Doctor Who: 73 Yards (2024)
The Best Episode of Doctor Who Since...???
This is the best episode of Doctor Who since...Peter Capaldi was The Doctor? If we disregard the David Tennant specials, which I thought were hit and miss, this is the best episode of Doctor Who since 2017. Maybe we can argue about Village of the Angels but come on, this was pretty good.
Did I fully understand this episode? Probably not.
Did I enjoy the concept? Absolutely.
Most of the time in Doctor Who a viewer knows what's going to happen next. Every time I thought I knew what this episode was going to be, it completely surprised me.
Is this about some Welsh people in a pub? No
Is this about malevolent evil stalking Ruby? No
Is this about Ruby deposing a Prime Minister? No
Is this about the consequences of traveling with the Doctor? Maybe?
In this episode The Doctor has essentially ruined Ruby's life. She loses everyone she cares about, lives a sad, pathetic life and dies alone. This is the Doctor's fault for stepping into the string but also what will inevitably happen to Ruby.
Idk, this is my interpretation but its the best I can do after watching a few days ago. Repeat viewings will help but as of right now this is a great episode.
Doctor Who: The Church on Ruby Road (2023)
The Strangest Remake of Meet the Robinsons
Remember the movie Meet the Robinsons? When you're done watching this episode on Disney Plus you can watch Meet the Robinsons and see what I mean.
It's a decent enough introduction to a new cast of characters even if the whole orphan thing is a bit of a cliche. The episode is a bit stretched out, felt more like a 45 minute episode than a 57 one.
Russel seems to be taking the approach of trolling (goblinning?) Doctor Who fans. I like his writing more than Steven Moffat (who of course they felt the need to bring back) but this show needs to work after Who was off for two years. David Tennant is waiting in the wings if this goes poorly. It's a decent enough start but if they have to go to the bullpen Doctor Who is over.
Clone High: For Your Consideration (2023)
I Shed a Tear
Somehow and episode of Clone High (2023) made me cry. I heard about this series despite not having watched the original. I thought the previous episodes were pretty generic with a few standout moments. This episode made me cry and made me feel bad about myself for crying at something so stupid. The emotional elements are so ridiculous they come back around to being genuine.
The animation styles are also amazing. Lord and Miller clearly like this type of thing considering Spiderverse and The After Party. If you were disappointed in the first few episodes of the series, this one will make you feel like the lead up was worth it.
Bullet Train (2022)
A Runaway Train of a Film
At around the 100 minute mark of this film I sat in the theatre thinking that the movie was about to wrap up. I looked down at my watch and realized that there was about 25 minutes. The movie feels longer than it is and limps to the finish line (literally and figuratively). There isn't enough of a story here to fill out the whole movie. Despite all that, Pitt and crew attempt to make a 'one location' action film that has some neat ideas, funny jokes, and engaging action scenes. This is a perfect example of a 'Sunday-Afternoon-movie'. Turn the movie on and do the laundry while they are explaining the plot to you.
Baymax!: Sofia (2022)
Come On Guys
This is a sweet episode. Deals with the nature of growing up and makes it less scary. Yes, there is some classic Disney pandering here but all in all there is a very sweet and heartfelt sentiment here.
Klaus (2019)
A better version of Santa Claus is Comin' to Town
A story of how Christmas came to be updated for a modern audience. I love the Rankin and Bass version of this story as much as the next guy but this movie does so much more. Santa has depth of character and the other characters work brilliantly. It's short, sweet and it doesn't insult your intelligence. Adding this to your holiday films is a must.
