The Curse (2023)
So far, it's great
It's amazing that A24 have branched out to tv series and it's only fitting that it be a Nathan Fielder production. His work is already entered into the comedy halls of fame with unique yet mainstream, "Nathan for You" and the quintessential ode to living performativity in "The Rehearsal", now-only one episode in-I feel there is another entry being made.
Immediately it has a darker feel. This might be due to the title and narrative theme, but I think it's more than that. Nathan's persona is has much less control, is even more emasculated and less likeable. It's like he has taken the darkest parts of his Nathan for You persona and amplified them, then given the reigns over to a new "documentary filmmaker". There is so much superficiality to explore in this series and it is so fascinating watching influencer-cum-gentrifiers (Fielder and Emma Stone) begin to unravel as they undertake a new enterprise in a little-known poor community and start to face obstacles.
It will be interesting to see if they garner any sympathy because right now their are no likeable characters or anyone you really want to get behind in a hero's journey, except for maybe to community of characters they are inflicting their self-serving (but emphasis on the 'serving') initiatives on.
I must say, the first episode has probably the most cringey-hilarious sex scenes I have ever seen in my life. The show is intense, but in a great way. I had to watch it in two sittings with a pause in the middle because there is just so much anxiety building, but it is excellent and I can't wait for the next session.
1923 (2022)
Underwhelming season 1; slow and unrewarding
The character development is slow with obstacle after unbelievable obstacle placed in front of the protagonist, Spencer, as he tries to return home. This series is so much slower and more boring than 1883. 1883 had the pace and excitement of an extended movie, with strong progressing narrative episodes partnered with continuous character development that keeps you interested. Much like a Band of Brothers approach; story, momentum, and self-contained to one season.
1923 has interesting characters but they grow so slowly it's boring to watch. The first couple of episodes established a lot of promise for the quality of the series but then the narrative just stalled to a snail's pace. It's an absolutely tedious series compared with 1883 and doesn't match the expectations created by the previous series, nor even its much-enjoyed predecessor, Yellowstone.
In 1923, we are acutely (sooo acutely) learning the difficulties faced by this pioneering family but they are boring to watch and over emphasised. The most interesting story arc is that of the Native American girl overcoming her horrible oppressors and finding a path back to her life with family and on the land. The Dutton-side of the narrative is a broken record of "we are downtrodden and old" and the journey of Spencer and his American-as-British (terrible accent) wife is full of nonsensical difficulties. I tried embracing the nonsense of their journey but then we got to the end of the season and we hadn't really gotten anywhere. It was so boring and I feel deceived; like this is the click-bait version of a tv series: all promise and underwhelming delivery. 1883 and Yellowstone are brilliant but 1923 is just flogging a dead horse. It could be great if the episodes we halved and pace doubled.
1923: Nothing Left to Lose (2023)
Such a slow season and anticlimactic season ending
