The Thing from Another World (1951)
Still Watching the Kies in 2022
I saw this movie about 30 years ago and brushed it off as another 50' sci fi that really was a good time killer but nothing more.
I then saw it for a second time and was amazed that a fast paced interesting story of invasion from another planet along with a great B movie cast punching above its weight particularly Kenneth Tobey and Margaret Sheridan. A great supporting cast of.the always steady John Dierkes, Robert Cornthwaite and special kudos to Douglas Spencer as the wise cracking, pessimistic Newspaper Man Ned Scott.
The writing and directing also raise this movie from a B to a B++ movie. You definitely see the Hawkes impact even though he wasn't given credit for directing. The fast paced banter as seen in "HisGirl Friday" is on display.
This movie comes down to us against them, and there is no quibbling about who's side you better be on.
One of a couple of movies for some reason I can watch again and again, like Jaws, Red River, His Girl Friday and this.
The Story That Couldn't Be Printed (1939)
Prescient Episode under Another Despot
Today, April 27th 2022 we have a government in power that advocates censorship by proxy using Facebook, Twitter etc., to silence dissent. That was not enough as we have Elon Musk opening the doors to all and have free speech for all. Frightened by free speech we now have a Department Of Homeland Security establishing a Governance Board of Disinformation. In other words Government sponsored Censorship.
The documentary starring Victor Killian hits the nail on the head of free speech and the first amendment and should be required viewing for every school child and even some university students that seem to have forgotten Zenger and free speech.
Seven Days in May (1964)
Did it just happen?
On this date the Joint Chief Of Staff General Milley sat before a Senate hearing on Afghanistan and the behavior of General Milley that has just come to light. Courtesy of a book by Woodward and Acosta. They claim in their book that Milley thought President Trump to be unhinged enough to launch a nuclear strike against China. They claim that Milley had phoned his Chinese counter part in the PLA that if a strike was to occur he would warn them first. It is also claimed in the book that Milley got together the Joint Chiefs and told them that any orders given directly by the President to them , must go through him first and that they must swear to that. Milley nuanced all of his answers today and denied some of them. Questions remain.
I just found it coincidental that this great movie ran on TCM on the same say as this event.
The kead actors and the supporting cast in this prescient film were all outstanding. Great movie.
