I've always enjoyed most of Catherine Tate's comedy/characters, including Nan. Had I relied on reviews of this movie I would have given it a pass, but I've grown accustomed to liking movies that get terrible ratings/reviews. As an aside, Mrs. Brown's Boys is a good example -- pilloried by so-called critics but loved by millions.
In large part the critics seem to be expecting far too much from a film like The Nan Movie. It's a funny, silly, summer road trip type film, with a quite endearing storyline mixed in with the expected fun and frolic of Catherine Tate comedy. There are perhaps a few bits and pieces that could be done away with (e.g., the traffic warden).
I've watched it three times within two months -- first alone and liked it enough that I then watched it two more times with different friends who both thought it was funny and enjoyable. There aren't many films I could watch that many times in a short period and not be bored with. I'll enjoy watching The Nan Movie for the fourth time soon.
