surprisingly good...

features several faces that have gone on to mini-major fame (one of the new Pirates of the Caribbean, for example, and the actress who played "Poppy" Fresh on the WB's cult hit Popular), and cameron diaz in a role she was built to play ... a pre- and during-fame, starlet with random poetic aspirations.

nothing in the film is exactly spectacular or revelatory, but at the same time it is a curious oddity for fans of independent, art, and student films. i wiled away an afternoon with a friends' copy of this with absolutely no regret and genuinely enjoyed the look and feel of it.

The Most Moving American Film of the New Century
18 December 2005
I don't hand out 10s. I don't. I love a lot of movies and still respect that they are not as great outside of my head as they are inside of it. Reality v. perception, if you will.

Well the reality and my perception of this film are, I'm almost entirely certain, on the exact same wavelength, which is: Ang Lee and the writers and this extraordinary cast have creating the most stirring, relevant, beautiful, romantic film that I can remember seeing. It is epic in its smallness; as much a watershed mainstream film as it is a watershed gay-niche film.

This is a film that everyone should see. There is not a pair of eyes in this country -- straight, liberal, Pakistani, white, conservative, 15, 97, gay, bored, lonely, Korean, Australian, atheist, pious, and on and on -- who would not benefit from seeing it.

Thank you to the filmmakers and the actors for this... I couldn't have asked for a better film to cap off this year.
