This movie was absolutely beautiful. I have read the myth, but even if I hadn't, I would still have loved this movie. I saw the previews, and knew immediately that I would love watching this movie. I was right.
We get to know the characters Tristan and Isolde, and learn to love and feel for them; when Tristan and Isolde love each other, I loved them both even more.
This movie is mostly romance, but for those of you out there who dislike romance, it has action in it too, and the plot moves and isn't just all lovey-lovey. Both Sophia and James Franco did excellent jobs acting.
The plot is really interesting, about forbidden love, and I found myself teary or crying more than once during this film. The costumes and settings are extremely beautiful, and there was nothing confusing about this plot - it doesn't meander with explaining much at the beginning other than that there is war between Ireland and Britain, and then gets on with the great story.
Tristan is a very noble, lovable hero - extremely so (and not just because we get to see him without his shirt on). He is loyal, he is loving, honest, kind, and not at all selfish. Isolde is equally sweet. She is charming in the firm bonds she forms with those she loves, and is also loving, but also willing to stand up for herself. Both characters have strength, persistence, and giant hearts.
The fighting scenes were excellent. You really fear for the characters, and it's not just all smash-and-bang with swords, there are also bows and arrows, poisonous herbs, shields, and the regular old smash-crash with fists and feet. Tristan was an excellent fighter, but not in a way that made him too much better than the others (as in, it wasn't a cheesy the-hero-always-wins thing, he had to struggle for his wins).
The costumes, also, were something to look at. Throughout the movie I noticed Isolde's intricately designed dresses, and as for Tristan, I really like the knee-length tunics they had him wear. They were stylized and interesting. Very medieval. The atmosphere, clothing, scenery, and architecture of this movie struck me as very authentic medieval. And the Irish ARE played by some real Irish! But all of this I have said, really, is just to satisfy those of you who are extremely picky about movies. I think that if you aren't one of those, you will love this movie. It captures your heart, wrenches it, and doesn't give it back even after the movie is over. This movie will enchant you, take your breath away, make you cry for the eternity of love, and captivate you from beginning to end. Go see it!
