Les chambres rouges (2023)
Great start, interesting direction, but the plot leaves a lot to be desired.
Film starts with a single shot that lasts minutes, using a Steadicam, no music, showing a courtroom and jumping from the monologue of prosecutor to the defendant and finishing by zooming in to the protagonists face. Plante shows great taste in his direction by borrowing from the best: Hitchcock, Scorsese, Polanski, Kubrick, Fincher.
My main problem was, as other reviewers mentioned, the failure of the script in portraying the main character as a person with, motivation, feelings, values, substance. The story is told from her perspective but we learn nothing about her, thus making her actions and the whole story confusing and meaningless from a psychological standpoint. As the story moves forward, we get more and more confused about what she is doing and mainly "why". I don't have a problem with psychologically ambiguous characters unless their ambiguity has a psychological background.
According to the writer - director, this was a movie about the true crime fans and their obsession with violence. But is this character a real representative of this type of people?
In any case this movie was a breathe of fresh air, especially with tons of mediocre thrillers coming out every week. The soundtrack, cinematography, acting was A-Grade.
Voyagers (2021)
Well, that was a REALLY bad idea.
Imagine, the future of all humanity is on the hands of a bunch of teenagers. I mean, what could go wrong! In Lord of the flies the isolation that leads to chaos and murder happens by accident. This movie actually claims that the most brilliant minds of our planet would come up with an idea like this to save our species! At least the acting and the setting was decent.
El reino (2018)
Passable thriller
Unfortunately the story didn't work for me. I thought it was a movie about politics (like house of cards) but it's not exactly. The narrative is not straightforward and you just get fragments of
something that happened in the past. I wouldn't mind that but in the end if you think about the story it wasn't anything new or complex. I can't even compare the script with 70's movies like The Network. It was more of a character thriller focusing on themes like betrayal, blackmailing etc. But unfortunately it didn't work as a character thriller either because the characters were not interesting or i couldn't relate to anyone. If i wanted to see some low brain corrupted politicians i would just turn on the TV. This is not art for me. Direction was ok. Quick cuts, shaky camera, fragmented story telling and rhythmic music helped in making the movie interesting and give some in-your-face action. Actors were great and i think they made the movie.
