Vpered za skarbamy hetmana! (1993)
Bondiana from the Ukrainian village
There was kinda humorous and naive old city-legend in Ukraine, that Cossack's Hetman (head of military) Pavlo Polubotok sent all the cossacks gold to Great Britain to prevent it be taken by russians. One part of the people believed that the ship sank and it's nothing left to do to return it. Another believed that it was hold on the bank account in the United Kingdom for centuries. In the second case, profits would be so huge, Ukraine will become so rich that it will give a great amount of this money for the common folks.
This movie took this well-known in Ukraine narrative, and propose its own variant of a story continuation. Hetman was an ancestor of the main character, whose faith from now is to return the treasure to the homeland. It wouldn't be so easy, though, due to the fact that KGB, MI5 and Ukrainian mobsters are also highly interested in those money. That's where the comedy begins, because our hero is a simple Ukrainian villager who is not used to all this Bondiana stuff.
The correct title of this movie, by the way, is "Vpered, za skarbamy Hetmana!" in Ukrainian. The current one "Vperyod, za sokrovishchami getmana!" represents russian transliteration. I've sent four tickets on that topic to the contributors team, but they declined all of them. Will be grateful for your support.
Once Upon a Time in Ukraine (2020)
Homage to Tarantino, from Ukraine with love
This film is a great cocktail made of Ukrainian and Japanese mass culture and popular stereotypes added to the shaker with all the Quentin Tarantino's filmography and shook well.
There are no reasons to comprehend it as a serious work. It's as absurd, silly and explosive as it is meant to be. There are no deep thoughts or well-written dramatic lines. But there is a great amount of colorful action scenes of a high quality and a lot of ludicrousness.
It is well-known fact, Tarantino is a master of hidden or not so hidden allusions, homages and replica scenes from a variety of other film directors of the past and present. True Quentin's works admirers will be happy to see the same principles applied in a production of this movie. The only difference is the fact all those scenes are from the Tarantino's films. The serfs owners resembles slaves owners from Django, Haydamaks resembles Jews Squadron from Inglorious Bastards, messing around with eastern fighting arts stereotypes is clearly an homage to Kill Bill. And so on. Good luck to find all of them.
UKE (2020)
UKE is for Ukrainians
This documentary film is far from being described as "about hockey". There is no need to be a fan of this sport to be able to enjoy it. It's a story about journeys of different Ukrainian families through ages of history and continents-apart distances. Families that left their homeland to be able to survive or to finally feel themselves free. Years later it will allow them to left their mark in history by entering the list of greatest hockey players ever, while also remembering and respecting their roots.
I'd rather say it's more of a project than a single documentary film. Filming team did a great job creating a whole series of interviews with hockey stars of Ukrainian origin and their family members. Each segment is reasonably short, yet truly personal and deep.
Films like that are necessary for Ukraine nowadays as never before. Invasion of russia made millions of Ukrainians refugees once again. Both inside the country and abroad. A huge amount of them will return to their homes after our victory. Others will represent other countries in the future, but will also remember their roots. The new stars are rising.
Hutsulka Ksenya (2019)
Greatest music clip for Dakh Daughters
The best part of this movie is definitely a musical performances of unique Ukrainian band "Dakh Daughters". Those folk motives are filmed in a perfect harmony with a beautiful Carpathian nature. This symbiosis by itself can be a good reason to give this movie a chance and choose it for a relaxing evening.
Another positively distinct features of "Hutsulka Ksenya" are: great color palette; technical quality of filming; costumes and other visual decorations.
The weakest point of movie is scenario. It's so naive and oversimplified even for a musical comedy genre. The problem is not the fact that it doesn't have enough humor, but the fact that it's simply poorly written.
But it's still an interesting choice for an easy film, you can enjoy without being overwhelmed by complexity of the narrative.
We don't need all movies to be the Cannes drama after all.
