Brutal (2006)
9/10
A dark comedy, it was marketed as horror and snuff for no reason at all!
26 August 2016
People sometimes don't get it, a director has no influence on media, when it comes to promoting the movie, if there is no studio or producer behind. He never wrote that the movie was "snuff" or horror, Brutal is a dark tragic comedy about 5 wanna-be criminals and how life sucks in general. How much people suck! The film festival and the magazine that promoted the movie in Greece, mentioned words like snuff and horror, but that was only a small part of their review and promotion, but somehow some people thought that it was such a movie, and they judged it in that context. There were even people who wrote bad stuff because the viewers during the first official screening were laughing a lot- YEAH IT IS A COMEDY!

The movie had a lot of haters somehow, who had no idea why this was so different and why it had some success. The preparation for this movie was long and what looks like natural amateur actors, are actors who really tried their best to become the parts. For about three months before the first shooting, the director together with the three main actors were trying a number of dangerous techniques to find ways to let themselves loose during filming. That is what looks so authentic inside and the reason some claim there is no direction or acting. The actors were surprised, because they didn't know what would happen next, if they would get insulted or hurt, it was all part of the process they agreed to be involved into, and it shows.

There are moments in Brutal that capture the reality of wanna-be criminals, they don't look like cinematic villains, they are real and sometimes far more dangerous than the fake bombastic criminals in movies, who have clever things to say and always stay cool. Brutal is realistic in terms of film-making and as a story. It is funny because it's real and has no filters. The movie doesn't expect you to like it, it doesn't give you a good time, you will not enjoy your popcorn, but that was the experiment and the exercise, how to create something anti-cinematic.

I agree that the camera technique was mixed and it was not always necessary to be shaky. This helped to create a hype and that is why some used to call it found footage or snuff. It is interesting if you see it as a hybrid between genres that don't mix. They called it road movie like an American one from the 70's, indeed it has similar moments. Neo-noir was the best term, because of the structure inside the movie, it starts with long talks, it builds up and it gets to the brutal final act. Someone mentioned that the action and the horror look like they jumped out of cartoon shows, which is true. It gets closer to EVIL DEAD when it comes to violence, but Brutal doesn't try to shock or scare. The language is one of the heaviest in Greek cinema, with a huge number of swear words and slang that nobody uses in movies, it is the real deal, and this is the only thing that shocked the audience when the movie first screened. It was more than expected and it went really far, the people on screen are talking about extreme stuff and make fun of them, like everyday people do.

Brutal is politically correct and incorrect at the same time. Don't get fooled thinking that this was amateurish, the script was originally 96 pages long, but no actor has read more than 5 intentionally. The director plays the main villain, for guiding and directing the other actors live on set. There was no real improvisation though, it was all part of the script. In the end, Brutal is a whole film school compressed in 90 minutes, success, failures, mistakes, greatness, everything is accepted and helps, if you try something different. You can write any critique good or bad, but you have to understand that this movie was made with nothing but one single camcorder, no lights, no crew and the director was part of the action in almost the entire movie. No extra cameraman, no special effects artist, this is exactly what people shoot with their cell phones or what they shoot in concerts, but somehow this turned into a movie that screened in theaters and has some deep meaning about what the stupid human nature is and how close we are to animals and beasts.

Razor (2007 Video)
9/10
Finally a Director's CUT that replaces the boring bootleg version of 2010
24 August 2016
Very funny (especially for Horror fans), the movie plays with all the standard clichés that can be found in slasher thriller classics, especially in the European ones like Bloody Moon from the early 80's, movies like Kolobos, Halloween, Friday The 13th and The Toolbox Murders. The killer in Razor uses some very unorthodox methods for torturing his victims before killing them, including a variety of tools like a razor blade, a saw, a whip and even a dildo! The dildo is probably the most unique item ever used in a slasher movie.

The movie includes some cheesy dialogue and although it was shot in English, it was later dubbed in English by the same actors for a different sterilized sound that feels fake. One actress is talking in German through the entire movie, and somehow the killer actually responds to her in German as well.

The Special Effects are a huge part in Razor. The props were created by Alahouzos Bros (George and Roulis Alahouzos (http://www.alahouzosfx.com/), one of the few SFX experts in Greece. The applications were done by MacabroFX crew on the spot with the help of another make-up artist. Some of the FX were really complicated and dangerous, especially because of the real electric saw that was used and its reaction to foam and latex, which was unpredictable. A scene involving a male's genitalia was one of the most expensive ones, because there is no easy way to make a mold out of the specific area. The scene is probably the most notorious one in the movie, together with a reference scene to Lucio Fulci's New York Ripper.

The movie is finally out in its original intended form, as a slasher comedy with a lot of gore and crazy disturbing situations, while there are many moments that are finally funny, as was the original intention of the director. A co-producer in 2007 who wanted a serious slasher for the US market and a distributor in Greece in 2008 are the ones who ruined this movie back then, while the director and producer tried to satisfy their demands. The movie never got a proper release back then, because it was messy and it couldn't serve as a serious thriller, but also could not satisfy as a comedy. The mistakes are now corrected and although it runs at 75 minutes, it is fully uncut and cool.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Virus Outbreak
5 August 2016
This movie is a perfect hybrid of horror genres, it has all those elements of a road movie, a typical slasher with a deranged family, but also includes elements of a Virus Outbreak - Zombie Apocalypse style movie and also the unexpected elements of delusion and nightmare-turned-into-reality. No matter what, you will definitely enjoy it and you will get sucked deep into the movie's world. The characters deliver a straight realistic performance, covered in dirt and blood in real sets, there are no props, every single piece that was destroyed in this movie (television, sink, furniture) is real. This is a small snack before watching any good horror movie, it will get you in the mood, it will make you think and it will become one of your favorite short movies of all time!

The movie was shot during the summer of 2007 and the original intention was to create a Texas Chan Saw Massacre style low budget little movie that would showcase a very realistic redneck danger situation for a beautiful girl who gets lost in the fields. The set was perfect and it was truly scary and adventurous for all the actors and crew members, especially after dark. No electricity and no soul for miles. The set was filled with real pig heads and other parts, that due to the heat (about 40 ºC or 104 ºF) quickly attracted all types of insects and made the cabin genuinely disgusting as hell. There was a 72-min. Work- print available for a while, due to a sales agent who wanted a longer version, but this movie was originally shot as a SHORT MOVIE and with 26 min. running time, it doesn't miss any of the horrors or the action.

Red Like Blood (2005 Video)

What is so different with this movie and why you should watch it...
4 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The movie took 2 years to shoot between 2003 and 2005, with some additional scenes in 2006. It was a movie project that started in 1999, but was never easy to take off the ground, because of the fact that it isn't the standard script or the typical movie. The idea behind it, was to find a way to re-create professional video footage by someone who has no idea of movies, he is just in love with his camera, he shoots anything for anyone just for the fun of it and he doesn't care about the shots that much, because he thinks he is a good editor. Trying to get into that guy's shoes, while trying your best as a film-maker creates a conflict. You try to stay focused and to imitate the common mistakes you see in other's people's videos, which is what you actually avoid as a film-maker.

The second great challenge was the actors. The first attempts were a failure and the lead female part of the reporter was given to two other actresses at first. After a number of screen tests, the first scene was shot with the one actress in full. The video footage still exists. It was clear that something was missing. So, the director went with his next choice and re-shot the full scene. That was it! She was perfect for the role. She understood the concept of being natural and authentic, she tried her best to get rid of any theater knowledge and experience, that always looks fake in movies. She was very involved until the end of the movie and she took important lessons about a different type of acting, very close to method acting, but totally dangerous for others.

The scenes of this movies were well planed, but the whole approach almost produced lethal accidents on set. The first story was smooth and the director took advantage of the fact that those two actors were in their first year of acting school and always over-acted. It was so perfect for a story that had to look fake. The reporter in the story supposedly had the brilliant idea to shoot it like it was happening in real time, she appeared inside the house out of nowhere and interviewed them, while they were still "fighting". The whole concept is actually a spoof of the countless stupid reality shows, where everyone is talking to the camera about emotions and how they have felt at that particular moment. The "murder" went well, and the reporter wanted to make a great exit, as if she had captured a real crime on tape.

The second story was problematic. The actress was great, but nobody knew, she hadn't show how far she could go. The male actor wasn't good at all, so as part of the "fake" style of the story, the shooting was going great. Until the actress had to cry. She stopped speaking to the crew and the other actors, she cried her guts out and couldn't even breathe. She stayed in the role and went to the kitchen, she grabbed a real knife, almost cut herself badly and then she went to the guy's room. The director was shocked and took the risk instead of stopping the shooting. He asked from the actor to turn his back against the camera, so that he wouldn't see her face. The actress didn't act anymore, it was scary. She almost stabbed the guy twice for real and he had no idea what was going on, thinking everything was still OK.

Everything else went fine as planed until the final story. There are three girls inside the room. The one who starts the fight was an actress and was working in the Theater, while the other one had never acted in front of the camera, but was singing on stage from time to time. The shooting stopped after an hour, cause the "singer" lost her mind, she was shaking and was throwing stuff, she even managed to throw a bunch of keys to the refrigerator so hard, that the metal door almost broke in half. Nobody was sure if it was healthy to keep shooting. The word CUT was never heard on set, and that is one thing that cause actors to lose their control, to forget that the camera was there and to become really angry and vicious. So, this is somehow the closest you can get to a real found footage material. The moment in the end almost send everyone to jail, but the actress recovered and didn't press charges, the hit was real and if the brain was shattered she could end up dead.
