The Expanse: Babylon's Ashes (2022)
Finally. But....
Finally. This is what The Expanse is all about. Epic battles and sleek improvised fight strategies, with big thrilling storylines and tight execution. Overall, a good final episode, which makes up a bit for the lack of substance in earlier episodes.
I can't end this review though, without saying that what I expected would happen did happen - the episode ended up very rushed, especially the second half. Had they wasted less time on empty dialogues in the earlier episodes, and split this episode into 2 different episodes or something, this season could have ended on an epic, rather than good, note. But still, they tried, and delivered something that worked, even though not as well as it reasonably could.
8/10.
The Expanse: Why We Fight (2022)
Back to Form.... kind of
Finally, an episode this season where the plot actually moves. This reminded me of those Expanse episodes from Seasons 3 and earlier we all have come to love and that made most of us fans. However, this episode should really have been earlier in the season, not the penultimate episode. Now, we'll have just one episode for the final fight and to wrap things up. Not ideal. Disappointed in this season, mainly because I feel I have been wasting my time watching all the other dud filler episodes when I could have started with this and not missed much if anything.
The Expanse: Redoubt (2021)
Frustrating
Don't get me wrong, this was not really a bad episode by itself. I mean, in the middle of a 10 episode season, this would be a good one to setup the rest of the story. But come on, we have 2 episodes out of 6 left, not for the season, but for the entire series, and there has honestly not been anything significant that has happened all season. I kinda feel like the entire season so far could be skipped and it would not really affect the story an inch. No plot movement, no crazy twists, no mind blowing action. Nothing really has changed since Season 5, just ships changing locations and lots and lots of talking. Honestly, unless the last 2 episodes are really mindblowing nonstop thrilling action, I would call this season a dud .
The Expanse: Nemesis Games (2021)
Too little, too late.
First of all, this episode should have been earlier in the season. There were 4-5 episodes of filler that could have been handled in 2 episodes, leaving time for this episode to be earlier in the season. At the very least, Naomi's rescue should have been in Ep9, leaving the final episode to deal with the reunion and the Ring/Martian story. Overall, I am very disappointed in this season, but this episode (and Ep4) saved it from being a total disaster.
PROS:
-One of the best ship battles in Expanse history (especially the Roci/Belter battle)
-Finally back to the Ring/protomolecule storyline though it kind of sucked they saved that for the last 10 minutes.
-Reminded me of what regular episodes of the Expanse were like pre-season 4.
-Saved this season from being a complete disaster especially after Ep9
CONS
-Alex's death and the reaction to it was poorly handled and blemished the entire episode. An off-screen departure in S6 would have been way more effective.
-Naomi's rescue was anticlimactic. We all knew she would survive so drawing it out the way it was done was pointless. If she died, then that will justify the drawn out story.
-Fatal flaw for this season was leaving the Ring/Laconia story till the very end. Building some mystery around it in the last 4-5 episodes would have made the ending more impactful, and left less time for the filler we got regularly. Wasted opportunity.
Overall, since Amazon picked this show, we have gotten the 2 worst seasons. S4 could be excused as a needed change of pace/theme, but S5 is just disorganized and reeks of lazy/bad storytelling. Let's hope S6, being the final season, gets back to what the first 3 seasons were (esp S3).
The Expanse: Winnipesaukee (2021)
DISAPPOINTED
C'mon. How can this be the penultimate episode of the penultimate season of such a show as The Expanse with so much going on in the show's world? Worst episode of the show so far. Worse, there are 2 very vital storylines in the books missing from this season, so there's really no excuse for the lack of plot movement (and I haven't even read the books just read though the summary). All the episodes since Ep 5 could really have been condensed into 2 episodes max. There was no excuse for Naomi's rescue not being in this episode. This episode could have been skipped and it would not affect the plot an inch. Why do we care about Amos' boring journey? We learn nothing important about him. Clarissa Mao could have been removed from this season and it would make no difference. What is the point? Belter and UNN ships fight and it is just a passing sentence. Pallas is destroyed and it is an afterthought with no idea of how it affected Belters/Inaros. The finale better be really fkn good or this season belongs in the trash. Really disappointed.
