Pharma Bro (2021)
Uninspired
There was no shortage of material for the filmmaker to create an incisive and interesting film. This movie really missed the mark. It was all over the place and offered no original insight into the psyche of the pharma bro. This movie will probably be well received by younger audiences who yearn for content that confirms their preexisting beliefs. This documentary is about as clever and interesting as late night tv in 2021.
White Chicks (2004)
Just sit back, relax and enjoy
This is movie is not, nor does it purport to be, a thought-provoking film. This movie is not a critique of race in America, and there is hardly anything that even approaches controversial. Nevertheless, there are some very funny scenes and it is definitely worth a watch. The movie is a lot funnier if you just accept the premise and go with the flow. The writers are clearly in on the joke.
True Story (2015)
What is in a Name?
**possible spoiler**
True Story is about a recently discredited journalist, Mike Frankel, who learns his name was used as an alias by Christian Longo, a man accused of killing his wife and three children. Thinking this could be just the break he needed, Frankel contacts Longo. Frankel finds that him and Longo share much more in common than the name. For instance, they both doodle on paper, and both have a mutual, but unsurprising distrust for one another. Frankel soon finds what initially seemed to be an open and shut case IS actually in fact an open and shut case. Longo is clearly guilty, and there is nothing extraordinary or particularly interesting about the trial. No gray areas, no reasonable doubt, just your garden variety defendant lying through his teeth. Still desperate to revive his career, Frankel must create a story out of thin air. He chooses to go the "emotional connection" route, most likely because it is impossible to disprove someone's feelings. During his brief meetings with Longo at the country jail, Frankel would write he developed an affinity towards Longo. Even though Longo constantly lied to Frankel, and was responsible for the death of his wife and three young children, he chose to use Frankel's name while on the lam, and that simple truth forged a bond between these two men that transcended rationality. It would be impossible for anyone who is not named Mike Frankel to comprehend the depth of their friendship. Frankel's ability to create a story when there is absolutely no story to be told is a true credit to his literary genius.
