Five Windows (2015)
Unpredictable and Rewarding
The Ultimate Cat-And-Mouse game (Tom and Jerry - cute). The morbid tone and deceptive premise was paired perfectly with the script.
Houdini would have been proud of the trickery (and J.P. Morgan, too).
The film feels like it is personally told to you - very creepy in its use of close-ups and casual monologue. Appropriate for the one-on-one nature of the assassins' rivalry. Great editing and use of angles to convince the audience of the urban setting. The shadow play and use of fog helped make the space seem more cramped - the small world where it is just the two rivals. The twist ending is somewhat difficult to see coming, the use of foreshadowing and puns may have been a little too much for the piece.
An Overall Stroke of Genius!
The Fourth Wall (2014)
A Thought-Provoking Masterpiece!
Although mental work is required to fully understand the film, the reward is completely worth all effort. The Cooper Brothers have created another stroke of genius. The editing was top-notch and the occasional use of dark comedy only added a garnish to the piece. The use of music stood out as a strong element, providing both a mood and a tempo to the film. A tale that seems dark and brooding at first becomes quite beautiful. The only constructive criticism I could possibly provide would regard the tracking shot that introduced the Narrator; which seemed shaky (apologies if shakiness was intentional). Shout-out to Chris (What the Hell?). Go WBHS!
