Packed to the Rafters (2008–2013)

I want to be a Rafter
5 June 2022
Nathan never completely stops being a wanker, but the Rafters are otherwise amazingly likable without being too perfect. I love that these seem like normal people dealing with normal life events. They actually live in a modest house, have a modest car, and worry about money, but they aren't some kind of working class cliche either (at least to an American viewer.) If the Rafters lived in my neighborhood, I'd show up on their doorstep and ask them to be my friends, and I think they'd welcome me to the family (okay, maybe they are a little unrealistically nice/naive.)

Zzzzzzz

I would've thought the subject matter alone would have made this interesting, but this is the proof that it can be unbelievably boring. The Netflix tile was the most engaging thing about it. It all goes downhill if you click it though.

Great show, Terrible episode
19 February 2022
The trial seems to consist of the defense barrister asking irrelevant questions that cause these supposedly experienced cops completely fall apart but nobody has much to say about the events surrounding the crime that the defendant is supposedly on trial for.

I so so so want to like this, but I can't do far
24 January 2022
I love the book and have fond memories of watching the pierce brosnan made for tv miniseries as a kid. I think I'm fine with the attempts to bring the story into line with current orthodoxies, include more multidimensional and diverse characters, etc., even if it feels a little forced. The problem is there's no excitement and it's hard to care what happens to the characters, which is quite a feat for something based on such a great story. Hopefully someone will give it another shot in a few more decades, and I'll still be alive to see it. I'm not giving up completely yet but it's getting to be pretty rough going.

Pretty people acting bad and acting badly

Christian Cooke really is pretty though. I can't tell if it was the dialogue or the acting that was the problem of if it was the pretty people who made it feel so soapy but it was pretty bad if somewhat exciting at a couple points.

not terrible but didn't finish
4 October 2019
Not awful, had some funny moments but only made it about two thirds of the way through the movie. Then I gave up. Then I tried to think of something to say to make my review long enough.

I think we've jumped the shark if we hadn't already

A bit of a slow finale by comparison with earlier seasons. We've been left with big teasers for next season but I think maybe the good ideas have run out(?)

Addictive and infuriating
22 September 2019
Lots of plot twists that keep you guessing and make it hard to stop watching. Often this is at the expense of the characters making stupid mistakes or overlooking the obvious. Also a lot of very gratuitous violence.
