The Old Man: V (2022)
Wow! What happened?
This episode was very heavy on dialogue and no action to speak of. I have no problem with lots of talking but the whole episode was like some therapy session and I for one (and my wife) found it to be rather ridiculous after awhile. The plot was advanced hardly at all. We both groaned when, once again, the woman that's essentially been kidnapped by Dan Chase starts up with all these questions about his character. In a nutshell, we really don't know enough about any of these people to really care about them. The actors are trying hard but in this episode the writers (and director?) failed them. I'm hoping that things will get better, and I'm willing to keep watching, but this show, which had a 7 rating from me before tonight's episode has dipped down to a 5.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Great Art, not entertainment
OK, so not long into this movie I thought, "there's going to be a lot of people who don't really get this movie." People who want fast-moving action, an obvious plot, and lots of dialogue are going to find this movie boring and slow. Those people are entitled to their opinion. In my opinion this movie is a genuine work of art. The cinematography, the score, the deliciously slow pace, and the terrific acting all add up to a marvelous movie. It's the kind of picture that you keep thinking about long after it's over.
Midsommar (2019)
Quit wanting to be scared and pay attention!
I am amazed at all the one star reviews. Having seen Hereditary (truly horrifying) I wasn't sure I wanted to see Midsommer but I'm very glad I did. Many of the one star reviews say that there is no narrative but they obviously weren't paying attention because here it is, or at least one of the main narratives: girl loses her family, she will do anything to please her boyfriend who secretly wants to split up with her, they take a trip, she finds a family, becomes empowered and chucks the boyfriend. Florence Pugh is amazing in this film. She along with the cinematography, the fantastic music and the slow creeping sense of dread really carry this movie. Is it slow? Yes. Does it need to make sense? No, It's a horrifying fairytale. I think some people get tripped up because they think they're going to watch a horror movie. It's a disservice to this film to call it a horror movie. It's a disturbing, cathartic fairytale with horrific aspects. As always, the reviews say more about the reviewer than what's being reviewed.
Murder Among the Mormons (2021)
Slow paced, wrong focus
This documentary could have been done in two episodes or done in three episodes and include more historical context. The pace was painfully slow, especially in the 2nd and 3rd episodes. Also, I really object to the series of pics of Mark Hofmann at the end of the documentary: he's not a hero, he's a psychopath and displaying images of him like that seems to me to be admiring him. Big mistake.
The Handmaid's Tale: Night (2019)
Wrong music, too slow
This show is, overall, really really good but the music during the burning was jarring and the episode was really slow. I hope the writing and direction improve in that we see that June isn't just going crazy but actually has a plan. I sincerely hope this show doesn't go off the rails like GOT did.
