Southpaw (2015)
Inevitable comparisons
It is natural to draw comparisons to this movie and the obvious Rocky franchise. This however is a movie of redemption. Redemption not in the squared circle, but redemption in life. Jake Gyllenhaal is fantastic as the tortured lead, but it is the supporting actors Forest Whitaker and Oona Laurence who steal the show.
The movie is gritty and real and explores the darker side of the fight game and how ruthless it can be.
You follow the highs and lows with the lead character and sympathise with him. Any movie which uses boxing as its back drop inevitably has a similar formula to the obvious Rocky, but I would heartily recommend this to anyone who likes gritty dramas.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Could have been better. So dark.
Loved the mandalorian, bored by bobba fett. I was hoping this spin off around an integral character would have set the bar high. It didn't. The episodes were clunky and varied between mediocre and good, mostly mediocre. But most of all it was so dark, literally. Spent most of the episodes squinting at my tv or adjusting brightness to see anything. Season two seems to be in the works, fingers crossed they up their game and contrast too.
Band of Brothers (2001)
Amazing
One of the greatest tv series ever made. When viewing a show such as this one always draws comparisons to the book and factuality. This is nigh on perfect. An example of how tv shows should be made. There will never be another show like this, simple as.
The Midwich Cuckoos (2022)
High expectations.
I saw the trailer for this at the cinema and actually thought it could be a good update of a classic. How wrong I was. The plot is immensely slow, the children are more annoying than scary. I binned the show after five episodes, my wife completed it. She wished she binned it after five episodes too.
Kingdom: Lie Down in the Light (2017)
Late comer to this gem
I was late discovering this rough diamond. Always been a huge fan of Grillo, an underrated actor. This show blew me away. An emotional rollercoaster. Each character perfectly flawed enough to relate to. Each season surpassed the previous, and the end was pure gold. Recommended this to so many people and I'd even put it up there with Sopranos as one of the best shows I've ever seen.
