Dave Made a Maze (2017)
A joy to watch
I really enjoyed watching this film. Just like the cardboard that makes Dave's maze it's composed of a number of different layers - on the one hand you've got nob jokes and slapstick and on the other, a metaphor for the protagonist's mind and relationships. It made me laugh out loud a number of times and still had me getting for the characters. Yes it's low budget but that adds to the charm - a highly polished Hollywood movie would not have been as good. That said, the set design is great and certainly never looks cheap.
Kung Fury (2015)
Yes, yes, yes yes yes yes yes!
Thirty minutes just isn't long enough!
This is great - it manages to be very very funny by being simultaneously very dumb and very clever (you choose the level you east to enjoy it at).
So many fondly remembered clichés compressed into a half an hour of non-stop laughs.
I seriously hope this gets remade into a full length movie because it's worth it.
The quality of the CGI and production is great - it's just like watching something on VHS (did we really do that? Anyone who had only known DVD doesn't know how lucky they are!).
There are so many great 80s movies referenced in this film - is like revisiting my childhood again.
Quién sabe? (1967)
A beautiful film
This is one of my favourite films. I can't quite say why but it has a more powerful effect on me than most films.
On the one hand the film is blunt and lacking in subtlety - the executions it starts with and Nino's (lack of) reaction, his disdain for Mexico and Mexicans and the dilemma with the captain on the tracks. Maybe the subtlety is lost in translation but it's pretty clear there are points being made.
But then there's the scene where the bandits are massacred and Adelita just leaves when these days you'd expect floods of tears.
The soundtrack obviously deserves a mention particularly the way it's blended into the film a couple of times at the start (guitar player on the train and Chuncho banging his drum).
I'm sure this film should get higher ratings than it does. I wonder if the fact that it's overtly anti-American is responsible for that: if I was American I'd probably feel a bit put out by the end of the film.
