Purple Haze (1982)
Overlooked Film
Its a shame this film isn't more widely known or on DVD. Perhaps its due to its year of release. I watched it on HBO in 1985 and have tried to get a VHS, then a DVD copy since, but it doesn't appear to be around.
Its an excellent story of a period in American history that some may choose to forget, but as with any history, its important to try to understand what and why it occurred. Having lived in that period, this film delivers its spirit.
I really don't remember the details of this film, but remember that it really struck me, especially the final scene of the bus driving away. Wish Amazon would place it on Prime.
Megaforce (1982)
Negative 8 Stars for Movie; 9 for Riftrax Version = 1 star
The only way to watch this waste of film is with a sufficient quantity of a strong adult beverage and DEFINITELY ONLY watch the Rifftrax overlay version. Even then its a bit painful as you still have to see the corny costumes and what are supposed to be super-vehicles. Try to watch it in black and white (or psychedelic) - adjust the color contrast on your monitor.
Amazed that 20th Century Fox released this load of dino-excrement after its success with the Star Wars franchise and other great films. But maybe someone thought it might be a cult classic like Rocky Horror (but Rocky Horror had far superior acting and a script). Most likely the financiers took the hit for wasting $20 million and not the studio, but this was the Marv Davis ownership period, after all.
Its amazing that some films are green-lighted - this being a prime example of pouring money into a black hole... hear that sucking sound - matches the movie.
Anyway, get the Rifftrax version and the requisite adult beverage of your choice and enjoy a fun parody.
The Sasquatch Gang (2006)
Surprisingly Fun, Quirky Film
I started watching this film and stopped, as it was much too sophomoric in its first Act and not very promising.
Then later I decided to finish watching it to kill some time - glad I did. The interwoven story line is brilliant with some hilarious scenes and dialogue - pay attention to corn dogs.
Once watched, I had to see it again from the purely technical perspectives of good storytelling and direction. I really enjoyed how the beginning becomes the hilarious end with each Act feeding the others. Brilliantly pulled off! The camera placement and framing really help tell this story and keep it quirky; its a film that will be hated by critics for its dialogue and plot, but loved by those seeking some fun viewing escapism as well as new filmmakers seeking ideas on plot development and effective capture of its many scenes.
If you liked (or tolerated) 'Napoleon Dynamite', you will definitely enjoy this fun little gem of a film. If you don't, you need more fiber in your diet, sunshine in your days and a smile on your lips.
