Get Big (2017)
Not great, but not as bad as a lot of people say
I was browsing Hulu trying to find something that could catch my eye, and this did. At some point before I was even finished with it, I wanted to look up some reviews because I wasn't entirely sure how to feel about the movie and wanted to see what other people thought
To my surprise, I saw that a lot of people said the acting was bad, which is actually the main thing I think this movie did very well. All of the conversations between characters sounded believable, and Alec and Nate reminded me a lot of me and my friend when we were in highschool. There wasn't a point where I thought the acting was bad at all, it all seemed very real
But to me, I think the weak aspect of the movie was the plot. It was very basic, cliché and predictable. A couple of old highschool friends (one who has matured a bit since highschool, and one who hasn't) do some drugs, run into a crazy former classmate, and meet some hot babes on their trip to go to an wedding for someone they hung out with in highschool. While very simple, the movie was still entertaining enough to get me to the end
The movie's categorized as a comedy, but I only laughed maybe twice throughout it. Comedy definitely isn't what kept me hooked, instead I was just interested in where the story would go (which wasn't much of anywhere overall). I think this is because it uses a lot of stoner humor, something I've seen way too much of over the years and it's just gotten stale at this point
One thing I really don't understand is the weird, unexpected 4th wall break at the end. When the subtitle popped up, saying "blah blah blah until the wedding", I actually teared up a bit because of how well-done and unexpected it was, it was an adorable moment. And then equally as unexpected, Nate suddenly acknowledged the subtitle and says he's not ready to get married in a couple years, causing Amy to immediately hate him and storm away, and ruining the moment from before. I'm really not sure why they decided to do this. It was shocking, which I'm sure is what was intended by it, but it was totally unnecessary and I feel like "aww" feeling was way better than the "WTF" feeling
But overall the movie wasn't awful, but it definitely won't be remembered by many since it doesn't do anything special. I probably would have given it less than 6 stars, but like I said the acting was pretty good in my opinion, despite a lot of people on here saying it was trash, and it was also entertaining enough to not make me hate myself for wasting my time on it. If you're looking for movies on Hulu, can't find anything good to watch, and you haven't seen this, I'd say give it a shot. But it's definitely not a must-see.
What Went Down (2014)
Narrator totally ruins it
I went into watching this thinking it was gonna be really entertaining, because shows like Tosh.0 and Ridiculousness are hilarious because I love watching fails
What Went Down is SORT OF like those shows, except the narrator is INSANELY annoying. He makes terrible puns throughout the entire episode, constantly cuts back to other clips that they showed earlier that have lost their humor because they show it so much, and makes really stupid jokes the entire time, a lot of which aren't really even relevant to the clip being shown
Plus he does all of this while talking over the good parts of the clips, like when the guys' friends that got hurt are laughing their asses off and the guy that got hurt is screaming, which is one of my favorite parts
While I really dislike the narrator, I do enjoy the clips they show, so I've got to give them that. If the narrator wouldn't talk as much as he does, then this would be a pretty watchable show
Family Guy (1999)
USED to be Seth MacFarlane's greatest work, but it's gone significantly downhill
Family Guy used to provide intelligent satire and comedy, but now it's all irrelevant cutaways and fart jokes. Literally every episode after about Season 7 or 8 is mostly cutaways that have nothing to do with the plot of the episode, and often aren't even funny for that reason
And about some of the characters, some of them have changed, not all of them for the better. For example, Brian used to keep his mouth shut in the early, early episodes and usually only provide intelligent comebacks to things people said to kinda balance smartness with stupidity (usually Peter), but now he shoves his views and beliefs down everyone's throats and tries to control everyone's lives
It's the same with Chris. I've always liked Chris's character because he's pretty funny, but he just doesn't make any sense, and I'm talking about the way his character is developed now. Most of the time he's dumb as a whole box of rocks, but sometimes he provides people with complicated, intelligent information and facts when they need it? That doesn't make much sense
Family Guy used to be hilarious, but I hate what it's turning into. Fart jokes and irrelevant cutaways. But I guess great TV shows just have to die sometime. Family Guy had its time, but it can't live forever
