Eye of the Tiger (1986)
A true hidden gem of 80s action!
I was blown away when I first saw Eye of the Tiger! Where had this movie been all my life!?!?
I am an avid fan of the Golden Age of Action in the 1980s but some how missed out on this classic revenge tale with Gary Busey as Vietnam Vet/Ex-Con BUCK MATTHEWS!
Buck battles a motorcycle gang that is running drugs on the outskirts of Buck's small hometown... some great action throughout the movie and anytime you can hear Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" is a good time.
The supporting cast is great with Yaphet Kotto being the standout. Every time Yaphet and his plane appear on screen, James Brown's "Gravity" plays... I miss the 80s!
Manhunt (2023)
Waste of time. Do not watch this. You will regret it
My friend Abdul told me about Manhunt and I wasn't sure I want to be friends with Abdul anymore after watching. Turns out Abdul was playing a joke on me and I played a joke on myself by watching another movie by Franklin Correa.
The acting was atrocious. It made me yearn for some of Steven Seagal's low budget efforts. There is no focus or discipline in the storytelling.
With movies like this where you know these are not professional actors, you hope the action is good. That was not the case, which was such a letdown. Franklin Correa is like the New York version of Braden D. White (and if you get that reference I'm sorry). Correa especially looks like crap, he should just hang it up and stop doing movies.
Cyborg (1989)
It Has Grown On Me
Watching Cyborg back in the day, it was a big disappointment, especially compared to Jean-Claude Van Damme's other movies from that era.
As the years have passed my appreciation for Cyborg has grown. Part of that appreciation is knowing the story behind the movie as Director Albert Pyun cobbled the movie together one weekend after pitching the Cannon execs on his plan to salvage some of the investment they had made on the Spider-Man and the sequel to Masters of the Universe that never materialized.
The crucifixion scene is probably the most memorable and who doesn't love a good final battle in the rain!?!?
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)
An A for Effort
I'll always have a soft spot for this movie.
After Part V, I was totally burned out from the franchise and foolishly missed out on Part VI and Part VII when they were originally released. But when the hype started about Jason Voorhees in The Big Apple, my curiosity could not let me ignore the 8th chapter in the franchise. If Jason could make it there, he could make it anywhere!
Yes, it was more Jason on a cruise ship than it was Jason in Manhattan and the ending is absolutely bizarre, but I still love this movie. There were some memorable kills... looking at you Julius. And I have to give them credit for thinking outside the box and trying something different.
Also it was fun seeing Kelly Hu in her first feature film role.
Extraction Point (2021)
Straight Up Trash Dumpster Juice
What happens when you have no budget and decide to tackle a sci-fi movie. The answer is Extraction Point.
I get having a love of movies and wanting to make them. But there's a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it. This is an example of the wrong way to make a movie.
It would make more sense if this was shot by a group of people in rural Nebraska who were bored, had a dram and just wanted to make a movie, but this was shot in the New York Metropolitan area. If only there were real films shot in NYC that one could attempt to be a part of and learn actual filmmaking. Just because the technology exists that anyone can make a movie and get it on Tubi, doesn't mean it should be abused.
If anyone rated this movie above a 1 (and 1 is being generous), I suspect that they either worked on the movie or are friends with someone who was a part of it.
Iron Eagle (1986)
An 80s Classic - This One's For You Chappy!
Certain movies could only have been a product of the 1980s and Iron Eagle is one of them.
Louis Gossett Jr and Doug Masters bring some real heart to this over the top and improbable story. He may have won the Oscar for An Officer and a Gentleman, but Chappy Sinclair will always be my favorite Louis Gossett Jr role.
Iron Eagle also has an awesome soundtrack, which almost seemed to be a requirement in the 1980s. When Doug hits the line "This one's for you Chappy!" as he hits play on "Gimme Some Lovin" by The Spencer Davis Group.... it gets me every time!!
Plus the movie had the good sense of casting Tim Thomerson!
I revisit Iron Eagle at least once a year and while I know I am in the minority, I actually prefer it over Top Gun.
