King the Land (2023)

Two great leads, but could have been more!
24 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Firstly, the series doesn't deserve the low rating it has. The storyline is interesting, the 2 leads are fabulous and there's some very nice support from the supporting actors and actresses, notably Grandma.. It is a little overlong and tends to include some irrelevant padding, such that we often skipped a little to get back to the main story. The plot involves a girl joining a prestigious Hotel in Seoul and giving it her all to make a go if it. She meets the rather detached and brusque son of the chairman, who initially is very unlikeable, due to his difficult upbringing. He comes over as arrogant and unpleasant. However, gradually as he gets to know the girl, he starts to thaw and a relationship starts. As with all the Korean movies in this genre, it doesn't go smoothly, and they have to overcome many obstacles. However, the chemistry between the leads is great and they make a very believable couple. The ending rather spoils things and is a mess with a will they/ won't they theme running. That made me drop a star, but otherwise there was much to enjoy in the series. I certainly wouldn't pan it as some have done.

Excellent Korean Historical Drama - a Must See
23 April 2024
Having seen Park Eun Bin in Extraordinary Attorney Woo (also well worth a watch) I looked for her other work and found the King's Affection. At the same time (and being a fan of S Korean music. I kept hearing songs from the film soundtrack. So my wife and I settled down to watch the series.

Immediately, we were blown away by the stunning cinematography, the beautiful sets and costumes. It is a visual feast to watch! It tells the story of Joseon era royalty and all the crafty, ruthless plotting in the Royal court. The two leads were excellent, with a beautifully nuanced performance from Park Eun Bin and very good chemistry with Rowoon as her co star. The whole cast were fabulous, we thought. Especially the young versions of the leads. The baddies are wonderfully bad and the goodies just so nice, but everyone has their flaws too.

It's moderately violent throughout but not gratuitously so and the fight scenes are well choreographed.

The music accompanying the film is outstanding and will have you humming the tunes for sure.

A delightful series and highly recommended!

Excellent Twisting Turning Political Drama
3 April 2024
I liked the sound of the plot and the series had some very good reviews so I decided to give it a go. After a slowish start, with the scene being set, the drama, skulduggery, Intrigue, mayhem and more began. The story depicts a rich and powerful Korean corporation and the lengths they would go to to broker deals and gain power. To help them with this, they employ a Fixer. Hang Do Hee, who is adept at manipulating anything to the corporation's advantage. She has been a loyal servant for ten years. Something happens to make her question her loyalty and the story begins in earnest. The acting is excellent throughout, with really nasty baddies and really good goodies. The plot has more twists and turns than the Nurburgring! It depicts a world of politics where trickery, corruption and bribery are rife, with the media and the police all in the pocket of the wealthy corporation - nothing like real politics then! 😁.

My wife and I enjoyed it enormously and 11 episodes was just the right length. There is some talk of a second season and there are certainly more avenues that could be explored. Well worth a watch if not a binge watch! A 9 from me.

Get past the beginning and it improves a lot
5 February 2024
Since I enjoy cooking, especially Chinese cooking, I was tempted to watch this and gave it a go. It tells the story of an ambitious young chef who has built up the reputation of a posh hotel's kitchen to an award winning standard and has gained a Michelin Star in the process. All is not well, however and he is ousted from his prestigious job by the unscrupulous management. He vows to take revenge and starts a small Chinese restaurant directly opposite the hotel with the aim of drawing their customers away. He is helped in this by a gangster and his henchmen, who at the beginning were annoying and unlikeable. Stick with it though - they improve. The cast are great and work well together, but the star of the show is Jung Ryeo-Won who is an absolute delight to watch as the love interest for the young chef. She is seriously cute and has a terrific flair for comedy too. Watch out too for Jang Hyuk as the gangster boss who is much deeper than he at first appears. Lee Jun-Ho plays the young chef and there is great chemistry between him and Jung Ryeo-Won. It is fascinating to watch a busy Chinese kitchen at work and to watch some of the dishes prepared. Well worth a watch in my opinion.

Gentle, Lovely, thoughtful drama with amazing photography
30 August 2023
This series is lovely. It is about life, love, loss, pride, duty, relationships and so much more. It relays the story of a lovely old station master and his daughters and explores what happens after he retires. He has always wanted to revisit some places and some memories and now he is retired, he has time. The series then explores what happens afterwards and delves deep into the relationships of his daughters and their boyfriends. One daughter, who is one of the main characters, wants to discover her roots and sets out to follow her father's journey to see if she can find the answers she seeks.

Some may find the series slow and if you're looking for an action movie, this definitely isn't. But what it is is a wonderful story of how a number of people develop with time and with changing relationships. The music is calming and quite special and the photography is simply tremendous!

If your prepared to spend the time, it's very enjoyable!

You have to stretch credibility, but it's well worth a watch.
27 July 2023
I watched this with my wife. We both find Korean dramas very engaging, with an excellent cast and photography that really impresses. Fabulous soundtracks too! This series is no exception. It concerns a young man who, unusually, is unable to feel emotions and constantly decieves those around him. The story is a twisting, turning drama about the main character's father and his childhood, which left him emotionally scarred. He falls in love with a detective - or does he? The story encompasses murders, deceit and much more and features an outstanding cast, right down to the little girl who plays his daughter (who is a little heart-melter 😁). You'll have to watch it to decide for yourself whether you trust him. The ending was certainly not the usual kind and completed the series well!

Almost perfect but you have to concentrate!
11 July 2023
This is another one of those really good and well crafted series from Korea. Their photography, casting, acting and plots are just SO good. The plot involves two Koreas in different dimensions with the same people but who may be subtly different. In one dimension is the Kingdom of Corea and in the other the Republic of Korea. There is of course a wonderful love story with the two very charismatic leads, with real chemistry between the two. There is also a dastardly villian who is really nasty! The only thing stopping me giving it a solid 10 is the difficulty of following the plot and which dimension and which "version" of the cast we are looking at. It does get easier to follow at the end and the conclusion is satisfying though I won't tell you which way it goes!

Stunningly Good SciFi Whodunnit!
7 June 2023
This is a simply excellent short series. The plot twists and turns, the acting all round is superb and red herrings are thrown at you all the time! But what a ride!

You need to suspend disbelief just a little but the cast are so engaging it wasn't hard to do so at all.

The plot revolves around a young couple, one a policeman and his wife l, a young magistrate. She is murdered and years later her still distraught ex husband is investigating the case using new Virtual Reality technology to revisit the crime scene.

Strange things start to happen. And gradually possible perpetrators for the crime emerge. But which one is the real killer?.....

Top marks France for an excellent short drama series!

Very Well Cast and Engaging Story
28 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There is much to like in this series. The cast are excellent and there is great chemistry between the two leads. The villains play it wonderfully too.

The story concerns a horrendous fire at a factory that kills a team of firefighters. The news reporters villify the Fire Chief for sending in his men and causing their deaths. His family are devastated. The story follows events over the next 14 years and how the firefighter's son becomes a News Reporter and in doing so meets the love of his life.

The story is intricate and full of twists and turns. The ending is very good and ties it all up nicely.

It could have been condensed a little and some parts coukd be shortened or left out. That would have then earned a 10 from me.

A Proper Action Film!
3 February 2023
I thought they had forgotten how to make an "edge of your seat" action film. "Plane" proved me wrong!

It's a proper action thriller, with great cinematography and fantastic sound that gives you some genuine shocks. The acting is good and Gerard Butler in particular turns in a great performance - totally believable as the seasoned airliner Captain. In the film he has to fly a group of passengers on a flight in the Far East. Of course, the flight is destined for problems and we have the usual complement of difficult passengers too. I won't spoil the plot by telling you what happens but the film cracks along nicely, with plenty of thrills and some great action scenes.

My wife and I totally enjoyed it! Great film!

Simply Charming and Beautifully Axted
30 October 2022
This needs only to be short. One of the most delightful series I've ever seen with a stellar performance from Park eun-bin. It is hearrwarming and quite comical in places, but wonderfully portrayed. The supporting cast also give it their all. Woo Young-Woo develops her character from the very unsure rookie Attorney at the beginning to learning a lot about herself and her ambitions on the way. In the process she meets someone special and learns from him too. I'm sure that Park eun-bin most have spent a lot of time studying autism and probably meeting autistic people too. Her portrayal is amazing and really has to be seen. Not to be missed!

Solid Actioner With a High Body Count
4 August 2022
After trawling through some very lightweight Korean dramas, my wife and I fancied a bit of grit and came across this. It's low-key and a little depressing with a BIG body count. That said the performances are solid and it depicts a battle between rival mafia gangs very well. After a while you start rooting for the leads to win, but be prepared for some surprises and plot twists!

There was a great performance from the actor playing Chief Ma, who turns in a performance very reminiscent of Ahn Oh Ju in the fabulous "Lawless Lawyer." I wonder if the character played was based on that? Either way it was a great characterisation.

If you're ok with plenty of of killing and blood it's a pretty good watch!

Absolutely Charming Series with Wonderful Performances
3 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This series is a delight from start to finish. It tells the story of a down on her luck schoolgirl who meets a magician - but is he, or is he an ordinary man, or is he something more sinister?!

The series leaves you guessing right to the end and it does really have a beautiful ending!

The performances throughout, especially from the young schoolgirl are an absolute delight.

A truly feel good series!

It's a decent film! Cracks along nicely!
24 July 2021
I can't understand the negative reviews on this. I am a very impatient watcher and if something isn't up to scratch it quickly gets switched off. This film grabbed from the start and cracked along at a good pace. I won't give the story away, but it does have a very interesting idea for a plot, it's well executed and the CGI Aliens are truly scary - much more so even than in Alien (though this film does borrow an idea or two from there). Acting was good and the action sequences were fast paced and well done.. Interesting plot twist at the end too!

Watch it - I think you'll enjoy it!

Well Crafted Series - With a Plot not an FX Fest!
20 June 2021
I've become heartily fed up of so many series that rely totally on boom bang a bang CGI! Ragnarok has some great special effects but here they support the plot rather than being the plot The acting is good by all and the storyline is convincing. The scenery of the fictional "Edda" is truly stunning and will make you want to visit Norway for sure. I won't single out any of the cast for praise, they are all well chosen and are great. The series is well paced and plenty happens to keep you interested. I will be very disappointed if they don't make a Season 3!

Fun Twisting Thriller!

Caught this on Sky and it was a lot of fun. Great characters, twisting plot and an absolutely blistering performance from Kaley Cuoco as the Flight Attendant coming apart at the seams. Very good supporting cast too. The plot moves very quickly and it's never dull! Recommended!

Why all the negativity??
25 December 2020
I think too many people reviewing this film are from the CGI "boom bang-a-bang" generation who expect plenty of action and loud "thrills." Well this film is different. It is paced slowly and thoughtfully, with stunning visuals and terrific acting -especially from George Clooney who plays his character wonderfully. The story unfolds slowly and carefully and is quite enigmatic (I must say I still haven't worked out the little girl?) That said there are plenty of tense moments and you never quite know what to expect next. Granted one of these was telegraphed and it was pretty obvious something bad was going to happen, but when it came it was still edge of the seat stuff. The story concerns relationships and the importance of caring for our planet. It isn't an instant gratification film but if you are prepared to invest some time in it you will find is worth it.

Edge of Your Seat! Stunning Performances
24 October 2020
I don't think I've ever given a 10 for a film, or if I have, very rarely. This film is guaranteed to have you glued to the edge of your seat! Matt Damon and Christian Bale play wonderfully off each other, both showing they are at the top of their acting game! I can't remember when I last enjoyed a film this much. The rest of the cast were perfect too with fantastic portrayals of corporate greed and arrogance from the Ford Executives and superb nuanced performances from Catriona Balfe and Noah Jupe as Ken Miles' wife and son. This is really a film not to be missed. Everyone from petrolheads to Mums can't fail to be enthralled!

Amazed at the bad reviews!
19 September 2020
Well I've been a fan of the whole Terminator series and was very nearly put off this by the relentless bad reviews. However, I thought I would make my own mind up. And....it isn't bad at all. Brilliant to see Linda Hamilton back in a kick-ass role. McKenzie Davies was great too and Arnie was his usual self. The action is pretty non stop with great special effects and the story ticks along nicely. It's not Oscar material but for an evenings decent viewing it's fine. I can't see why there is so much negativity towards it.

Charming Film with Stunning Cinematography!
5 May 2020
We all grew up with the wonderful Winnie the Pooh and his delightful friends and he still holds a place in the hearts of most of us even as grown ups. This film depicts the relationship that grew between A.A. Milne, author of the Pooh books and his son, known affectionately as Christopher Robin. Domnhall Gleeson and Will Tilston play the rather stand offish Milne and his son. It depicts how they were thrown together by circumstance and how they developed the most amazing fathet-son relationship. The supporting cast are all excellent and help carry the film nicely. It also depicts very well the trauma of how the first world war affected Milne with what would now be known as PTSD.

The standout feature of the film, aside from the charming story, is the cinematography which is simply stunning. Life for Christopher Robin and the 100 Acre Wood are shown in the most beautiful countryside of Sussex.

It is the latter part of the film where father and son really play extraordinarily well together as Alex Lawther plays the grown up Christopher Robin going to war. What follows will really tug at your heartstrings!

Very well worth watching!

Having read some good reviews we sat down with this last night. It was wonderfully filmed with stunning cinematography and really engaging characters. Will Smith is excellent and Naomi Scott and Mena Massoud as the Princess and Aladdin are outstanding. Throw in some wonderfully colourful Bollywood style dancing and it's a treat. Highly recommended!

Way better than a 6!
27 December 2019
This is a really great, fun buddy cop movie - with a twist. One cop is human (Will Smith) and the other an Orc who is being trialled in the police force against huge prejudice by the other cops. Add in some elves, some magic and plenty of action and wisecracks and we have a winning formula! It just gets better and better towards the climax with some unexpected twists - which I won't spoil. A solid film currently on Netflix and well worth an evening with some popcorn!

Simply Stunning Series
4 December 2019
I was looking forward to this because it is so unusual to see a Japanese/British co production. So much stands out in the series. The cinematography is amazing and the equal (or better) of any mainstream movie. The characters are intricately plotted with real depth and even initial dislike of some characters is quickly replaced by an understanding of why they are as they are and what shaped them. It is impossible to single out any of the actors/actresses they are all so good. Very engaging characters and multi-layered performances.

The plot revolves around a cop sent to London to bring back his brother who is a Yakuza gangster that he had lost contact with. In London he meets Kelly McDonald as a female cop and a will they/won't they relationship blossoms. There are some violent scenes revolving around the Yakuza and a wonderful performance by Chatlie Creed-Miles as a "Sarf London Gangster" Honestly the series is an absolute must. I very rarely give a 10 to anything but this richly deserved it!
