shouting at her, throwing her in a chair and generally being evil but we then see her back at the hospital with Grandma Fay, so how did she escape him? Good acting but daft ending, I thought.
Marriage (2022)
I like the actors but this was rubbish
I had seen the preview and then forgot all about it so I watched it on demand. I demand a better story line!!!
As if the program was not dire and boring enough the theme music (?) blared up really loud every time, about 3 times louder than the rest of the dialogue itself.... I am not sure why that 'To the left... step aside' tune was even selected, it brought nothing extra to the show itself.
I know the daughter was adopted but there seemed to be no family rapport between her and her parents - it was as if she was merely a lodger.
All in all I am not sure why I sat through the whole 4 episodes, I think I was expecting it to improve.
In episode 4 Jamie seems to be seeing a therapist and crying over his damaged car - not sure what that was about.
The Shack (2017)
I wish I had read the reviews
I watched the first part and thought it was going to be good but then..... he gets the note from Papa. He goes to the shack, goes to the house and sees who you thought was his good neighbour from when he was a beaten kid. Then it goes downhill. I am an atheist and couldn't buy into the occupants of the wooden house in the woods. Luckily I watched it on Netflix and wound through to the end. I only gave it three stars for the scenery. Unless you are deeply religious, don't bother.
Paper Towns (2015)
I liked it, even if I am an oldie
Went to see this with my 18 year old daughter, I had read a synopsis and thought I wouldn't actually mind seeing this film (makes a change from the usual animated ones I get dragged along to see). I suppose I had pre-conceived ideas about how Cara Delavigne would be in this film, but I was pleasantly surprised, she brought the character Margo to life and I have to say, I thought she acted the role really well, at times I wished I had had a friend like her in my teenage years and at other times I wanted to slap her (I hadn't read the book so I don't know whether the film had been altered much). It was a film about teenage angst, school prom included, the ending surprised me, however I left the cinema feeling that I had seen a good film and that this was one I would probably watch again.
Into the Woods (2014)
Won't rush to buy the DVD
Well, what have we here, a Disney movie. OK, I generally love them, especially Disney/Pixar collaborations. My 17 year old daughter dragged me along to see this, she reckoned I had seen a trailer, but I don't remember it, Jeez, I would have remembered THIS movie, but for all the wrong reasons.
Anyhow, we go along and she suddenly says 'I have told you it's a musical, yeah?' I didn't remember that and anyway on the whole I don't have a problem with them, however, this is so much a musical that probably 99.5% of the film is sung, every ruddy line!
After 20 mins in, I am thinking ha, not sure I'm gonna like this. I perked up a bit by the arrival of Johnny Depp, although this was short lived. I thought his lines seemed a bit peado-ish and I said this to my daughter after the film and I thought maybe it was just me, but she said it seemed a bit strange and reading through a lot of the reviews on here it wasn't just me, thank goodness.
I thought at one point (the wedding) every one was going to live happily ever after, hurrah, I thought, finally, the end! Sadly, the giant then appeared and the movie carried laboriously on with the wretched singing and the stupid plot and the morals of right and wrong.
With James Cordon as the baker with the strange outfit and being in the woods, all I could think of was Shrek (oh now there is a great movie, if you haven't seen any of them, you MUST).
At one point the baker's wife suddenly sang out 'I must leave the woods' where upon I muttered oh, yes, please do!
A couple of hours of my life wasted which I will never get back again, on the plus side, my daughter and I had bought a big bag of pick and mix which I scoffed throughout the movie to relieve the boredom.
