A Discovery of Witches (2018–2022)

How interesting that I agree with all the reviews.
11 January 2022
After binge watching Season 1 and 2, I wanted to see some reviews. And I have to say. There are some varying opinions. And I agree with all of them.

I personally really liked the show. It hit the spot for me.

Other reviewers who hated it...I see where they're coming from. I did have to endure some scenes.

And everyone has said what I would say. I enjoyed the premise. I enjoyed the acting. I enjoyed the fact there were cool creatures.

But this show is about witches. Or better yet, a witch....or better yet, The Witch.

Witches can do cool stuff and some are better than others. And I like that. Its fun.

I wont get into what the creatures can do cause frankly, its boring.

In fact, a lot of this show is boring.

A common theme for shows made for women, by women is to have some underlying agenda that seeps out of the finished product.

Its hard to explain but you can feel it when it happens. Although, the agenda was extremely subtle and easy to get through, but it does separate you from being immersed in a story.

Action scenes had no build up. They just came out of nowhere as emotional outbursts or quick decisions. Its hard to even call them action scenes.

There were loop holes as if they made the first season, then realised the second season might not gel, so they made the characters explain the loopholes or sometimes they were just forgotten about. It was just a bit weird.

Again, I had fun watching this, but I understand the poor reviews.

Hard to review
25 December 2021
Watching the first half hour of The Matrix: Resurrections had me holding my face. I was smiling and cheering and there were moments where I felt my mind melt with confusion about what was real and what wasn't. It was an experience that only some elite movies have achieved. I really liked it.

The movie was definitely a sequel. ONLY for people who have watched the first 3 movies. And it really leans on the trilogy and it feels like it uses the previous movies to prop it up a bit.

But eventually the movie must continue into the plot. This is where I believe the bad reviews come from.

The movie became standard. They had a story to tell and they just told it. Nothing really amazing. But also nothing really terrible.

The special effects used for the machines was perfect. But they relied on special effects for the action scenes and it lost all believability.

When Trinity rides a Ducati through traffic in The Matrix: Reloaded, they used real cars. It felt like a real action scene and you could feel the scale. CGI removes this feeling.

I talked to my friend and he seems to think CGI is awesome because it can bring an environment to life and show the potential of a scene.

Where as I think it disconnects me from the reality and I feel I'm just watching images on a screen. So maybe this is just a matter of opinion.

Bad guys were being introduced and then forgotten about. (Probably because the movie was long enough and they were cut out (maybe)).

You didn't really get time to know any of the supporting characters.

Looking back on the film, it felt like when I was in school and I had to write a message on a poster, and about halfway through, the letters get smaller and smaller because you didn't leave yourself enough space.

Season 2 not like Season 1
8 November 2021
Season 1 was something new. It was something that I thought would be the beginning of a new superhero franchise.

It was fun and the actors were fun and its was as corny as you'd expect it to be. And it didn't apologise for its corniness because it actually added flavour.

Season 2 however, needs to apologise. Its so obvious that the writer's room or whatever had a few people scared of backlash. Making a show with fear in mind makes it so safe its boring.

It feels like a teenage Disney sitcom that's trying to be edgy. But they're scared of getting even remotely close to the edge.

I feel embarrassed while I'm watching it. Like only a fool would fall for this show Maybe the target audience are pre-teens? That could explain it.

But in my opinion, there was nothing wrong with Season 1. Pre-teens could have watched it without getting nightmares.

Its a damn shame that so many shows are scared of letting their creativity flow. Or maybe something else is going on thats holding them back.

Bottom line is that the second season makes me sad that I enjoyed the first season.

How to make it through this confusing world
17 June 2020
It seems that being as genuine and sincere as possible was absolute priority for the acting. Job done well. Once you accept that this is a drama and not a documentary about autism, this show can make you cry, laugh, cheer, cringe and ache for the next episode because your heart feels good after each episode. It makes you think about the affects of treating people improperly. Im pretty sure that bad reviews are from people who say they dont get scared in horror movies, or they never tear up in a sad movie. Sometimes its good to feel emotions and this show lets you feel a range of them.
