Before the Rains (2007)
A Romantic, but Tragic Love Story
The movie centers around an extramarrital affair between a married English man and his married female Indian servant. The affair leads to tragic consequences to the two lovers and their families.
Good plot, acting, and cinematography. I highly recommend this movie.
Ma (2019)
An average horror movie
The plot is not very good, acting is OK, cinematography is average.
This is supposed to be a horror movie, but I did not see much horror nor thrill.
Green Book (2018)
Highly Interesting Movie
This movie is interesting in many ways. The one that appeals to me the most is the movie challenges many of our conventional perceptions - A white driver working for a black boss, a white man with limited exposure to cultured language and social skill against a black man with much more exposure, a black man with more exposure to Western music and culture than American black music and culture, etc.
Good plot! Good acting! Good cinematography! What more can one expect from a movie?
Gone Girl (2014)
An entertaining, but not memorable movie
This movie is based on the novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn. Having read the book, I looked forward to viewing the film. I was disappointed. Movies adapted from fictions tend to be not as good as the originals. This movie is no exception. It cuts so many details from the book that the movie seems to be much shorter and simpler than the fiction. As a result, I like the book a lot more than the movie.
The movie is about the marriage life of Nick (played by Ben Affleck) and Amy (Rosamund Pike). Amy disappeared on their fifth anniversary. All the circumstantial evidences point to Nick as the murderer. Was he the killer? The twisted plot around this question is the interesting part of the movie. However, the movie is too long (2.5 hours), unrealistic, and at time unreasonable. For example, what is the motivation for Amy to commit murder? The conclusion of the movie is as disappointed as the book's.
I didn't have any strong impression one way or another after sitting for two hours and a half watching the film. I didn't remember any particular scenes, nor pieces of music, nor dialogue.
Here are my general scoring. Plot: Average, confusing sometimes, 6/10. Acting: Ben Affleck - good, Rosamund Pike - Very good, 7/10 Cinematography: Good, 6.5/10 Music: nothing memorable, 6/10 Dialogue: good 7/10 Overall impression: Movie is too long. Average to good, boring, 6.5/10
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Good acting and photography, average in plot and dialogue
With great reviews and the Oscar award for best movie in 2015, I looked forward to viewing the film. I was sorely disappointed. I tried to love it, but could not. Except for the good acting, the film offered me little to love. May be I was spoiled by over-expectation. Whatever the reason, I didn't have any strong impression one way or another after sitting for two hours watching the film. I didn't remember any particular scenes, nor pieces of music, nor dialogue. I just had a general feeling of boring and confusing. This film is another example of
