Unexpected brilliance.
14 December 2006
This is a movie with a simple and straightforward plot which contains layers and layers of intelligent writing, metaphors and message.

To speak further about the script will end up in spoilers and that would be pointless since my very purpose writing this review is to encourage people to see it.

This is no small feat, interpreting fantasy as something of a product of a real world, cross-referencing how the child acts to her real surroundings and the "other world", metaphors that describe the accelerated state of growing up some of us are put through... Incredible. Simple, straightforward yet there is so much to be appreciated.

Those who are saying how it's predictable and thus not enjoyable, I ask of you, which movie nowadays aren't predictable? Hell, even 21 grams was predictable but so damned good. It's not about how it ends, you can always predict how a movie would end if you've ever taken a half-decent script writing class or have some common sense. It's always about how well you tell a story.

I'm grateful there are still directors who aren't tied down to this new epidemic of including a plot twist simply because they need a plot twist.

Pan's Labyrinth features some of the best storytelling and attention to detail without being affected by the now ever-popular opinion of cameras having to be put through several technical difficulties to make the shots eligible to be called a brilliant shot.

I am also grateful for them not dubbing it. Watching it in its' original language is much, much more rewarding even if I had to rely on the subtitles for most of the time.

This is a brilliant movie. Watch it.

Oldboy (2003)
10/10
Please...
16 October 2005
I've seen reviews on this place that absolutely does not do the movie justice, accusing it of carrying no real message nor having any coherence at all.

While indeed Oldboy carries no philantrophic messages that make you walk out of your door an inspired man to make the world a better place, the storyline is amazingly well-crafted. While this may be the contribution of the manga it was based on, I believe the director and screenplay writers deserve part of the credit to as to why the story worked so well for a movie.

The director doesn't treat the audience as a dumb customer who paid eight bucks to sit down and get fed with Hollywood table scraps. He drops seemingly random lines that make sense later on, with the unveiling of the plot, step by step, graciously. Whereas some lambast this movie for being nothing more than a movie trying to be artsy and violent at the same time, I seriously don't find this movie as violent as claimed.

This is the part where the explanation that the plot has no coherence fails. People compare this with sixth sense and seven and commented that it lacks coherency and sound sense. I beg to differ. If you're too dumb to pick up the clues and hints of the movie, perhaps your brain is the one which lacks coherence.

The fight scenes in this movie are brief but pleasant. There's no fancy martial arts, slow-motion clichés that the movie industry seemingly enjoy so much nowadays. Very well shot too, not the best fight scenes ever shot in movie industry but very well done.

The dialogues are clever and witty, with a slightly dark sense of humour. Very enjoyably so and the deliverance of these lines feel very natural and flows well with the movie, you don't get that feeling where it seems like the characters are saying it just for the sake of looking cool and badass on their screen time.

Very well-crafted movie. I look forward to more similar rare gems.

Batman Begins (2005)
10/10
fanboys gather here please
17 June 2005
batman fanboys finally has a movie to be victoriously shoved to other comic book fans' faces and glee in victory. this is saying a lot, i'm a x-men fan since a child and i found this movie the best comic book adaptation and the best movie this year, so far.

you read that right people, nothing touches batman begins. before i tell you how awesome batman begins is, i would like to do something a lot of batman fans have been dying to do to the people who are in self-denial: to the people who thinks star wars crapisode 3 is better than this, go bury yourself alive. it'd be nice if you can take george lucas with you too.

back to the movie. christopher nolan, incorrectly labelled as a director no one knows, shows just how a comic book movie is still able to keep up with high-quality movies that deserve Oscar nominations. he showed us a comic book movie that doesn't try too hard to be a comic book. Needless to mention he pulled it off beautifully. Beautiful directing, beautiful settings and beautiful imagery.

The actors are solid too. Christian Bale does the perfect bruce wayne. Of course some might say keaton's voice as batman was better than bale's but if you look at the bigger picture, who cares about batman's voice? As long as he doesn't sound like hello kitty on helium or have stupid cheesy lines, I'm fine. Alfred was done really well, the choices they've made for the main villains and supporting characters were brilliant too. Ken Watanabe, Liam Neeson and Cillian Murphy did their job superbly. And yea, you star wars fanboys, ep3 was made up of the cheesiest dialogues ever and some of the worst acting this new millennium has seen.

enough crapisode 3 bashing.

this has got to be the most realistic comic book-based movie so far. although some things are still a bit impossible to be pulled off in real life, there's enough science behind it to convince you that it's possible.

beautiful, beautiful movie. this might be the only movie that makes "fanboy-ism" a reasonable thing to do. this is a superb movie.

it's amazing how that guy who did blade trinity can come up with this fantastic script. the combination for this movie is perfect.

only problem would have been the action scenes, it's hard to see who's punching who sometimes.

however this seemingly big flaw is overshadowed by the countless excellent things that makes up this movie that it turns into a very minor problem.

you'll enjoy this movie.
