The Invention of Lying (2009)
Truly dismal
Awful film. Ricky Gervais plays himself in a romcom that's pretty much all rom and no com, in fact more of a con. A storyline that's been told in any number ways, only much better (e.g. Liar! Liar! And Yes Man), which is just a vehicle for Ricky Gervais's middle-of-the-road feelgood superficiality. As predictable as day following night and as full of surprises as reciting the alphabet. I'll never get this 100 minutes back again.
Gervais us stub-nosed and chubby - NSS! - and that and being a loser make him not eligible for dating. But, lying suddenly makes him rich and famous (Well, that bit may be true!). Then, the film lumbers to the inevitable happy ending.
Dire.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Love it!
As a big fan of 80s horror films, I didn't get that this was a parody until about episode 4, because the plot lines as exactly the same as those in 'serious' horror films! Great fun, tongue in cheek, all the clichés and plot twists. Not as blatant as the Airplane! Series, which I also love...
Brilliant!
After Life: Episode #3.3 (2022)
Hilarious!
Some hilarious meets, grumpiness from Tony The Curmudgeon and swearing. Brilliant! Two-and-a-half series in and the concept of someone saying what you (well, certainly what I) really think about people, is still compulsive viewing.
I'm not a fan of Rocky Gervaus's shows, but this is laugh-out-loud funny!
Toc Toc (2017)
Hilarious!
I thought that the plot looked interesting, but the film excelled my expectations. Brilliantly funny!
Public Eye: The Comedian's Graveyard (1969)
Classic
A fine episode from a classic series. Very much of its time and from an era when quiet, cheaply filmed well-written and well-acted series could actually make it to the screen. Alfred Burke as Marker is as dour as ever and the outcome of his enquiries is never fully satisfactory.
This episode revolves around a missing teenager (Tessa Wyatt, the future Mrs (Tony) Blackburn, incredibly enough playing a character called Judy Blackburn!) and a music hall comedian (hence the title of the episode).
Dated, but shows how good TV can be, when it relies on quality and not gimmicky.
Beck: Levande begravd (2009)
Excellent!
26th episode out of 30 is a little late to start watching a series, but that's how I got here!
Brilliant suspense, with motifs from the horror genre, but in keeping with the storyline. Well-acted and well-written, with at least a couple of moments of genuine shock.
I enjoyed it immensely and will now watch the remaining episodes that I have recorded!
There are a number of plot twists and it ain't over, 'til it's over! I've read that this is different from the other films in the series, but we'll see!
