Wolfwalkers (2020)
10/10
Visually beautiful and emotionally on point.
14 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this film for the following reasons. 1. The kind of animation that they have used. All hand-drawn. Like the cartoons we used to see earlier when we were kids. 2. Sean Bean has given voice to one of the characters and I'm a fan of his after Game of Thrones and LOTR: TFOTR and so, it was a treat to hear him. 3. The trope of man v/s nature (like in Pocahontas, Avatar and Atlantis: The Lost Empire). I liked all three of these films and so, there's no doubt that I'd like this one too. 4. The subtexts beside the subject matter. The main theme is what I mentioned earlier. But other than that, if you can read between the lines, you'll notice how subtly the film points out racism and also how effortlessly it showcases feminism. 5. The ironies. A girl is asked to stay away from forest and wolves by her father and those same wolves are asked to stay away from humans and hunters by a wolfwalker. A father wants her girl to not go out and speak up because he doesn't want her "caged" by the administration and for that, he puts her in another cage; doesn't let her get out and forces her to stay in. 6. The visuals. I was literally mesmerized on seeing the beautiful forests and waterfall and even the town is shown so beautifully with so much detailing. 7. The thrills. Many a times I found myself whispering "Oh, no" , "please, no" throughout the film. 8. The message. Like the above mentioned films, the message here is so important. The world is as much of other species as it ours.

This film is clearly a labour of love and you should definitively check it out. If you are a sucker for animated films, no chance you should miss it and if you don't like them much, try watching this one and maybe you'll start liking them.

P.S. : This is a fantasy film so please don't be skeptic about the things that'll happen. Don't watch with your brain, watch it with your heart and give in to the world of this stunning film.

A satisfying and wholesome experience.

Warning: Spoilers
Just finished watching this film and couldn't help stopping my tears. A story about a family who gets separated when on vacation due to the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004, this one does it perfectly. From acting, to sound, to direction, everything is good enough. Tom Holland is so good in the role of a young boy. Somewhat predictable story but full of kind and helpful characters. This film taught me how we should look out for others in times of tragedies and crises like these and how to never lose hope. Would recommend everyone to watch this film with their family.

Darbaan (2020)
9/10
Simple and straightforward story with many subtle and heartwarming moments.

Before I speak about the film, I'd like to tell that I was eagerly waiting for this film ever since I'd watched it's trailer in March and had planned to watch it on my birthday in April but like all other films that got direct OTT release, this one had the same fate. Now maybe after waiting almost 9 months, my expectations were really high with this film and that's when I learnt that it's best to never expect anything because that way you'll never be disappointed.

The performances are average except Rasika Dugal who was brilliant in her short role and Annu Kapoor's narration was perfect. There are some scenes which were really impactful. My personal favourite is the one where all family members are sitting on chairs while watching television but the caretaker sits on floor. On one hand the narrator says that the caretaker is like family but on the other hand, there's this divide which led to him sitting on the floor. This 'like' I think is what makes all the difference. There are many such subtleties if you look carefully and that works well for the film. The music here is all original and blends brilliantly with the narrative and is a plus for the film. Another thing that favours is the length of the film. Since it's adapted from a short story, the length is also short. Just 88 minutes. And that's good because the writers almost stayed true to the material and didn't try to stretch it unnecessarily. The underlying message and themes of loyalty, love and guilt have been conveyed in a nice way. So yeah, give it a watch because we surely have a dearth of good Hindi content but don't keep any expectations.

Court (2014)
10/10
Realistic and honest. A fantastic debut.
11 December 2020
After he got worldwide recognition at various film festivals for "The Disciple", I was very much intrigued to watch Chaitanya Tamhane's debut film "Court". Fortunately, I was able to watch it for free as it was being screened at European Union Film Festival - India Edition. This film is now one of my all time favourite Indian films. The reason being that it throws light on so many issues prevalent in our society but in a very subtle manner. Never did this film become preachy or forced. This is an artistic masterpiece and no wonder that it was selected as India's official entry to Oscars that year. There's so much this film talks about starting from artistic freedom to judicial and legal system of India to class and caste divide to government negligence and more. This is a film that you must watch because it is so relevant in today's socio-political climate. There's so much to learn from this film and I would have loved to talk about all my takeaways but I don't want to give any spoilers. This film is close to perfect but I wish that there was more background and exploration of accused's past life. Nevertheless, you have to watch this film. Please! I don't know if I was convincing enough but this is a film not to be missed. 10/10 for the writer, director and actors.

Miss Sloane (2016)
10/10
Thrilling, gripping and mind-blowing!
11 December 2020
I don't know how such a good movie is so underrated. Maybe because of the political statement that this gives. But from filmmaking point-of-view, this is definitely a good film. Unlike high-octane thrillers with so much action happening, this one is a very brainy and cerebral film where everything happens by planning, plotting and manipulating. This is based on a very different profession and you should watch yourself to understand this profession. If you've watched Zero Dark Thirty, you know how impactful Jessica Chastain is. Here, she is just flawless. Playing the titular character who's so eccentric and sociopathic just like Sherlock Holmes, she was amazing. About the story, it's based on US political and legal system so in the beginning it'll be a little difficult to understand but after 20-30 minutes into the film, we understand what's it all about and that's what I like about such films. Being here in India, we can learn so much about their system through such films. And the climax here is just mind-blowing. This is now one of my favourite climaxes, really. If you like such films where there's so much planning and manipulation, you definitely should check this one out. Rating : 10/10 (For the love of Jessica Chastain and Mark Strong being so good and the wonderful time I had watching this)

Jalaler Golpo (2014)
9/10
Humane, emotional, powerful.
11 December 2020
This film was Bangladesh's entry to Oscars a few years back. The film is divided into three chapters which tell us about three different phases in Jalal's life.

All throughout the film, we see beautiful shots of river and forests and rural Bangladesh.

All the chapters deal with different set of characters with Jalal being the only constant one. Personally, I liked this technique very much.

The film sheds light on superstition, greed, misogyny, sexual assault, humanity, animal cruelty among other things. The relationships of Jalal and how he deals with the hurdles of life make the film very real and his character worth rooting for. The climax of the film, though predictable, is very well timed and built up. Jalal doesn't speak much here but his actions speak for him. I feel like I know him personally after watching this. This film is for the human in us.

Laila Majnu (2018)
10/10
Subtle but pure depiction of love.
4 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
What a movie! This one clearly depicts how fears of society and the World can destroy such a beautiful relationship. And the performances by the lead actors were just great. Where we enjoy the jolly nature of Qais in the first half, Avinash Tiwary made us feel the pain of Majnu too and brought tears in our eyes.

REDEFINING LOVE!
15 December 2018
Movies like this redefine what love truly is. That every story need not have a happily ever after and that love is when you find happiness in the happiness of your lover. If you liked watching this one, you should also watch Meri Pyaari Bindu. I don't know why movies like La La Land are appreciated but when such a concept is used in India, those films neither get critical acclaim nor box office numbers. And that's why creators make those masala movies. Please support such love stories.
