Away from her
2 February 2008
Why all the buzz behind Away from her? I am always fascinated by the movies that get buzz from nowhere: the charming little miss sunshine is a great example. So this is why I rushed to rent this film: all the nominations, all the awards. hey, they were saying Julie Christie was better than Cotillard (because that's what winning an acting award means, right?). well, I was disappointed. this is an OK film.It is better than a movie of the week. It deals with very pertinent issues very well. And the acting is top calibre. But, it doesn't deserve all the buzz. Julie Chritie, gorgeous and captivating as always, is not better than Cotillard this year.

Refreshingly honest---finally in the UK
27 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This is a Refreshingly honest show. And it is finally been shown in the UK. It takes a great deal of guts for anyone to show themselves at their weakest. that scene when she meets the three nbc producers and she pushes her oversize self as if she was miss universe herself is TV at its best. I love the writing (or structure as I am not sure they followed a script) and the acting. Why is it that shows such as this and Arrested Development don't find a place in the US? I think they would love to have more shows like that here in the UK. And i would give Kirstie Allie an emmy and not to the standard network comedians or drama actress.

Self indulgent
15 October 2007
Michael Clayton is to G Clooney what K pak was to K Spacey, an exercise on self indulgency. But the viewer is at falut here. We know that actors producing, starring and influencing their own movies are bound to demand being in every scene, long deep unnecessary close ups, long speeches, and whatever it takes them to get an Oscar nomination. All that was missing was clooney having sex or half naked...or maybe he was, but i was too busy yawning and clearing my eyes as to not fall asleep and make sure i got my $15 worth. This is a pointless movie about evil business written by people who don't understand businesses acted by people who have never hold a position of management in their lifes. Please don't waste your time.

What a mess of a movie
16 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
There is no doubt that the lead actor in this film is exciting to watch act and think as he solves one clue to the next. And I absolutely loved the last scene in this movie. My problem with the movie is that once they tell you what has been going on, anything that happened before seems over the top, unjustified and plain silly. Without getting into "spoilers", yes, it is a very logical story, but without the very essential back story (their childhood stories, the relationship amongst the 3 parents, the relationship amongst the two lovebirds and the son of the Big Man), it just doesn't feel right. I felt cheated and wished I hadn't wasted 3 hours on that. If they do this film in the US, I hope they take care of that and many other limitations this movie has.

Pretentious, pointless and boring
11 February 2007
This movie was pretentious, pointless and boring. I am big fan of Amores Perros and the first to support hispanic artists. But this movie was simply silly. Unlike Amores Perros, Memento and similar movies, this never comes together. The Japanese story could and should be a whole movie in itself. The north African story doesn't work because we never get to care a bit about the wife and because those 2 kids in north Africa are simply annoying. Then the Mexico story had the most implausible casting since they had white people playing black characters in Hollywood in the name of gael garcia bernal. Like, yeah, he is from Mexico, but no he clearly didn't belong to that family. It was funny to see European looking gael as the only family member of this very mestizo family. Hey, it does happen, but it there are at least 2 or 3 good hispanic, medium profile actors who could have played that role without distracting because of their skin colour but they went for the most overexposed actor in Latin America to raise the profile of this movie. All in all, a waste of time.

Puzzled
8 June 2006
This is what I don't understand: Kevin Bacon delivers the performance of a lifetime, and doesn't get nominated for any of the major awards in the film industry. It is definitely all about PR, marketing and the budgets that go with it. This movie is thrilling, transportive, unique, wonderfully written, intense, disgusting, shocking, amazing and satisfying all at the same time. Yet, you don't hear about it in any of the major awards. The young cop has the best lines in a movie ever and we don't hear anything about it in the media. i simply loved this movie, It is sad that COnnie and Carla get media attention and this movie is condemned to obscurity

Never seen such a strong unjustified media campaign against a movie
22 May 2006
Never seen such a strong unjustified media campaign against a movie. We went to see this film yesterday despite the fact that every single review said the movie was dull, lacked spark, was poorly made, etc, etc. To our surprise, Tom Hank's hair wasn't distracting, and we were pleaseantly entertained and amused by the whole thing. The British actors steal the show, no doubt, and we have seen Tom hanks do better. But the movie delivered the goods solidly. The only weak link in the movie is the otherwise amazing Audrey Tautou. We have seen the french actress devour the screen in Amelie, Dirty Pretty Things and a few others. She is an accomplished actress, no doubt. In this movie, she was acting in some scenes, in others, i think the director told her she wasn't going to be in the scene and she was flat, amateurish and dull. So I fully recommend it, forget the reviews, don't know why they are so against this film. And it is fantastic!!!

It never comes together
1 May 2006
This movie never comes together. I think the problem with this movie is that the story is actually very basic, very tight and very logical. There are no great surprises or smart comments or shocking discoveries. It is about a guy who has watched previous heist movies and is now doing one himself. Period. But the movie is directed as if the whole thing was bigger than that, with these angles and shots making you feel that you are about to be dazzled by what you are about to see. But no, it is an intimate, small, cute entertaining movie. Yes, it was a delight to see Jodie Foster play the beautiful manipulating minx, but most anyone in Hollywood could have played that role. Denzel's sidekick is a very well known actor in the UK and was vastly underutilized in this film. Mr Washington was playing the same character he has played in the past what 5 films? In my humble opinion, it was boring to watch him do the same thing. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone.

Hostel (2005)

SPOILERS...Don't waste your time
14 April 2006
When I was 14, my main goal in life was to find soft porn movies like this one. At 34, this movie feels indulgent, sophomoric, silly and boring. The whole 20 minutes in the Netherlands were a soft porn movie. No real story line, no reason, mo nothing. A minute of them in a dutch hostel leaning about this other one would have sufficed. Then the movie goes from soft porn to silly gore. The dutch businessman who was not gay but wanted to be a surgeon, the local community that is running the killing machine business because they have nothing better to do (no real explanation is given about this operation and it is likely that a sequel will happen, god forbid). Then the killing of likable characters (OK, OK, that means that they went against the formula, but everything else was formula, so it was indulgent to kill the likable characters and leave charmless Jay Hernandez alive). All in all, the best part of the movie was the American business man deciding how to kill. he explains the story in that energetic powerful little scene. But it is not worth the time or money.

Not to be missed
17 March 2006
Not to be missed. I had read great reviews about this movie but I was surprised at how fantastic it was. Based on a simple plot, simple political mess, simple characters, this is a thrilling movie, with a thrilling story that rings true to today's Britain, Europe, the US and many countries in LA. I thought some of the performances were better than others, but all in all, a fantastic cast. Loved every minute of it. Don't miss this movie. I am sure they will make it into a Hollywood film with some hunky guy playing the leas (which misses the point) and Anthony Hopkins playing the wannabe prime minister. Don't miss this film before the Hollwywood machine ruins it

This movie has a pedestrian start, with some of the scenes filmed either in a rush or never reaching professional level. By minute 5 or 6, however, it grabs you and won't let you go. The success of this movie is due to two things: the decision by the screenwriter to acknowledge that not much was needed to improve on the original book and the amazing breathtaking performance of the kid from 3rd rock from the sun...The movie is good, the acting is first class, the topic is discussed in a way that is seldom done. Then, why wasn't nominated for more awards? The magic of major PR budgets and unfortunately this movie didn't have that

Waste of time
4 February 2006
Pointless movie. This got to be the stupidest most senseless script I have ever seen. It just doesn't make sense, doesn't grab you. It is ridiculous and sophomoric. I watched this film with 4 friends. I was the last one to realize what a mistake we had made. All my friends were annoyed and bored by the 10th minute. I kept my mind open until the end..well, until the confession scene which has to be the most painful scene I have ever seen in a movie. It is a waste of time. The only good thing about this film is that it lasts 77 minutes. it is impossible to comment on the acting, when the lines, the set up and the whole thing makes no sense. don't watch this film

Hollywood doesn't do this type of movies well...leave it to the Europeans
21 November 2005
Hollywood doesn't do this type of movies well...leave it to the Europeans. Most people from the US can't handle scenes with heavy dialogue that lasts more than 30 seconds. Hollywood knows that and their actors, scripts and film reflect their need to give the market what the market can handle. That is why they do action and comedy movies so well. There are some wonderful dramas, sure, when they rely on grandiose stories and very serious subjects for them (Civil War and WWII and Vietman and any other war they have been involved in). But when it comes to producing movies that explore our deepest fears, thougths, ideas, and doubts, Hollywood should apply comparative advantage and leave it to the Europeans. This movie is an example of why that is the case. I love every single actor in this movie (the Europeans and the ones from the US). But the writing is so "Dr. Phil" or so "7 steps to magnificence" that instead of exploring our inner selves, we are left with one more episode of Oprah, or worse, Sally Jesse Raphael. What a waste of time!

Form more important than function? Spoiler
28 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
In this movie, form is more important that function. We go from one pointless subplot to the other just so that we can see these wonderful and enchanting images of worlds we have never seen. The movie never comes together because the creators (director, etc) are too busy making sure they create beautiful images and scenarios. I don't see it as a poetic anti war movie. The book may do that, but this movie is not about anything. In the UK version it is not clear why Howl gives his heart to calcifer. It is not clear why Howl, knowing all his problems would be solved by putting his heart back in, doesn't do it --hey, the heart was always there! It is not clear why the witch of the waste wanted Howl's heart. And it is not clear why the Sophie's mother all of the sudden appears in the movie in the place where she used to live. What happened to the hat shop that it was empty for them to move back in. Pointless. I hate it when artists think form is more important than communicating with audiences.

Sweet amazing surprise
21 August 2005
I went to see this movie with a friend of mine from India. I was going because of her, expecting to be bored to death. I was wrong! The Rising is one of these movies that are larger, bigger than life. The amazing powerful music sets the tone to a legend of a great folk hero for Indians. The acting, in most cases, was haunting. The cinematography was breathtaking and the songs, and I am not a big fan of people singing and dancing in movies, were magical and helped move the story along. Of course, it was a big history lesson form me (though the producers warn you that some of this is fictionalized), but I have a better understanding of the Indian culture now. I finally get to see Toby Stephens\playing a role that doesn't involve him being mean, a villain or plain evil.

Better if shorter
2 August 2005
Better if shorter Cuban films are always poignant, well written and well acted. This film is all that. If it had been shorter, it would have been a much better film; it could have told the story in a more powerful fashion. Now, I have seen I don't know how many Cuban films dealing\with the same issue. The difference in here is the music: another important character of the story. But at times, the music was more important than the story. The best thing of the film is the lady who plays the wife planning to go to Miami. Her raw performance is riveting. When she speaks to her mom, her voice just crackles and tells a hundred stories in that one moment. Again, wonderful film, but I found myself wanting for it to faster...
