Tenki no ko (2019)
cliche
From the Director of "Your Name" and frankly it is like the exact same movie. Some generic message in the beginning. Teen boy meets teen girl or vice versa. Anime music montage. Superpower of course. Something about teen love. Separated directly/indirectly because of said superpower, but by chance, the two of them meet again in the end. His two movie plays out the exact same way.
I love anime. Just this one in particular isn't anything special. I don't need some crazy new idea or some story that has never been told before. But when two of his movies are so similar I lose interest very quickly.
All the Money in the World (2017)
No direction whatsoever
Like looking at a collection out of focus photograph. The subject could not be found. Immense wealth? Greed? Mother in distress? Kidnapping - well I'm certain that isn't it, even though that is the main story. Ridley Scott, what are you trying to tell.
And the back and forth scenes showing the wealth of the grandfather. Okay, I got it, he has lots of money.
Movie: Did I mention he is rich?
Me: Yeah, about 100x already. Can we get onto something new by now!
Le petit prince (2015)
Hollywood killing author's work.
I like to think there is two act to this movie. The first act that still relate to the book, and the second act the script writers just added in to fill the last 35 minutes.
The movie begins wonderfully; full of artsy and inspiring animation. All the little side story and characters were left open for the audience to interpret - the same way the author did in the book. The characters were as interesting as they were in the book and the writers adaptation of telling their tale were flawless executed.
However, the second act of the movie felt like a straight-up socialist propaganda. Blaming all the problems on businesses. Mocking academic achievement and hard work. Painting the grown-up world gloom and dread; and anyone who obtain any wealth must be evil. Remember when I said leaving the characters open for interpretation? Nope, The Little Prince has been exploited and any of the original story's meaning has been killed.
