A Prize of Gold (1955)
A strange, inferior remake of "City Lights" ?
When Richard Widmark tells the girl, for whose good cause he is stealing the money, "I have to go away for a while", he exactly copies the words of Charlie Chaplin in "City Lights" , when he was going to have to go to jail for "stealing" the money for that girl's good cause.
But "City Lights" is so much more well made and beautiful.
The bizarre plot of this film involves the use of sub-machine guns to hijack a 'plane, with the predictable injury and loss of life, in order to get the required money for a good cause !!
The film also involves rather too much of Widmark shouting at everyone; I couldn't understand why he was in such a bad mood.
Stupidest bit of a weird plot? When a military policeman doesn't remove a firearm from the sleeping, deranged Nigel Patrick character, before telling him they are giving the money back!
I suppose there are some interesting 1950s scenery, planes and cars.
John and Julie (1955)
Poignant beauty
Beautiful film. I was born in the 1940s and this film portrays the real world to me.
Except of course that I had no idea what a prostitute was then, and would have been blissfully unaware of the sadness experienced by the Moira Lister character.
Enemy at the Door: The Education of Nils Borg (1980)
Flawed plot
A very interesting episode of this very good series. Interesting to see neutral Swede and Irishman discussing which oppressor is worse, the Germans or the British.
But the plot was made unbelievable when a German officer answered the 'phone at the Irishman's bar and the publisher of the underground resistance newspaper writer gave the game away to the German officer, instead of hanging up!!
The Broken Horseshoe (1953)
Sorry
I realise that I said in my submission just now that it didn't contain a spoiler
But now I realise it did. Because I said Elizabeth Sellars turned out to be a lying crook
Checkpoint (1956)
Goof
The fork in the road shows the road from Italy to Locarno to the right. But they take the left fork which is then purported to go up the wrong side of the lake
Baker noticed the lake is on their left, whereas it should be on their right, if they were on the correct side of the lake
Proves the signs on the fork in the road are the wrong way round
I know as I have driven up the west side of the lake to Locarno
Stranger on the Shore (1961)
Telephones
It was so long ago that I watched this TV series when it was first shown, and all I remember is the opening scene of waves on the shore, and a scene where the French girl tried to use a public telephone but failed to speak to anyone, because she did not press button A when the phone was answered.
I remembered this because I had never used a telephone in my life.
The Girl Who Couldn't Quite (1950)
Beautiful film (in places)
Interesting film. I enjoyed the beautiful beginning but not the unpleasant bits and sad ending
Bit like " La vita è bella" (1999)
I wanted to add to the earlier review that said the only saucy bit was the spanking:
That reviewer must have missed Ruth pulling up her skirt to get the sketch out of the top of her stocking
Servants bumping their posteriors together looked a bit rude.
In for a Penny (1972)
Music
I remember the introductory music was "I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls"
