Ghosts of War (2020)
Enjoyed the movie!
I was a little unsure what to expect of this movie, because of the many bad reviews and a few which rated it medium to medium-good. After watching it last night I must say I very much enjoyed it, and I don't understand what all these people are whining about !! It has a good storyline, solid acting, a well-designed set, and technically it doesn't fall short at all. Regarding the ending? A nice twist, unexpected. Original and not too bad. As for the people who are unable to comprehend anything except a cliche black-and-white ending, please skip ahead and go watch a Marvel movie or something. A well-deserved 7 stars for Ghosts of War !!
Infini (2015)
Pleasantly surprising, good sci-fi!!
As always I started weighing my choices of movies for the evening by consulting several movie-review sites, amongst which also IMDb. When I saw the 5.4 rating I thought it might be some kind of cheap-shot bad attempt at movie-making, however after going through some of the reviews here (most of which were actually encouraging) I decided to give it a try anyway. What I got was almost 2 hours of so much tension that afterward I realized I had literally not moved my face away from the screen during the whole movie. Personally I like this kind of sci- fi. The dark, claustrophobic, tense scenario provides for a genuine thrill. Character development is not very deep (it's not exactly that kind of movie), but is certainly not lacking. The production value is up to standards as well, good CGI but definitely not overdone (did not need to be overdone as no compensation for a lack of plot is needed). The movie reminds me a bit of Pandorum (2009) and Sunshine (2007). My only comments on the script/plot is that they could have cut several scenes short by a few sentences, which would not have resulted in any loss of quality and would have maybe improved the progression slightly. But I dare to say that Infini is better than 90% of the sci-fi stuff produced in the last 10 years. I absolutely loved this movie and would recommend it to any true sci-fi fan.
The Cobbler (2014)
Very, very solid watch with an unconventional Adam Sandler
OK so I was looking for something to fill up my Monday evening when I stumbled upon The Cobbler. At first, when I saw it was starring Adam Sandler I was a bit reluctant to give it a try. Usually his movies do not impress me very much since they're often much alike, with the same type of jokes and slapstick humor (I did enjoy Grown ups and Click though). However, since I read that this movie was quite different from the things he had starred in before, I decided to give it a shot after all. Nevertheless I went in with pretty low expectations. What I got was a pleasant surprise. The plot is original and I liked the general atmosphere of the movie. Although I agree with some critics who say that the transitions between some sub-plots could've been smoother, I definitely don't view it as a big issue. There were some subtle, funny moments, but none of the regular Adam Sandler stuff. I like how he stepped out of his conventional mold and tried to make something different. The final twist was a bit outta-nowhere for me, but it made for a nice ending so I'm not complaining about that. All in all this is a nice watch, not a masterpiece but personally I find it sure beats a lot of the higher-rated stuff.
The Little Death (2014)
Funny and original, good acting! Overall a great watch.
Personally I find this movie a highlight of Australian comedy filmmaking. A very funny story with all the actors flawlessly picked for their respective roles. There are some explicit scenes, but they served a more illustrative role to the story, while the humor is brilliantly disguised in the social situations and the absurdity of how things play out. Even the ending was very much to my taste!
In addition, the Little Death very much displays the (subtle) differences between Australian and Hollywood comedy and filmmaking. A lot more is left to interpretation and some situations can definitely be viewed from both a funny and sad perspective.
All in all, I absolutely recommend this movie.
