Vanity Fair (2018)
Sweet, Sweet Sociopathy!
So here is an illustrated textbook case of a person living with antisocial personality disorder- and THRIVING. Just making her way in the world, like Mary Tyler Moore 👒 & the lessons in unconditional love that she learns from her sweet friend Amelia were my original inspiration for Lennon's middle name. These characters + their arcs are some of the best in all fiction, and this adaptation Absolutely Nailed It. The comedy is relentless, the production value is top level - the book jumps right into the room with you, by jove!, in sumptuously colorful close-ups, indeed some scenes vibrate with an almost uncomfortably autobiographical intimacy. I feel seen! Also, Claire from Fleabag schemes nefariously while wearing increasingly hilarious bonnets and ruff collars. A dream come true, unbeatable, thank you!
The Politician: The Assassination of Payton Hobart (2019)
A correction.
"There are worse things than a musical number"-?? Excuse moi? I'm a former theatre kid, and I'm here to tell you dramatically that the musicality here is a GIFT- an artful, clever, paradigm-shifting look into depression, and the glorious apotheosis of the whole show. When the kids sat cross-legged on a cold floor reading scripts, or practiced elocution exercises, or grew to know and appreciate each other more deeply and realistically through song (!!!), memories came flooding back to me like a warm hug around my hippocampus. I felt personally SEEN. The performances warmed my bones, and now my heart is full of love and melodies and reminiscence. I'm further comforted by the knowledge that other former theatre kids feel it, too. THANK YOU!
