Beetlejuice (1988)
Wonderful movie
Beetle Juice is a masterpiece, plain and simple. Tim Burton's imagination, I feel, is portrayed wonderfully on the silver screen once again. From when I was a toddler to now, I still appreciate this film greatly, and would even venture to say that it has been, and still is, my favorite movie.
The casting for this movie left nothing to be desired. I really can't picture anyone else playing Lydia Deetz (the estranged goth girl) other than Winona Ryder, or any other character for that matter. Certainly, you might need a darker taste in movies for this one, because it definitely is a bit dark, but not overwhelmingly so. Give it a try!
Dharma & Greg (1997)
Dharma and Greg is wonderful
This remains to be one of my favorite shows. Dharma's optimistic, liberal attitude creates the perfect contrast for her husband, and I'll bet that everyone can relate to SOMETHING in this series. We all have eccentric relatives or friends in our inner or outer circles somewhere, right?
The dialog is also excellent. Even if you're not familiar with the show, you'll probably love the quotes and quips used in this series. Definitely not mediocre innuendos and perverted wordplay, there's actual creativity - which, in this day and age, can be very hard to find.
A Walk to Remember (2002)
Great movie
A Walk To Remember is a very nice movie.
I will start by saying that yes, this is a chick flick. But it's not one of those ditsy blonde films about teenage crushes and all of that, it has a lot more substance than one of those crap-tastic Hilary Duff screen play that's in theaters every single day. Mandy Moore played the role excellently, and so did Shane West - those two were very convincing as a couple.
In addition to being cute and thoughtful, it was also pretty sad. Drama, angst, romance, and character development definitely reared their heads in this film, no doubt about it. My only complaint on the movie was this: it was a bit slow paced. Not excruciatingly slow like Inventing The Abbots or anything, but definitely not an action packed gore fest of sex and violence.
In conclusion, if you haven't seen it -- see it.
Dogma (1999)
Really good
This is one of those flicks you have to watch with an open mind.
Obviously there are going to be some radical Christians who despise this movie. Seriously, take a look at some of the hate mail Dogma received, saying it was blasphemous, an affront to the lord, etc. etc. I disagree. I'm a definite fan of this movie and believe that everyone should own a copy.
So as you may have guessed, there are a lot of ideas on philosophies and religion in this one. Take the time to listen to these ideas, and I guarantee you that you'll get a lot out of watching. It's not propaganda, and even though Dogma is based on Christian mythology, I definitely wouldn't call it bible friendly.
All in all it's a very good movie, I hope you take the time to at least rent it. Besides, even if you aren't up for some religious ideas, at least it has some Jay and Silent Bob, and that's always cool!
Mad Mad House (2004)
Great show
I found this show very enjoyable.
I can't say how seriously I took the alts, because it is after all, TV. However this fact alone didn't stop me from liking the show, and dare I say adding it to my favorite programs list?
I'm crossing my fingers for there to be another season, it was one of the only reality TV shows I could even stand, none the less adore. The contestants were standard Hollywood fodder but the competitions and challenges were a delight to watch them struggle through.
And I don't care who you are, there's no denying this one thing: Don's wardrobe was absolutely lovely!
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Awesome
I love this movie.
Tarentino is a genius. This movie has many twists and turns, and there's something about the way it's shot that you can't tear your eyes from. One thing I noticed was the color usage -- quite a bit of hue for such a macabre film, but for some reason this blended with it perfectly.
Which brings me to my next point: this movie pulled off some tricks that any other flick probably couldn't. For instance, when The Bride was comatose in the hospital bed, they split the screen to show Elle Driver disguising herself as a nurse. That in it's own right was risky, because most flicks who try that tend to butcher the scene. Not the case with Kill Bill. And despite the fact that Elle Driver was preparing to commit murder, the music was oddly a cheerful and uplifting ditty. Fantastic!
That actually happens a lot in this movie. You hear music that you wouldn't normally find fitting for such a scene, but for some reason when it's thrown into the mix, it turns out beautifully. In addition, I am a militant anime hater - and even I enjoyed the segment explaining(Lou's) life, I found it morbidly artistic.
Just as a warning, though, this movie has a lot of gore! If you're squeamish to bloody sword fights and decapitation, you probably shouldn't watch this one of a big screen. Otherwise, enjoy this flick, I know I did!
Practical Magic (1998)
Not bad, see it sometime
I really liked this movie.
The sets were pretty, the acting was great, and the casting choices were definitely well done. It surprises me that so many people here didn't like this flick, I found it very enjoyable.
The only complaint I really have is this: it's a bit slow paced. Practical Magic is one of those movies that has more talk than action, with less smoke and mirrors than one may expect in a movie about magic. However, if you enjoy a good love story with actual substance, I recommend you see it. If intense action scenes and gore are your cup of tea, this one's probably not for you.
Space Mutiny (1988)
Terrible!
Oh my goodness. Where do I begin?
If you're looking for a movie with great special effects, hot chicks, convincing acting, and beautifully manufactured sets complete with just as superb costumes? This movie definitely is NOT for you. It was hilarious, I'll give it that... but that wasn't what they were going for. The dialogue sucked, and the only reason you should even consider watching this flick is if you need something fresh to make fun of.
This movie was used on Mystery Science Theater, which is how I came across it. If anything you should watch that version, it's far more entertaining than this straight up shot of cinema disaster.
