Echoes (2022)
Waste of time
This mini series makes no sense from start to finish. The same excuses that the leading character (Gina/Lena) uses over and over again are just annoying and ridiculous at some point.
The plot goes round in circles for half an eternity, so that you have the feeling it's not going anywhere. You neither understand the motives of the characters nor what it is all about.
I gave it a try because of Matt Bomer, a great actor, but this one is a real fail and waste of time. A rating of 5.9 is still too high imho. I gave it three stars.
You should watch The Sinner instead. That's a great show from start to finish.
Dark (2017)
Completely overrated - waste of lifetime
Tried to watch the full first season but stopped somewhere because this show wasn't my taste.
When you look at all the 10 star reviews it feels surreal as this series is neither a stellar performance or production nor an interesting story in my opinion.
The acting didn't convince me at all. I wonder what kind of movies you have to see to call this kind of acting outstanding. There can't have been many. The characters don't seem profound either. I certainly can't take them seriously and empathize with them.
All in all, I can't take the whole story seriously. It's more that it seems unintentionally funny in many places. This series isn't "dark", it's just unrealistic to a degree that makes the whole thing ridiculous at some point. One wonders who makes up all this implausible nonsense that happens throughout the story. It's more of a crazy fairy tale.
Maybe you have to be very young to like this kind of series. In any case, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Was just a waste of lifetime. If you want to watch a great show with amazing, charismatic actors, a great plot and outstanding writing go for Yellowstone. This is a real 10/10.
Shining Girls (2022)
Too confusing for my taste, don't like the characters
Stopped watching after 35 minutes before falling asleep. I didn't even want to know what would happen next. No excitement. Maybe I didn't watch long enough but the story made no sense to me and I didn't like the acting either. The way the main character is written feels odd.
When watching a series or movie I need that special feeling that you get when you get sucked right into another world. I felt no connection to this and to the characters. Some reviews say its slightly confusing. It definitely is and for me there are too many things that don't make sense in this pilot.
On top of that, time travel is a very special element that requires a lot of thought, both for the writers and director and the spectators. Just saying, it can be difficult to realize without getting confused.
And no: This review is not "agenda driven", whatever that means to people. Its just my opinion. After watching around 120 tv series I think I can judge that.
Ozark (2017)
One of the best shows ever. Period.
Ozark has a phenomenal cast and an incredibly exciting story. Especially Julia Garners performance is out of this world. Every season is phenomenal. They could have continued the show since it had not yet passed its zenith. This show is a must-watch and deserves a 9,5 - its definitely better than Breaking Bad.
To the showrunners:
You can easily create a spin-off and with such a great cast/story it could be a masterpiece again. For example the Byrd's kids could play a central role in it.
Just think about what could be possible in the Ozark universe.................amazing!
Yellowstone (2018)
Must-see drama
Very thrilling & dramatic, incredibly exciting, surprising, passionate, visually stunning and breathtaking, authentic characters, great script, fitting soundtrack, brilliant dialogues, Oscar-winning acting.
Nevertheless, all these attributions cannot describe the great atmosphere of this show. There is always a tension in the air, no matter in which episode. There is a smoldering embers, a conflict that makes you bite your fingernails. When the episode is over, you go to bed unsatisfied, because it is so exciting that you want to continue watching immediately. This series is serious and funny at the same time, always in perfect balance.
You don't have to be a Western fan to watch it, to love it, because it's not about Western themes.
The Dutton family simply has what it takes. They take things into their own hands and don't let anyone intimidate them. Even if they sometimes proceed very brutally, as a viewer you are always on the side of the protagonists, because this family demands respect from you through their rough life and their life achievements over generations.
Kevin Costner plays like in his prime - he's not dancing with the wolves anymore, he's a wolve himself now - and also the rest of the crew is killing it.
What else can I say:
Beth is a monster, a tornado. Kelly Reilly deserves an Emmy for her incredible performance as Beth Dutton. What a woman. Powerful, expressive, passionate, quick-tempered and aggressive, yet sensitive, vulnerable and empathetic. Her character is already a legend in pop culture. People sell t-shirts on the internet with the best comments of her. Her performance is unmatched, playing in a league of her own.
Yellowstone is one of the best series ever created. I give it 10 stars because I don't know how it could be even better. You won't be disappointed.
