Euphoria (2019)
Strikes a melancholic chord, hard.
I felt a lot like Rue as a teenager and young adult. Drugs took feelings I just couldn't deal with away. Even 15 years mainly clean, I miss instant forgetfulness whenever I couldn't handle things. I've seen some reviews saying 'this isn't how teens act' and let me tell you, I have a bunch of nieces and nephews and coworkers near this age and while it may not be how ALL teens act, from what I see, it's how a good number of them do act. Maybe it's easier for me to see, as I'm not a parent and no parent wants to think their teen's are behaving like this, but *HEADS UP*, quite a few are. I would definitely watch this with my older nieces and talk with them about this stuff. It's not easy being an aunt that gets told things I really don't want to think about them doing, but I've made sure to maintain open conversations with them. Basically, I have told them that they can tell me or ask me anything, and unless it's endangering their lives, I'll keep it to myself and provide them with the best advice I know. They may not always listen but I definitely think we should have more open communications within our young people.
I can't imagine being a teenager now, it seems so much more stressful in such different ways than it felt when I was a teen in the 90's. Great show to get conversations with your young loved ones going.....
The Detained (2017)
SMH???
This seems like a terrible, AWFUL version of 'The Breakfast Club'. I thought it would be mildly funny. ...but no, it's just really dull. Save your time, search the worst movie you are aware of before viewing this trite film...ugh!
Escaping Polygamy (2014)
Realistically over-acted
Having read Carolyn Jessop's book "Escape" (which btw is really good!), I was super excited to see this show! At first, I thought the show was real-ish, until the fourth episode, where 4 or 5 months later in their timeline, there is still snow on the ground??? I think this show does have it's merits in showing outsiders how these polygamist cults work, wedding under aged girls to old men, sometimes ones they are related to. These children in these cults are not prepared for the real world and I think that is so sad!! The men have all the power, the women are scared/brainwashed into staying in these often abusive relationships because that's all they know. I wish this show was a real 'REALITY' show, because I think something SHOULD be done by local and state officials to help these children and young adults. I'll keep watching, but I wish it was more REAListic!
