The Best of Me (2014)
What were the makers thinking?
This movie had so much potential but they had to go ruin it with that ending. The first half was beautiful. The story of lost love was captured beautifully and you could actually feel for the characters. Young Dawson Cole could have been casted better. He didn't look like a high schooler. The story is cliché but it's good. The ending, however, not so good. Why did they have to go and ruin a perfect ending. Just after they realized that they need to be together, he dies! What?!! I know that the writers probably didn't want a typical romance movie ending and wanted to take the unconventional path but for this movie, it wasn't the right decision. On top of that, her son get's his heart. Lmao, what?? At this point the movie was just trying too hard to be tragic but too bad we were fed up with the ending by then to feel sad.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
Fun to watch
It's fun to watch and that's about it. The plot is a bit weak and the movie has followed the recipe for the basic fun marvel movie and that's all of it. Although, I loved Tom Hardy as Venom. He's just too good at what he does. The banter between Venom and Eddie is as usual very entertaining. I liked how Dan was involved more in this movie. The humor saves the movie otherwise the plot is not very interesting. They could've developed the story a little bit more. There's nothing extraordinary, it's good for a one time watch. The VFX just like the first movie are great. No complaints there. Rating it 8 as even though the plot is weak, it's still fun to watch.
Venom (2018)
It's a good watch
I don't know why this movie is getting so much hate in the reviews section here, I for one, thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I loved the interactions between Venom and Eddie. They were hilarious. Also, the storyline was also good. I think Tom Hardy did justice to his role and his performance was amazing. Specially, when he was still figuring out what was wrong with him. I didn't think I'll enjoy Venom's character as much as I did. The makers did a good job in humanizing Venom and the way it shipped Eddie and Anne was pretty cute. The VFX were amazing.
I get that people felt it wasn't authentic as many things got censored to get a PG-13 certificate. Would love to see the R-rated version but this one was also a good watch.
Shiddat (2021)
Was not ready for this!!
I don't know what I expected from this film but it definitely wasn't what I saw. I was hooked from the beginning. I knew that it was a love story and that it was something different than what Bollywood is offering these days but I sure as hell wasn't ready for THIS different!! This was a crazy love story that also maintained some realness. The ending wasn't what the audience would have liked but it was the right choice made by the makers. Otherwise, the movie wouldn't seem practical with the lengths that Sunny's character went to for his love, it already was sounding somewhat impractical and if they would have gone for a typical happy ending, it would definitely look like some fantasy movie.
Also, SUNNY KAUSHAL!!! That's it, just Sunny Kaushal. Honestly, I'm a fan. He's the next big superstar. He no doubt carried the whole movie on his shoulders. I loved him in The Forgotten Army and I remember wondering who is he? His acting is perfection and I can't wait to see him in more projects.
Better Call Saul (2015)
No complaints here
Wow! What an end or might I say beginning to the Breaking Bad universe. The characters are so well developed and the writing is top notch. Everything is so perfectly planned and executed that you can't find any flaws in the show.
The only thing that irked me a bit was that the characters looked older than what they looked in Breaking Bad. Although the Better Call Saul team did clarify on this matter that they didn't have the budget to make them look young and also it was more of a creative decision to make them look that way.
Anywho regardless of the appearance of the cast members, I thoroughly enjoyed the show.
When They See Us (2019)
Oh my god the horror!!
Being from a different country and being born in the late 1990s I've never known about such a case. But after seeing this, I was shaken to my core seeing that such things happen in a country like the USA. Being from a third-world country we're always flooded with content from the USA be it news or entertainment all of which glorify the country. But this one truly made me realize that maybe there's not much difference between them and us.
Screwing up the life of 5 children like that and on top of that having no remorse for what they did is shameful. It's one thing to make a mistake and it's another to intentionally weave up a false story just so that the case can be closed. Even after all these years the DAs and the prosecutor still believe that they aren't in the wrong. They should be dragged to court for what they did.
The Director Ava DuVernay perfectly managed to create the tension in the series. Also, the last episode made me so emotional. All the episodes were amazingly well made but the last episode, the last episode was something else.
Comet (2014)
I don't care what anybody says, this movie is a masterpiece
Not giving it a 10 because of its ambiguous ending but hey isn't the whole movie a bit ambiguous. The movie explores the couple's relationship for over 6 years and I believe that some parts were of parallel universes. It is raw and beautiful. Although the chronology is vague and not enough substantial information is provided about their relationship, the movie still manages to be interesting throughout. We have to draw conclusions from their conversations at various stages of their life where they are breaking up.
Casino Royale (2006)
Daniel Craig is my Bond
What a performance!! The opening scene in the bathroom gave me literal chills. I was sold from the first scene of the movie. For me Daniel Craig is the best Bond and no one can replace that.
No Time to Die (2021)
Farewell to the best James Bond
I don't get people hating on this movie, I personally loved it. The movie was long but it didn't feel like it. Maybe I'm just not that big of a James Bond fan to comprehend what went wrong with this movie. The only thing that seemed to not make sense for me was the bionic eye.
The ending did made me emotional. Saying goodbye to my favorite James Bond like that was definitely very sad. Would've loved to see an alternate ending with an epilogue where Bond is happy and finally has a family but it wouldn't be a James Bond movie if that happened.
Steve Jobs (2015)
The name you know, the person you don't
The movie is wonderful and Michael Fassbender does an immaculate job portraying Steve Jobs. The movie is divided into three phases, each phase set for the launch of a new product by Steve at various stages of his life. Most of the movie happens backstage where someone is confronting Steve. Even though most of the movie is set backstage, you can still paint a fairly good picture of what Steve Jobs was like in person and what all was going on in his life.
Kate Winslet as Joanna Hoffman did a wonderful job and the movie is very well made.
Shershaah (2021)
Spectacular
What a great watch! Siddharth Malhotra did an immaculate job portraying Captain Vikram Batra. The whole movie is beautifully made and will hit you right in the feels.
Maqbool (2003)
What a movie!
Filled with talented actors and wonderful screenplay, this movie is an excellent watch. What can I say about Irrfan Khan that hasn't been already said. He is just too good. Vishal Bharadwaj did an incredible screenplay and the movie is definitely worth your time.
Panchayat (2020)
No words
This series is just exceptional. Season 1 was amazing and I didn't think that season 2 would be able to match the standards of season 1 but TVF has done it yet again.
This series will forever have a special place in my heart. It just feels like a warm hug. Because in one way or another we can all relate to Abhishek's character. 'Hum sab bhi kahin na kahin naach hi rahe hain'.
Modern Love Mumbai (2022)
Loved it
Started watching it with zero expectations as I thought the series would be very pretentious and would try to copy the original Modern Love, in turn becoming very 'non-Indian'. But boy did the series exceed my expectations and not just exceeded, but exceeded by a lot. The topics around which each episode revolved were handled with such charm that it didn't feel boring even for a single moment
Having never lived in Mumbai myself, I could still feel the Mumbainess in each episode. My favorites were Raat Rani, Mumbai Dragon, I Love Thane, and Cutting Chai.
Everyone acted amazingly well given that such seasoned actors were a part of this project. Special mention to Ranveer Brar who acted beautifully and might I say outshined Pratik Gandhi. Pratik no doubt is a phenomenal actor but I think his acting in the series felt a bit restrained. I could see through the screen that he was uncomfortable doing some scenes.
Watch the series to see something refreshing.
Chernobyl (2019)
Powerful
The series is very well-paced and soul-stirring. The aftermath of how the situation was handled by the Soviet Union leaves you in shock. The depictions of the utter recklessness and the selfishness to keep everything under the rug so that the image of the Soviet Union remains clean are more haunting than any horror movie.
Divergent (2014)
Good enough for me
I've seen a lot of people criticizing the movie for being a rip off of Hunger Games but I feel the two series are very different from each other. Apart from being dystopian there are very little similarities between the two.
Personally, I liked the movie. It was well-made with good character development.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
Unusual and different
This was something totally different from what mainstream movies have to offer. The movie is the perfect portrayal of a comic book and draws elements from video-games. It is unrealistic but the way it is made makes it really fun to watch.
My Octopus Teacher (2020)
Exceptional
The movie unexpectedly tugged at my heartstrings. Going into watching the documentary I knew that it was about an octopus's journey being recorded by a man who got fascinated by her. But little did I know that I would too get fascinated by her life journey. It is beautiful and emotional. The documentary is special in the way that the host actually formed a meaningful bond with the octopus. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful providing stunning images of the ocean and the creatures living in it.
Good Will Hunting (1997)
Loved the film!
The movie was slow paced but definitely not boring. Usually in slow paced movies I keep on checking the left runtime but I didn't do it even once while watching this particular one.
It showcases the inner struggle of a math prodigy who has trouble forming relationships due to never being loved as a child as he was an orphan and his foster father abused him. This led to him believing that he shouldn't let anyone get close to him as everyone will eventually leave him.
Even though he is a brilliant mathematician he still prefers to live in his small city working as a menial laborer. He is amused to know that his therapist gave up his tickets for the historic game of six of the 1975 world series to see a girl with whom he fell in love at first sight. When the therapist revealed that he doesn't have a slightest bit of regret despite his wife having died of cancer and him having to spent the last years taking care of her. Even though her passing has left him with immense grief, he's still glad that he got to spent all those years with his wife. This struck with Will and decided to make amends in his relationship with his girlfriend.
The movie though predictable is worth the watch.
I, Tonya (2017)
Very well acted and directed
I had no prior knowledge of any such event happening as I wasn't born then and also because I belong from a different country. The movie gave a pretty good insight into the life of Tonya Harding and what all led to "the incident". Now since I wasn't there when the incidents happened so I wouldn't know if the movie portrayed everyone authentically or not. It could very possibly be that the whole truth hasn't been shown or the movie favors Tonya in certain aspects. This could very much be the case but from what I feel, the movie did justice to the characters be it Tonya or Nancy. At first I thought that the bodyguard was intentionally shown to be that stupid but after watching his tape at the end of the movie it became pretty clear that he was actually that daft in real life! It was indeed his stupidity which lead to the incident and further lead to the downward spiral of Tonya's life.
The movie was very well directed, no scene felt unnecessary. The movie didn't feel as if it was being dragged on and on. It was crisp and to the point. The actors did a phenomenal job. Each and everyone in the cast perfectly embodied the characters they were playing, which becomes evident when you see the tapes at the end of the movie. All in all it was an enjoyable watch.
Lost in Translation (2003)
A movie about two people stuck in their marriages
Well! I couldn't say if the two characters are actually stuck in their marriage i.e. Are out of love with their partners or just facing some sense of disconnection with them. Bill Murray's character is going through a midlife crisis whereas Scarlett Johansson's character is feeling detached with her husband besides also feeling unsure about her future. Both of them feel lost in the city of Tokyo as the culture and language is very alien to them. The two strengthen their friendship while bonding over the fact that both of them are experiencing a foreign culture as well as feeling dissociated with their partners. The themes of romance in the movie is definitely not conventional.
For me personally, the movie was quite boring as I couldn't relate with the plot at all. But I'll give it the benefit of doubt as I'm very young and I wouldn't have the experience to understand the nuances of the film. I believe for people in unhappy marriages, this movie would portray their reality and for them it could be a masterpiece, for me, not so much. The movie was very slow paced and I believe it was intended to be that way. Even when the characters were having fun it felt very monotonous to me. It isn't a film for the average audience in my opinion, would like to see it again after10 years to see if my aging has changed my opinion.
Legend (2015)
Good
The movie was interesting throughout. Tom Hardy did an immaculate job playing the twins. The stark difference between the two brothers was portrayed very well by him. It was an enjoyable watch for me. Didn't knew about the Kray twins before but got a pretty good insight about the two gangsters after watching the movie.
Moonlight (2016)
Simple and beautiful
The movie has no extraordinary or over the top elements yet it is beautiful because of it's simplicity. You see the struggle of a person from his childhood to his adulthood. What really blew my mind was the amazing acting of all the cast members. Chiron's character had very less to speak and had mostly to convey his emotions through his expressions and all three actors did a very great job portraying him.
The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
Definitely watch it if you are feeling down
This movie just blew my mind. There are times when this movie just fills you with so many emotions, happiness, sadness , inspiration, respect and what not. It will inspire you to hustle harder everyday and be compassionate towards people because everyone's going through things we know nothing about.
Chintu Ka Birthday (2020)
A very heartwarming movie
The movie is very simple and would definitely strike a chord. The actor's performances are great and Chintu with his innocence steals the show.
