Darr (1993)
One of Shah Rukh's better films
I myself am not a huge fan of SRK. Mainly the romantic SRK. But I do know he's made some good films here and there. Darr is one of them.
I'll start off with the acting. This film was early on in Shah Rukh's career, this is when he was in his villainous phase. Back then he was not what he is today, an overacting romantic. He was actually pretty good when he started off. In Darr he impressed me. Even though he did tend to overact in regular scenes and ham at some points, most of the time he was excellent. His portrayal of the obsessive man creeped you out and kept you hooked, and in the intense scenes his intensity, emotional displays and just his overall nature made you feel for the character. I really liked his performance in Darr. It wasn't really the usual SRK. Besides that Sunny Deol and Juhi Chawla were good, they had good chemistry. But really besides them, it was all bout SRK.
However, besides the leading actors doing well, the rest of the film was average. It still had cheesy classic Yash Chopra love, good music, some clichés, some cheesy scenes, and other things like that. But really SRK helps you to forget about that.
Overall, I think this is a pretty good film to watch, especially if you are a Shah Rukh Khan fan. Even if you're not, like me, you can still enjoy pre-romantic phase SRK. Overall this is a good 7.4-7.5ish out of 10.
Raja Hindustani (1996)
A pretty good Bollywood entertainer, I don't understand the criticism
Raja Hindustani, released in 1996, was a huge blockbuster. It swept nearly all the awards at Filmfare that year and the actors and songs became a sensation.
But nowadays people look back and have begun to criticize the film, saying that it is cheesy, over the top, and stuff like that. Sure, it has some faults, like a typical clichéd Bollywood love story that is up and down, cheesy dialogues, and some quality mistakes. I admit, the story was kind of stupid. But honestly, it's a Bollywood film, so what do you expect. I mean many of Shah Rukh Khan's films have all these things as well, but you don't really see people criticizing those.
There were two reasons why I liked this film, and why it entertained me. First, the performances. Karisma Kapoor did pretty good, she danced well, and looked good overall throughout the film. Raja Hindustani also contains one of Aamir Khan's finest performances. One of his underrated ones actually, if you look at it today. He was earnest, likable, he was excellent emotionally, and overall really impressed me. He didn't really overact as SRK does.
Besides the performances there was also the music. Who can forget Raja Hindustani's songs? Nadeem-Shravan and singers Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan did great by singing songs such as Pardesi Padres and Aaye Ho Meri Zindagi Mein.
There was also some good comedy throughout the film.
Overall, I think Raja Hindustani is a pretty good entertainer, I don't understand why people don't like it anymore.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001)
Another highly overrated Shah Rukh Khan film
KKKG is a typical Shah Rukh Khan romantic film. Rich and lavish lifestyles, good locations, expensive and fancy costumes, cheesy dialogues, some overacting, and nice music. I honestly don't see why people like KKKG so much, it's really overrated actually.
First of all, the story is similar to what we have seen from SRK many times before: A man going against his peers or society because of love. I mean, the story was stupid, predictable, and cliché filled. SRK promises Amitabh that he'll marry whoever Amitabh chooses, but then has to end up falling in love with Kajol, the one person Amitabh does not want him to marry. This problem is made into a big deal and SRK leaves the home. We've seen SRK get into romantic trouble many times before. And when Hrithik came in and started saying all these dumb lines about family togetherness it made it even more cheesy.
The performances in this film bugged me. SRK was the same as he is 95% of the time, the same overacting romantic who gets annoying to me. Kajol got irritating as the loud Punjabi woman, Kareena Kapoor's character was dumb and annoying, Jaya Bhaduri did alright in her little role without much talking, Hrithik, who is a talented actor; he even got a bit annoying, but he did pretty well in emotional scenes. Amitabh stood out the most because of his intensity; even in his small role. One thing I also didn't like was how they made Amitabh's character seem so bad, just like in Mohabbatein (which also sucked).
The one thing I did like in this movie were the songs. But that's really about it.
Karan Johar is honestly one of the most overrated people in Bollywood along with Shah Rukh Khan. Now I know SRK can do good at times, but in films like these (which are most of his films) he gets annoying.
Only watch this film if you are a romantic or a SRK fan.
Drishyam (2015)
One of the best and most intelligent thrillers made in Bollywood
Drishyam is a film that I had been keeping my eye on ever since it had been announced. And when it opened, it opened to outstanding reviews and I went to go see it for myself. And I have to say, those reviews were all right. And even though the film is a remake of a South Indian movie, this film is still outstanding.
The performances were excellent. First off, hats off to Ajay Devgan. I feel with this film he has redeemed himself after doing films like Himmatwala, Rascals, and Son Of Sardar. His performance was intense, natural and overall great. Tabu also did just as good, and she really impressed in the interrogation scenes with her intensity and emotion. Shriya Saran and Ishita Dutta, who I have not seen before in films, did very well also and they were very impressive and convincing. And the little girl was adorable. Overall, the entire cast did excellent.
The story was gripping and intense. And even though the film had sort of a slow pace, the films intelligence makes up for that, as shown in the ending and how they show Ajay Devgan conning the police. The direction was also very well and same with the dialogues.
Overall, if you love thriller movies, or just want to watch a great, intelligent, and entertaining film, watch Drishyam.
Rangeela (1995)
A good musical with a great performance by Aamir Khan
Rangeela, directed by Ram Gopal Varma (who has made very good and very bad films) is a pretty good musical movie to watch with the family.
Even though the movie had some faults, like a typical and predictable storyline along with some editing mistakes, there were still some good things in this film.
First off, the film itself is clean and more of a family film. It has some pretty funny comedic scenes and I'm sure a lot of kids would enjoy it.
Second, the performances. Urmila Matondkar, who the film is focused on, does a pretty decent and convincing job, and also danced well in the songs. Jackie Shroff had an average performance, his performance was a typical Jackie Shroff performance. Aamir Khan, however, did a great job. In this film he played one of the first tapori street thug type of characters in Bollywood history, and he did very well. He fit in to his character to the finest and maintained the accent and style of his character throughout the film, which is very hard to do. It wows me that this is the same man who was in Andaz Apna Apna the year before. He stole the show for me.
And last, A.R. Rehman's soundtrack. This was one of his finest soundtracks, and all the songs, from "Rangeela Re" to "Yaaron Sun Lo Zaara" were all very melodious, catchy, and overall good songs which helped the film.
Overall this film is a nice film to watch with the family and to watch for Aamir Khan's classic performance.
Rang De Basanti (2006)
Wow! Rang De Basanti left me speechless!
Man, what a movie. This movie was stunning and literally left me speechless at the end. It was highly thought provoking and left me amazed. It really made you want to go out there and change the world. The message of the film hits you hard, and in a good way.
This film used a subject that people don't really use in Bollywood; and that being youth. And boy, this film handled that subject really well. The portrayal of the youth was realistic, accurate, and relatable.
Second, the cast. The casting was great. All the actors played their parts extremely well. Siddharth surprised me with his performance, he did really well. Soha Ali Khan performed exceptionally. Atul Kulkarni, Kunal Kapoor and Sharman Joshi all played their roles to their finest. Madhavan was good in his cameo, and Alice Patten was also surprisingly very good, and even though her Hindi was sometimes annoying, she did well. Aamir Khan stole the show; this was one of his best performances; he also really deserved all Best Actor awards that year. I can never be disappointed by Aamir. He does everything in this role; from comic timing to strong emotional ability. And he even maintained the Punjabi accent throughout the film. Wow.
The direction, dialogue, and story were incredible and strong. The story keeps you interested and gripped. Hats off to Mr. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. A.R. Rehmans' music was fantastic, another great soundtrack for the legendary composer.
All in all, if you want to see and inspiring and well made, film, watch Rang De Basanti. You will surely be impressed. You will feel inspired. It will touch your heart. No wonder this film started a movement in India to rid corruption. All youth have to see this film.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)
Salman Khan's best performance and film to date!
Salman Khan is known for starring in over the top total masala action movies. He is known as the big tough hunk who just beats up people and takes off his shirt a lot to try and show off his muscle.
Well, in this film, Salman Khan broke out of that. This film is not a mindless masala movie, this film was a movie in which the makers used their minds. This film was an exceptional work.
First off, this film is one of the few films about Indian-Pakistani conflicts in which their is no bias towards a particular country, Second, both of the countries are shown as good and bad in ways. So, the film handled that subject from a good point of view.
Second, the performances. Salman Khan, man, really showed me he can act if he wants. His performance as Bajrangi was natural, heartfelt, and simply great. You can tell he really enjoyed doing his role and gave his all into it. This I would consider to be his best performance right next to Radhe in Tere Naam.
Kareena Kapoor was pretty good, even though she had a smaller role.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui was hilarious, but at the same time, natural. He played the supporting role to Salman Khan really well. He did great and I think he has great future ahead of him since his last couple of films have had him giving very good performances.
And who can forget the small girl (I don't know her name though). She stole the hearts of the audience and was adorable. She also acted pretty well and I think she handled herself very well.
The direction and story were also very good, and the songs and music throughout the film really helped to add some emotion and some fun.
All in all, this film was a very nice film that everyone should watch, People of all ages will love it.
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001)
Stunning! Lagaan is one of the best epics of Indian cinema!
Wow. This film really deserved an Oscar. Because this film is the definition of a perfect film. And not the masala type of commercially "perfect" film, but the perfect film from a cinematic experience point of view. It has everything. First off, a great and inspiring story that features Indian villagers facing cruel and unfair Britishers in a game of cricket, which is something the villagers have no experience of. If the Indian villagers win, they are free of the British in their area and the enormous and painful land taxes they must pay. This story was inspiring and very exciting to watch and gripped me till the end. I cheered when India was saved in the end by the catch that didn't count. Second, the performances. Aamir Khan was magnificent. He played his character with so much passion and intensity. This was truly one of his finest performances. Also, the lead actress Gracy Singh did great and also showed that she has the skills to be a fine actress. The rest of the cast, including the British actors, also had powerful performances. And the third reason this movie was great is that it had everything. Drama, romance, action, thrill, intensity, great music, powerful and intense performances, and great direction by Ashutosh Gowariker that made one of the most gripping and inspiring stories come so finely onto the screen. Also, A.R. Rahman's soundtrack was beautiful; one of the best soundtracks in Bollywood history. His music helped add to the film's emotions. This movie deserved all the awards it got and also definitely deserved an Oscar. Overall, I would rate this film a 10 out of 10 and recommend anyone to surely watch this masterpiece!
Phir Hera Pheri (2006)
The disappointing sequel
I have to say, the first Hera Pheri was hilarious and probably one of the best Hindi comedy films ever. But Phir Hera Pheri really doesn't live up to that.
A lot of the jokes were lame and somewhat immature, and there was a lot of extreme overacting at parts. Rajpal Yadav and Johnny Lever weren't really at their full potential of comedy, and honestly they got annoying.
The story was a ripoff.
The performances were decent. Paresh Rawal once again did the best, he really saved this movie. Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty were average. They both were good in parts however. Rimi Sen and Bipasha Basu are nothing. They were just there to attract people. However, here and there there were some scenes that reminded you of the prequel.
The music was bad. Since this film was released at around the time Himesh began to sing and act himself, the music is mainly Himesh singing himself and that was painful to hear.
Overall, this movie had high expectations, but mainly disappointed. I'd rate it an overall 5 out of 10.
Dhoom:3 (2013)
Aamir Khan does great, but the rest of the film is questionable
Many people have said that Dhoom 3 was a cheesy and childish film. It really wasn't that bad. I mean, the stunts and effects may have been cheesy, and many scenes may have been cheesy, but honestly, I didn't really notice that. And that was thanks to Aamir Khan. I may sound biased, but, he acted very well in this film, in his double role. He handled the role of a tough and serious Sahir very well, and also the role of the mentally challenged Samar very well. He is really the best actor in Bollywood as of right now. He saved the film from a weak story. Even though he did great, I still kinda wonder why he chose this film. Anyways, besides Aamir, the rest of the movie was indeed not as great. Abhishek Bachchan's role was sort of neglected, and his role felt small, even though he is technically the main character. Uday Chopra was terrible; honestly, if they make another Dhoom, they should kill off his character, because it is very annoying and Uday Chopra cannot act. Katrina Kaif did her usual role, where acting isn't really required. All she does is show off her body and speak poor Hindi. The story also had some faults and things that didn't make sense. However, most of the scenes were acted out well, and many of the action sequences had good effects. But then again there was the bike on a tightrope scene. So the effects weren't too good. You could say the film was shot well, though. Also, the music was good. Overall, Dhoom 3 wasn't really a great movie, but I suggest people to watch it only for Aamir. He will entertain you. I would rate this movie a 6.5 out of 10.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
One of the most overrated films of Indian cinema
I don't even know how the hell this film has been deemed a classic. It is cheesy to the core. The "acting" by Shah Rukh Khan is really bad, and honestly, I didn't really see anything special in his acting. I know he has the potential very now and then, but I really wouldn't consider this one of his finest. All I really noticed was an annoying laugh that kind of sounds like a goat. Kajol did okay, I think she did the best in the film though out of all the actors. And another thing I don't understand is how do people think this is a good film? I mean, SRK is a troublemaker who goes around causing mischief, and he falls in love with a serious girl (Kajol). Kajol literally lies to her parents, because she said that if she goes on her trip, she'll marry who her parents choose. During this trip she lets SRK do many awkward things to her and then they fall in love and then SRK crashes her wedding, and then Kajol totally forgets about her promise and all that crap. I mean, in one scene SRK literally undresses her while she's unconscious and then changes her clothes! That is messed up. And last, there is so much cheesy dialogue, and the story is filled with clichés. Anyways, the only thing I liked was the music. The soundtrack of this movie was excellent however. I only recommend this "classic" to people who are overly romantic. Overall I rate this film a 5.5ish out of 10. I really don't consider this a classic, I think it is overrated.
Ishq (1997)
A good mix of everything
The main reason I watched this movie is because of the great cast. Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgan, Kajol, and Juhi Chawla. That already gets you excited. The actors all did great, even Johnny Lever. This movie is a perfect one to watch with the whole family, because it has some great scenes and it's a totally clean movie. It has everything in it- action, drama, comedy, romance, and an overall good story that is told in true Bollywood style. I mean even though its a typical story filled with clichés and Bollywood masala, it entertains and is above average. And really, the movie has a great message, which is that all people are equal, rich or poor. Many people think that poor people are not equal to the rich people. The movie also says that there is nothing wrong in falling in love with a lower class person. The songs were also good as most of 1990s Hindi films had good music. This movie overall was pretty good.
Andaz Apna Apna (1994)
The best Indian comedy film ever!
Two of Bollywood's biggest stars, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, unite in this hilarious joyride! This film is the best Bollywood comedy film ever, period. Only Hera Pheri is at it's level. The jokes are hilarious, the references are great, Aamir and Salman, along with Paresh Rawal, and the duo of Bhalla and Robert, and Shakti Kapoor as Crime master Gogo really entertain! All the characters are remembered well and iconic. All of the actors had such good chemistry. The movie has really great comedy and a great script. So many of the dialogues are remembered today, such as "Happy Birthday Rabbit!". Many of the scenes are also remembered today, like the cups scene and the Bade Mamoon Chote Mamoon scene. That's how good the script was, along with the directing. I'm really surprised at how the heck this wasn't a hit at the box office, because this film really deserved it! .The story was a common, typical Bollywood love triangle type of story, but the story was played out really well, and that makes you forget about the basic story being common. Everyone should watch this film, I guarantee you will be laughing!
PK (2014)
Another masterpiece by Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani!
When the posters for the movie came out, I knew that this movie would be exciting, controversial and interesting. It truly is. Dealing with the highly debated and controversial topic of religion, this movie perfectly points out the faults and errors of modern day religion (not saying religion is bad) and how people make money and others fools because of religion. And, this movie doesn't insult the religions really while pointing these things out, which was also really cool. Aamir Khan did amazing as PK, and he was hilarious. He really is the best actor today, because he does the best roles and his perfectionism helps him to do great movies. Everyone else also did good, from Anushka Sharma to Saurabh Shukla. Even though the movie has some clichés, like the Pakistani Indian romance, you really forget about that because the film keeps you focused on the message it is trying to say. And they did get their message across, all right. If this is the most successful Bollywood film of all time thats saying something. Everyone should watch it, from kids, to adults to religious scholars. Now I can't wait for the next Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani movies!
Koi... Mil Gaya (2003)
Hrithik is great!
This is a movie to watch with the whole family. It has a nice story (even though it's kinda like E.T.), nice music, and great acting. Hrithik Roshan did amazing in this movie. He played the developmentally disabled Rohit very well, and he totally fit the character. He totally deserved all the awards he got for this film, because he did superb. His dancing was also great. Preity Zinta was okay as well, but she didn't do great. The only things that needed work on was the effects, (but you forget about that due to Hrithik's good acting), some clichés and some pretty cheesy scenes (the basketball scenes). But overall, I think that many people will enjoy this movie, and kids as well, because this is a kid friendly movie and it is clean. Out of the entire Krrish series, this one is definitely the best.
Dhoom (2004)
A time-pass movie to watch for fun
This movie is basically like a wannabe fast and furious and it tries to be many other things. But that is Bollywood. If you don't really care and aren't really thinking and want to get entertained, than this is a movie you should watch. The acting by Abhishek and John Abraham was okay; good enough for their first hit movie. Obviously, Uday Chopra was horrible and annoying to the core. He tries way too hard to be funny and cool. The music was good, though. There was some comedy, but some of it was not really that funny. The only thing I really remember this movie for was the cheesy action sequences and the repeated "Dhoom Machale" music and tune. Overall, the movie is okay and, I mean, it isn't horrible, but it isn't great. It still entertains, though. I would rate it like a 6.3 out of 10.
Taare Zameen Par (2007)
Every child is special!
This movie was great! It was a truly inspiring movie that everyone should watch with the whole family. It teaches many valuable lessons and it shows us that everyone is special and good at something, no matter who they are. Aamir Khan is great in this movie, and this movie really gave him another great movie in his amazing career. Darsheel Safary, the child actor, did excellent and really surprised me. The direction and story was marvelous and inspiring, and out of the ordinary. The music was also good. This movie is a very inspiring movie that makes you really think and it is very emotional. Every one should really watch this.
Dil Chahta Hai (2001)
An excellent movie that portrays the youth
This is one of the first Bollywood movies I saw, and I loved it. This film perfectly portrays the youth and shows their lives really well. A lot of the scenarios shown are relatable and have happened to many people in real life. Everything about this movie is great, starting with Farhan Akhtar's direction. He did majority of the writing and screenplay for this movie, and he did great. He also directed it very well. What a way to debut as a director. Second, the performances. Everyone did great. Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna did great and fit their roles nicely; Saif did great as the helpless flirt and he gave a good natural performance. This performance revived his career. Akshaye Khanna played the quiet Sidd very well, he handled emotions well and his performance was also very good. Preity Zinta also impressed. But it was Aamir Khan who stole the show. He portrayed Akash very well, to the point where you could not even imagine that it was originally Akshaye Khanna who was supposed to do that role. Aamir became the character himself. He showed everything from perfect comic timing to excellent emotional display. Another thing I really liked was the entire cast's chemistry. It made everything look so real and natural. You really thought that Akash, Sameer and Sidd were real friends. The music is also great, with classic songs like "Jaane Kyon" and "Who Ladki Hain Kahaan". The story was gripping and nice, even with some small clichés. It was also however extremely relatable and enjoyable. Im sure many, especially the youth would really love this great new age film.
Hera Pheri (2000)
The best Indian comedy movie besides Andaz Apna Apna
This movie is very hilarious and entertaining! It has great dialogue, great comic sequences, great entertainment and action, and great performances, most notably Paresh Rawal. He has immortalized the character of Baburao as one of the most remembered Bollywood characters of all-time. He is excellent and hilarious, and his timing is great. Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty do great as well, and they also did great comedy. Tabu was sort of wasted in her short role however. The script is great and iconic; so many of the dialogues like "Kaun Devi Prasad?" have become famous and remembered. Honestly, the only thing that threw me off was the music; it wasn't too good; only "Jab Bhi Koi Haseena" stood out. The direction was also pretty good; this film is what gave Priyadarshan a big name. But besides that, if your'e looking for a great time, this film gives you that for sure.
3 Idiots (2009)
The movie is great!
3 Idiots is a righteous movie. It shows everything wrong with the Indian education in a great way. Even though it is on a serious topic; it makes its points in entertaining yet understandable ways. The story is also extremely relatable.
The story really helps to make these points. It tells of a simple man named Rancho (Aamir Khan) who comes and changes a college based on his thinking. I think the story was very well played out and that the story and ideas fit in very well together.
The performances were splendid. As always, Aamir Khan never fails to impress. He played Rancho to the finest of his abilities. He had everything- from perfect comic timing to perfect emotions for serious scenes. Sharman Joshi and Madhavan also impressed and did their roles well. Kareena Kapoor was exceptional in her role; she fit it well. Omi Vaidya really impressed me, even though he can't speak Hindi he was still hilarious. And Boman Irani gave perhaps one of his finest performances. The accent, the style, the lisp, he did everything well.
Rajkumar Hirani, the director, is one of the finest film makers ever in Hindi Cinema. He makes good, thoughtful films which aren't mindless and are worth your time, and this film is definitely worth your time. His direction was superb.
Overall, if you are looking for an entertaining, relatable, heartfelt, emotional, romantic, and serious film, watch 3 Idiots. Especially if you are in college or school, as you will then enjoy it even more. This is one of the best Indian films ever made.
Mohabbatein (2000)
Too much love, to the point where it gets funny
This movie was recommended to me by a friend, who is a crazy Shah Rukh Khan fan. This movie, first of all, has a message that is completely wrong. When you are in College, you don't focus on love and the spirit of love and all that crap, you focus on education. Second, Shah Rukh Khan did the same, cheesy acting he has done in all of his movies. His acting is always the same, and the only time it changes is when he plays a villain. However, he did do well in some intense scenes, and even though he was saying a bunch of stupid stuff, he still made his presence felt in those few scenes. Third, the young actors in this movie, (besides Jugal Hansraj and Jimmy Shergill) all did horrible. Uday Chopra is just plain horrible and annoying as always, and all three of the girls got annoying, including Aishwarya Rai. (but mainly because of the stupidity of her character). The only things I liked about this movie were the great performance of Amitabh Bachchan, because he totally controls this movie, and he fits his character extremely well. He makes the biggest impact. The music was good though. Overall I would rate this a 4.5 out of 10. Do not watch this unless you are a romantic who can handle extreme love and cheesy dialogues, or are a SRK fan.
