Sam & Cat (2013)
Full of low level discrimination
After watching a few episodes with my 8yr old, I asked her not to watch it any more. I was disgusted by the low level bullying and discrimination that peppers the show. The way characters are portrayed and treated if they have a lower intelligence than Sam is awful. I really dislike the way she treats Cat. It's condescending at best. I think the way it is written is not a great way for kids to learn respect for others. The low level sexism and misogyny I also wasn't keen on.
Carmen Sandiego (2019)
Good fun for adults and kids alike
My 8 year old and I love this. Strong female characters, strong male characters, great writing; it's funny, action packed, and with great ethics and morals without ramming it down your throat or being preachy.
Can't wait for the next series!
The Dragon Prince (2018)
Best new children's animation for a while.
I'm 45, my daughter is 8. We both love this show. The animation feels a little old school at times but I think it adds to the charm. I've not seen the last airbemder so can't compare.
I love the wry humour and sarcasm from the older children, and how blunt they ate at times. It's not unlike listening to my daughter and my niece(14) and nephew (12) interacting. Some of it goes over my daughter's head but she gets enough of the nuances to find the humour funny.
As a nerd/geek type person I love that they're showing the (slightly) darker side of elves/humans fantasy. I think the have the balance of character types and for once there is ethnic diversity within the humans. Personally I think it needs more but it's a good start. I think it shows how much more of this is needed in animation generally when you notice not everyone is white. I also like the male/female balance and that the aunt speaks in sign language. (Though subtitles when she's not being translated would be nice).
I hope the bring out a series of books to go with this. It would be a great way to bring young readers into the fantasy genre.
