Smartly done
26 January 2022
Old white guy finds this show smartly written, well acted, with believable characters.

No Disney caricatures here...real dialogue with real people.

Those who favour the usual dumbed down formula sitcoms will balk. No laugh track, so, guess what... You get to pay attention to find your own fun. For these reasons this show will not appeal to middle America, as it's,frankly, too smart for tv audiences. Maybe as time goes on, they will get some variety into the cast.... Most every character is the same age, with little if any diversity.... maybe a kid or two?

The further the sitcom world gets away from the drivel of Family Ties ,The Connors, and the Bundys, the better.

This one satisfies that trend.

Well done!

Appalling writing, worse acting.

Hard to know where to start with this one.

A lot of money went into this appalling mess. How did it get past test audiences?

Look.... this really isn't worth spending my time on a bad review...just don't bother.

Adults playing at being kids
21 June 2021
Canadian film makers can usually be depended on for a whole pile more reality when it comes to Kids/teen movies. Disney has ruined entertainment for and about these demographics, but we could usually look north for relief from their drivel.

This is one glaring exception.

Good writing can only get you so far, and the writing of this one is admittedly pretty good.... it is a funny film.

However, casting a 27 year old adult in the lead as a high school student.... hugely prevalent with Disney.... has me moving on to something else instantly. At what point did Casting think anyone would be convinced....27, really?

It actually all feels more than a bit creepy.

Irritating hosts
17 March 2020
This is a collection of quite possibly the most irritating hosts of any genre on television now, or in the past. Each one of them has "had a little work done", to the point they are plastic caricatures of themselves. The only redeeming feature is seeing the eye candy of some of the properties. But ultimately, the distasteful personalities of those on screen drive us to the clicker. Avoid!

More Disney than reality.

Very disappointed in this film, though not particularly surprised. American film makers don't do kid/teen movies very well, and this is no exception. At no moment were any of the actors even remotely believable as any known, real life teenager. The fact that none of them were actually teenagers at filming is the first giveaway. 22 year old guys can't play 17,ever. But it goes well beyond that. The writing, sets, staging, all of it is such goopy homogenized pap, it suits a Saturday morning slot in the cartoon lineup. The premise was smart, and beyond that a complete washout. What could have been a tremendous opportunity to tell a fun yet important story, instead falls completely flat. In the hands of a dozen or so European directors I can think of this could have been a terrific coming out tale, but I suspect none would take it on....they've done the coming out genre many times, all so much more successfully than this mush.

Fresh Off the Boat (2015–2020)
Fresh off the boat

I found this promising show to be a bit of a let down. Lots of kudos for the step forward for Asian programming but the opportunity for a great premise was lost. Aside from a couple cute kids, the cast is ultimately quite unlike able . The father is stilted and struggling, the mother downright mean spirited, without any of the charm or humour of past TV's mean moms. Actual humour is very hard to find. But the most unappealing part of the exercise is the fact that seemingly every line spoken was about race. I am sure the writers wish to make their point in this regard, but too much of anything is,well, just too much....maybe to the point if wallowing in a very deep pool of its own stereotypes. Too bad...it could have been a great, fresh look at this community,so obviously missing from prime time. However,we suspect that this little show will drop off the charts fairly quickly, leaving that void intact.
