The Nevers (2021)
Spellbinding
The first five episodes are pure delight. The sixth is a disappointment. Still I am looking forward to seeing the next six. I wish the series had not been canceled.
Shows featuring Time Travel are common. Some like Bodies have a gimmick that defies logic. Thus far The Nevers hasn't fallen into that trap.
Usually the episode that contains the origin story is fascinating. Unfortunately this one is opaque and poorly scripted.
The show is still worth the investment of time to watch
The characters, mostly women, are believable and compelling. The British establishment is appropriately stuffy, conservative and clueless. They embody the fear the powerful have of losing power.
Obliterated: Last Call (2023)
Tries too hard to be funny
A British sense of humor and restraint might have rescued this ridiculous spoof on saving us from Nuclear holocaust. The opening episode was good and it was downhill from there.
Shelly Hennig as team leader could not be taken seriously.
Alyson Gorske was great as Lana and totally unbelievable as Anastasia.
C. Thomas Howell phoned it in.
Terrence Terrell was the most consistent and believable character as Trunk.
Just about everyone is naked or topless in at least one scene but only rarely does the nudity move the plot forward. I assume it was just to pander to the audience.
Go back and watch the spoof of Bond, Casino Royale with David Niven, 1967 to see it done well.
Grimm: The Grimm Who Stole Christmas (2014)
Blew it on Orthodox Christmas
Orthodox Christmas is in January outside of the winter solstice..
Orthodox churches are unlikely to be Carpenter Gothic
Orthodox choirs are unlikely to sing western carols.
A short conversation with a Greek person would've cleared up the inaccuracies.
Eastern orthodox worship is very different from western worship.
Otherwise the episode was unremarkable.
Still waiting for Juliette to turn bad and become interesting.
She's the weakest character of the regulars.
I will miss Trubel. She was a welcome addition.
I'm committed to finishing the series but I wish it weren't so predictable.
Adalind is always good to feature.
Legacies: Long Time, No See (2021)
Aging teens
The actors require an act of suspending reality to believe they're teenagers. Most are too old to pull it off.
Maybe they should reset and make it a grad school. Some are a little old for that too.
The Magicians: Oops!...I Did It Again (2020)
Time loops really
One of the oldest and weakest tropes in Science Fiction. It's a weak way to cut the Gordian knot.
