Keep It Up
25 September 2019
When many of us wanted a revival of Teen Titans, I doubt a crossover movie with Teen Titans Go was something we wanted. Just like with Teen Titans Go To The Movies, expectations can be turned on our heads. This movie is very funny, with a nice amount of action and both teams portrayed respectfully. A nice solid message on teamwork helps make the movie great.

It's good, even if not what we asked for
4 September 2019
As a direct sequel to Scooby Doo On Zombie Island, it doesn't work. As a Scooby movie on its own, it's amazing. There's a lot of callbacks to various Scooby projects, and it's just plain fun to watch. I would've made a different commemoration for Scooby Doo's 50th anniversary, but I still think it does the job.

Trying Too Hard
4 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Yeah, I'm not a fan of this season finale. The dark and edgy is laid on so thickly that it feels like some poorly written emo fan fiction . The twist of Cassandra becoming evil should not have been saved for the end of the episode. It makes the whole thing pointless. Rapunzel doesn't develop at all, and yet the angst supposedly makes her a more complex character. I felt for Eugene, and the twist with his father is good, but his plot should have been given more time to breathe. This is just terrible.

He's Lost All Talent

Warning: Spoilers
I could write a whole blog on how bad this "short" is, but I'll keep it simple:

1. Animation that's too over the top

2. Shaky camera angles

3. Flat and unlikable and annoying characters

4. Its 80% filler

5. Shoddy CGI and bland backgrounds

6. Trying too hard to be shocking

This Is Terrible
7 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
My feelings on the show are rather mixed. It has plenty of good elements, but plenty of bad moments. This is one of those moments. I could write a thesis paper on why the finale was terrible, but I'll just sum it up with a few phrases:

1. Too short; it needed to at least be 45 minutes

2. 90% of the characters are annoying, unlikable, pathetic , and/or underdeveloped

3. Unfortunate implications with Star committing mass genocide by killing magic

I'm not satisfied with how the show ended. I'm satisfied that it ended. This is just terrible.

A Movie For Fans And Newcomers
17 February 2019
To end this on a positive note, let me address the negatives. Its plot is not too original, and the effects could be better. Outside of that, its pretty good. The cast is all likable and charming, and the action is still intense. It definitely speaks to the teen in us on how we can set out to do what we dream of, and make a difference. Its not for everyone, but this is still a noble effort.

This Movie Is Amazing
29 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So, here we have the big, epic for the Marvel Rising franchise, "Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors". How does it hold up? Let's talk about. The movie starts with Kamala and Doreen hanging out in the park when they come across someone named Victor chasing Dante, who's been wreaking havoc with his fire powers. It turns out that this is the latest in a line of Inhuman related collateral damage when the Terogen wave hit. As they try to investigate what's going on, Kamala ends up being abducted and sent to outer space by Hala the Kree accuser, and now Doreen must rescue her alongside Daisy Johnson, Patriot, Dante, America Chavez, and Captain Marvel.

The unifying theme for the movie is about rising above adversity and unlocking your potential to be a true hero no matter what. Given how this is a character driven movie, let's talk about individual characters and various dynamics explored.

1. Let's start with Kamala Khan and Doreen Green, aka Miss Marvel and Squirrel Girl. One of the major plot points of the movie is about their friendship, the conflicts they face, and how they're different yet similar. Miss Marvel is established to be a very wholesome person, someone who wants to see the best in others and do what she can to reach out to those in need. She does have her own personal baggage though, such as how she's seen as an awkward geek, how her mother is overly critical of her to be a success, and is seen someone of lesser worth due to her status as an Inhuman. Doreen is very different. She's shown as being too devoted to the heroic cause to the point of being impulsive and quick to judge anyone who acts too much out of the ordinary. She even accidentally uses the Inhuman slur against Kamala. Wow! What makes their dynamic work is the intention. Kamala likes seeing the best in others, but focuses too much on reaching out primarily through heart. Doreen is impulsive, but you can tell it's just for a defense since she has the heart of a hero, but acts more on gut instinct. It also helps that they do regret fighting with each other after the abduction.

2. Now I will talk about Daisy Johnson and Rayshaun Lucas, aka Quake and Patriot. Both are seen as just wanting to be special, but both go about it in different ways. It turns out that Daisy has powers of her own, and she's been hiding them from Patriot since she wants to be respected as an agent of SHIELD. Patriot wants to be seen as his own hero without being compared to Captain America, who's much older and wiser and calmer. What really helps sell their dynamic is the sense of vulnerability. Daisy is shown as very strict with what she does to the point of snappishness , yet also able to show compassion when she senses something isn't right. Patriot has the same moral values as his idol, but with more of a willingness to push forward and defy authority when given the chance.

3. Now let's talk about Dante. He was once just a normal person, until the Terogen wave gave him fire powers, and he accidentally burned his parents' house down, and eventually them. He's shown as hot headed and impulsive due to not wanting to be seen as a freak. That's pretty sad. What helps his case is that he's simply acting out of desperation, and at least tries minimal using collateral damage.

4. Let's look at America Chavez. She's hot headed and no nonsense, generally wanting to be left alone and literally flying away when she feels like it. However, her backstory is tragic. She looked up to her two mothers as heroes, but was heartbroken when they sacrificed themselves to save her when their planet was being destroyed. Another wow! It also helps that, though not as determined to stop collateral damage, at least just wants make sure others are safe.

5. Though she only appears for about 20 minutes, Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, stands out. Kamala looks up to her due to her cool head and ability to act on the fly. Even with her slight cockiness, this holds water since she's commanding yet also knows how to let others work in their own.

Now let's talk about our villains, Victor/Exile and Hala. Victor sees Inhumans as rather scummy even though he himself is an Inhuman, and thinks of humanity in general as a subspecies. He also initially passes him as a nice guy before revealing his true colors. However, he sees Hala as a type of mother figure, and just wants to please her. That's pretty sad. As for Hala herself, she manages to be dangerous, yet also rather complex. She kidnaps Inhumans to be part of her army in order to unlock their true potential as heroes given how humans see them as second rate. That's pretty deep. You can see this in action when she chastises Victor for failing her.

Now let's talk about the ending. Victor rejects redemption, but is still a conflicting figure, while Hala is thrown out the air lock. Kamala manages to work with everyone to free the Inhumans and save them from perishing. They, under Captain Marvel's advice, then decide to form their own team, the titular Secret Warriors.

This movie has everything you can ask for: interesting and likable characters, sleek action, witty humor, and a very thought provoking message. I look forward to see what's in store.

This Movie Is Amazing
29 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Well, it's time to grab your scuba gear, and dive underwater for another DC Superhero Girls adventure. This is "DC Superhero Girls: Legends Of Atlantis". Let's begin.

The movie starts with the discovery of The Book Of Legends, a powerful book with dark magic. When the girls lock it away, Mera and Siren steal it from them in order to take over Atlantis from Aquaman. The girls then try to go underwater to stop them and keep the surface world from flooding. This movie packs in quite a lot in just 75 minutes, yet it manages to tie itself well with a moral on being able to overcome your personal issues and rise to true courage and heroism. Let's talk about the four major character arcs in this movie.

Wonder Woman's story: Oh man, is Wonder Woman sympathetic here. Let me explain. When she was a child, she met up with Mera and Siren when playing on the beach, and almost died when she was dragged underwater and attacked by sea monsters. Since then, she's had a crippling fear of the sea monsters, essentially being traumatized. Wow! That's pretty tragic. She's more impulsive and snappish due to her struggles in trying to lead the team to save the team. What really helps her case is her altruism shining through. She maintains the innate desire to do good while also making sure no one gets hurt or almost sacrifices themselves to help her out. It also helps that she at least feels like she doesn't want to be a hindrance to the mission.

Mera and Siren's story: Now let's talk about the sisters Mera and Siren. Since they were young, they've been orphans, and just want to be able to get by in life and survive. How they go about it is where they differ. Mera doesn't actually want to do anything bad. She just wants to be part of a good home, and actively goes out of her way to minimize collateral damage, and even save people when she can, as shown in the flashback where she saved Wonder Woman, but left before she woke up. Siren, on the other hand, is more vindictive. Although she's also sympathetic, she goes way too far in her endeavors, wanting her sister to stay onboard with her and getting less tolerant of her goodness, and resorting to conquering Atlantis and locking away her sister. She does still have a FreudianExcuse of not wanting to be stepped on, but Mera is still more sympathetic since she actively tries to do the right thing, but doesn't have the spine to stand up for herself.

Harley and Raven's story: Now let's talk about Harley and Raven's plot. When locking away The Book Of Legends, Raven accidentally swaps Batgirl and SuperGirl's powers (which I elaborate on below), and is too hesitant to use her magic when it goes haywire, and closes herself off to protect others. Harley tries to cheer her up and make her more proactive. So, we have a nice "opposites attract" vibe where both Harley and Raven are pretty likable. Harley is trying to do what she can to help Raven open herself more to others, while Raven doesn't want to be seen as a weak link in the school's sturdy chain. It helps that Raven is still learning more about who she is, while Harley at least has respect for her privacy.

Batgirl and Supergirl's story: As mentioned above, Raven accidentally swaps their powers. Batgirl becomes rather impulsive with her newfound powers, while SuperGirl is a bonafide geek with her new intelligence. They naturally struggle, but it works with their characters. Batgirl is no slouch in a fight, but she's more tech based in combat. While SuperGirl isn't dumb, she is more reliant on using brute strength in a battle. The undying support they have for each other is rather admirable.

So, how does everything end? Well, it starts with Harley restoring Raven's confidence when she shows her how much others need her, and she successfully turns Batgirl and SuperGirl back to normal. Batgirl then hatches a foolproof plan taking advantage of the general area. It then cuts to Mera using her cunning to trick Siren, while she and Wonder Woman work together to finish her off and restore power. The girls are honored as heroes of Atlantis, and Siren is banished, with Mera feeling bad for her. Add in some slick action and straight up fun humor, and you have an enjoyable movie.

DC Super Hero Girls (2015–2018)
10/10
Fantastic Series
3 June 2016
I've never had a problem with the idea of kid centric superhero since most of them are presented in a way that kids can understand and relate to while still having an appeal to everyone, like with DC Superhero Girls. The show centers on various DC Comics characters attending Super Hero High, which is run by Amanda Waller. The show focuses on seven main characters: Wonder Woman (Grey DeLisle Griffin), Super Girl (Anais Fairweather), Bat Girl (Mae Whitman), Bumblebee (Teala Dunn), Harley Quinn (Tara Strong), Poison Ivy (Tara Strong), and Katana (Stephanie Sheh). To end this review on a positive note, I want to get the flaws out of the way.

1. Some of the season 1 shorts (not counting the hero of the month ones) were a bit too short. Thankfully, it's more consistent in season 2, with the shorts regularly being 2.5 minutes long, the hero of the month shorts are 1.5 minutes, and the special ones are 3.5-4 minutes long.

2. Katana is underutilized, even in season 2, but is still likable.

Now for the positives.

1. The humor is quite clever due to its wide appeal.

2. The characters feel like themselves. They're just in comedic situations. Harley and Ivy being heroes doesn't bother me since this show is its own continuity and they still have some things in common with their comic counterparts. Plus, even with Katana underutilized, everyone gets a chance to shine.

3. The core message of the series is about the different ways everyone can be a hero, which is a good message for kids and adults.

4. The show has shown remarkable improvements over the past few months, essentially listening to the critics and trying to fix its mistakes, unlike say Teen Titans Go.

The show is flawed, but still well written. Because of the improvements, I give it a perfect score.

I Love This!
11 December 2015
The Lion King is one of the best Disney films ever, and the sequels aren't that bad. I was excited when I heard about this movie and the upcoming TV show coming out on January 15, 2016, and I really loved it. While it contradicts some stuff, I can look past it since it still stands on it pretty well. The movie follows Kion, the son of Simba and Nala and the younger daughter of Kiara, as he assembles the Lion Guard to protect the Pridelands. The stuff that's contradicted is fairly minor, and the film is otherwise faithful to the source material. I really like Kion in that he's slightly mischievous, but still well meaning. We also some spotlight for the other characters. I really like the themes presented on being a leader and being a good person, and it's tied together with Disney charm. I highly recommend this one.

Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! (2015–2018)

Flawed, But Still Good
20 October 2015
People were admittedly skeptical about this show because of the artwork and the promos, and while the show has faults, I think it's genuinely good. This show is about the gang (Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby) going on a road trip together when school is over. They encounter lots of monsters and ghosts, and have to figure out who's behind it. There's never been a Scooby Doo series I don't like, and this show is no exception. While the humor can be perfected a bit, each episode has me laughing a lot. The gang is still themselves though. Yes, Daphne is a bit dumbed down, but she's still funny and helpful, and her gimmicks don't overstay their welcome. The show has a nice Phineas And Ferb vibe to it, though that might be due to Jon Colton Barry and Zac Moncrief. If you look past the weird art, I say give it a shot.

Lots Of Fun
15 October 2015
Inspector Gadget is certainly an interesting franchise. The idea of a bumbling agent who can barely do a good job could be tiring, but the idea works considering it spawned at least 3 shows. I don't remember much from the original shows, so I can't compare. As for this show, it's a lot of fun. The show is focused primarily on comedy, and it succeeds in that regard since each episode is super funny. Of course, there is still some semblance of a story. Despite the title, the protagonist in this show is Penny, Gadget's niece, and she's lots of fun. She's shown to be a pretty competent agent while having plenty of adorkable moments. It helps to have Tara Strong voice her. Gadget is incompetent, but I never get annoyed by him. Dr. Claw and Talon are pretty funny with how over the top they are. I don't really have anything to complain about. This show is great.

Phineas and Ferb (2007–2024)

A Brilliant Show
15 October 2015
Phineas And Ferb is the creation of Dan Povenmire and Jeff Swampy Marsh. The show is about the titular stepbrothers trying to make the most of their summer vacation. That right there is a great premise. Our well rounded protagonists manage to create a lot of crazy, off the wall inventions like rollercoasters, growth potions, giant board games, extreme obstacle courses, and more, all of which are awesome. We also have their older sister Candace (voiced by Ashley Tisdale) and their parents, and they all have their fun quirks to them. Their pet platypus Perry is a secret agent who fights against an evil scientist named Dr. Doofenshmirtz (voiced by Dan Povenmire). Their battles are always fun to watch, and they even help each other out sometimes. We also have the boys' best friends like Isabella and the Fireside Girls, Buford, Baljeet, Irving, and much more, and they manage to be really interesting. The show is interesting in that it has a formula yet it manages to improve over the course of 4 seasons, most likely it switches between staying true to the formula and breaking away from the formula while staying true to the spirit of the show. It's really good.

Mr. Pickles (2013–2019)

Why Am I Not Surprised
22 September 2015
I mentioned this in my review of Brickleberry, but I don't like the current mindset of adult cartoons being there just to shock people. Mr Pickles is no different. The animation is just hideous. It's like a rancid barf bag had a baby. The gore in this show is just mindless, with no sense of wit, charm, or direction. If it's meant to be serious, it's too fast paced to let anything sink in. If it's meant to be funny, then there's no sense of a joke. It's just "Here's some messed up junk because we can do it.". The characters are either bland, stupid, jerks, punching bags, or even all of the above. The show has no sense of pacing, with things going by too fast or too slow. The show needs major retooling before I can even tolerate it.

My grade: 0/10 (If I could, this would be my score)

The Replacements (2006–2022)
9/10
Real Fun Show
22 September 2015
Animation was at a bit of a low point in the mid 2000s, but there were still good shows here and there, one of them being The Replacements. The idea of having a phone that can replace people to make your life easier is an interesting one, and they really ran with the concept due to how crazy things got. The second season focused less on replacements and more on the characters and stories, which I view as a plus. Our main characters are well rounded, with Riley being my favorite. I can see why she had a bigger focus in later episodes. Admittedly, it got a bit too crazy at times, but the good was still significantly strong. I didn't mind the formulaic aspect in the first season since it did help to teach good morals. I don't have much of a problem with the show. It's plain fun.

My score: 9/10

It's Pretty Good
18 September 2015
Fish Hooks isn't a perfect show, but I like watching it. I don't mind the school related Plots since lots of TV shows have them. I think Milo, Oscar, and Bea are pretty well rounded characters bouncing off the world and people around them. The writing can get a bit stupid and the show didn't start super strong, but the show managed to be well written and entertaining all throughout. The show was originally focused more on comedy, but it became more character and story driven in later episodes, creating memorable episodes like "We've Got Fish Spirit", "Fish Prom", and "The Big Woo". The show isn't perfect, but I do like to watch it. I recommend watching this show with an open mind Abdul look more on the morality side of the show.

This Is Why I Stick To Kids Shows
18 September 2015
That title sums things up. I don't hate adult animation. In fact, I like shows like Futurama, Rick And Morty, and American Dad. Unfortunately, the mindset of most adult cartoons these days is to throw in as much gore and raunch as possible because it's "grown up". That is not grown up. That's immature, and shows like Brickleberry show why. The idea behind these people working at a nature park has a lot of ideas for storytelling and jokes, but it's wasted on tasteless shock humor and bad morality. Every single episode is poorly written and panders to the lowest common dominator. The characters are either jerks, idiots, punching bags, bland, or even all of the above. I admit the animation is nice, but good visuals can't make up for bad humor and writing. With all that said, that's why I stick to kids shows. Shows like Gravity Falls have great writing and shows like Mickey Mouse (2013) have great comedy. If you like Brickleberry, that's fine. This is just my opinion.

Talk About Underrated
18 September 2015
The idea of giving the seven dwarfs a TV show may sound like a bad idea, but that's not the case here as The 7D proves to be one of the best Disney shows. In any incarnation, the dwarfs all have distinguishable personalities, so they can play off each other pretty well. Look at episodes like "Grandpa Grumpy And The Ogre". It helps to have professional voice actors like Bill Farmer and Maurice LaMarche. The humor in this show is reminiscent of shows like Animaniacs and Tiny Toons. It helps to have many of the same writers of both shows write for this one, like Tom Ruegger and Sherri Stoner. Of course, it still has a nice Disney feel to it thanks to people like Tom Warburton, Noah Z. Jones, Leigh Allyn Baker, Kelly Osbourne, and more. I don't really have a problem with this show. It's a ton of fun and when the show teaches morals, it does it well.

Littlest Pet Shop (2012–2022)
10/10
One Of My Favorite 2010s Cartoons
15 September 2015
The new incarnation of Littlest Pet Shop is the creation of spouses Julie McNally Cahill and Tim Cahill, creators of Cartoon Network's "My Gym Partner's A Monkey" and former Warner Brothers executives. The show centers on a girl named Blythe Baxter who moves to Downtown City with her father, and gains the ability to speak to animals when she goes down a dumbwaiter into the pet shop. As the title implies, this is one of my favorite cartoons of the 2010s. It's in my top 3. The show isn't perfect, but its good outweighs the bad. Blythe is a well rounded protagonist in that she's ambitious in her dreams, but knows when to scale back. She's intelligent, kind to animals, and is a great person to be with. The pets all have their comedic moments, and have traits that make them something other than comic relief. Roger manages to be funny without crossing the line, and a good father. The Biskits are a bit annoying, but they're comedic too. Mrs. Twombly is just hilarious with her door knob obsession and strange antics, but she can be a good guardian of sorts to Blythe, and I think they have a special connection. While Sue and Jasper could be more developed, I think they're fine, and Youngmee is the best of Blythe's friends. She can cook, think, likes boy bands like Blythe, and is the only one of Blythe's friends that knows she can talk to animals. The show isn't as focused on morality, making for some meh episodes sometimes, but the show can still provide good laughs, great songs from Daniel Ingram, and plenty of genuine heart ad emotion to go along with good morals.

My Grade: 9.5/10 (A)(I rounded up for my score up there.
