The Paper (1994)
The Paper saves the day!
Directed by Ron Howard, The Paper chronicles a day in the tabloid-life of The New York Sun and its employees; who are about to be thrust into a mad-dash newscycle.
This morning, the tabloid's Metro Editor, Henry Hackett (Michael Keaton) wakes up to find that virtually every area newspaper, except his Sun, nailed the day's main headline: The overnight shooting death of two bankers. The Sun ran a banal headline about parking tickets.
Fed up with constantly being scooped by area rags, and being well aware that his is about to fold due to lack of readership, Henry knows they desperately need to score an exclusive soon! As luck would have it, The Sun unexpectedly gets their chance today.
The shooting deaths have already been pinned on two black teenagers; and area papers, including The Sun, plan on headlining that tomorrow.
Except for this ...
On this particular day, of all days, Henry secretly has a job interview with prestigious competitor, The New York Sentinel (akin to The NYTimes). During that interview, Henry stumbles onto information obtained by The Sentinel for their story tomorrow. It's jaw-dropping, and suggests that the teenagers may have been wrongly accused.
Henry races back to his Sun and urges them to run the sensational headline: They Didn't Do It! It's an exclusive to be sure, but also unsubstantiated! If they are unable to corroborate this counter-narrative by the 8pm deadline, The Sun must fallback to headlining a minor train derailment story or, not to be scooped twice in a row, the consensus media narrative accusing the teenagers; which the staff fears is problematic.
Over the next several hours, a scramble to unearth the truths & lies for this potential exclusive, turns virtually every life orbiting The Sun, upside down!
👍 The Paper (1994) features a star-studded cast and delivers. 👍
Big Night (1996)
A delightful movie that's underrated.
If you enjoy movies that are pure entertainment devoid of propaganda, then this one is for you. Set in the 1950s, it tells the story of two brothers who came to America to open an Italian restaurant - and strike out on their own. Unfortunately, business has never been good as their authentic cuisine never caught on with Americans. Behind on loan payments and threatened with foreclosure, the brothers have one final chance to show the world what they're capable of. They somehow secure a dinner appearance with famous band leader, Louis Prima, who they'll cook a five-course meal for in hopes that positive publicity will send their obscure family restaurant over the top. It's their Big Night.
It's a period piece that is beautifully done. The costumes, the music, the cars, the dancing and especially the family restaurant will make you wish you were alive back then.
Money for Nothing: Inside the Federal Reserve (2013)
Garbage
This is 100% propaganda. If you want to be conned, watch it. Otherwise, don't bother.
El cantante (2006)
One of the best movies you'll ever see.
Some IMDB movie ratings are just wrong. That applies here. Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez deserved awards, they were that good. This movie is super intense and they, along with all of the actors, nailed it. 50+ years after the genre burst onto the New York City and global scene, Salsa shows no sign of slowing down. So if you want to see how Salsa all started -- the record label, the artists, the culture, the times and of course the music -- you need to watch this movie. It's really well done.
