The Walking Dead: A Certain Doom (2020)
Fantastic ending to the Whisperers story arc
Amazing episode & certainly another instalment of TWD that I can add to my favourites list. It had everything I wanted to wrap up this Whisperer arc & can't wait to dive into the Commonwealth story next season.
A couple of reviewers that some may be familiar with here, criticises how Maggie was able to get into the Hospital to save Gabriel despite the Walker hoard surrounding it. During the sequence of events during the episode, they started leading the hoard away by playing music, during this was when Maggie & her masked friend were able to get into the Hospital as the Walkers would've been considerably thinner, if any were still left, & easier to get past & into the building. Try harder to troll next time.
I've also seen people moan about the 'lackluster' fight between Negan & Daryl vs Beta. There's only so much fighting you can do while amongst a Walker hoard, if that fight lasts any prolonged amount of time they're all dead. Look at how quickly Beta was consumed by the hoard after being defeated. Anyway, it was also an ambush on Beta, distract him, kill him. There was no way Daryl & Negan beat him in a 1v1 fight in that environment.
Finally, people are complaining that this episode 'wasn't worth the months of waiting.' Unfortunately this episode wasn't months in the making, it wasn't as if they decided themselves to take a 6 month break from airing to film a blockbuster episode that needed those months to film. Not anybody's fault this had to wait 6 months to air.
The Walking Dead: Wrath (2018)
A Season Finale of Closure
In one of my favourite episodes in TWD's history, 'Wrath' wraps up Season Eight & the 'All Out War' storyline with great effect, giving us a Season Finale that provides plenty of closure that in a way, feels like the end of the first chapter in 'The Walking Dead's' history, & sets up the next with the appropriately titled 'A New Beginning' in Season Nine.
All pressing storylines are bought to a neat ending, the two season conflict with The Saviors has ended & Negan's reign is over with him now locked up in Alexandria.
Dwight is spared by Daryl & told to go look for his wife Sherry.
Jadis, now going by the name Anne, is welcomed into Alexandria, Morgan replaces her at the Junkyard looking to heal again after his regression back into 'Clear' Morgan after the reopening of old wounds back in Season Seven.
Rosita forgives Eugene with a nice punch.
The Savior Alden is finally accepted by Maggie at Hilltop & looks to help contribute along with the other 5 communities, to working together to build a better future.
Rick's speech after sparing Negan is a scene that I love to re-visit from time to time. His delivery accompanied by the as always fantastic work of Bear McCreary's makes it one of the best.
Finally, Rick, who after honouring him by sparing Negan, pens an emotional letter to his late son, Carl, coupled with flashback which act as a beautiful closing scene to the season & arc.
This episode, just like the season, has received a lot of negativity with people saying the show is dead (already proven wrong) & describing it as the worst thing they've ever seen. Personally I think that this couldn't be further from the truth. I've seen that one of the big complaints is that the war ended with a bit of a flop as there was no final 'epic' battle. Again I feel that another battle, (of which there had been so many of throughout the season, and which was a big source of people's complaints already), was unnecessary to end the war. All Out War wasn't just the ending, it was the battles we've had all season long, the toing and froing between the communities & The Saviors. A final battle to end all battles wasn't needed, instead the war ended thanks to a character's finally selfless actions, not that of a gun's, after deciding what side was the greater good.
This Finale also helped to give a lot of potential for future season's of the show in terms of the direction of the storyline, which inevitably didn't disappoint with Season's Nine's first 5 episodes which is one of my favourite story arc's in the show & was eventually continued after Rick's departure.
One of my favourite episodes in TWD's history, the end to a hard fought war, & the start of a new beginning.
The Walking Dead: We Are the End of the World (2019)
One of the very best character driven stories of TWD
This episode will clearly divide some opinion & judging by the rating score, clearly already has, although it's hard to decipher just how many of those votes are a real indicator of how viewers (if they even watched the episode) enjoyed this very latest instalment of TWD because of the strange dedicated hatred some people have for the show.
Now yes, this episode didn't advance the main overall plot & the episode ends in the exact timeframe in which the premiere ended, the same ending scene to be precise, & will be a point that a lot of the people that disliked this episode will complain about, but that doesn't make an episode bad if done well, correctly & is meaningful.
Some of my favourite TWD episodes have been character driven stories that didn't advance the main plot but instead developed & added to the stories of select characters, relationships or groups. 'Clear' in Season 3, 'Live Bait' & 'Still' in Season 4, 'Here's Not Here' in Season 6 'The Cell' in Season 7, 'Guardians' in Season 9 & I can now add 'We Are the End of the World' from Season 10 to this list.
Now The Walking Dead may mean different things to different people, but for me the show's best & main story narrative is obviously the people that still inhabit the world. The people they are, how they adapt & change in order to survive. It's about survival, the survivors & their stories. It's episodes like this where we gain some insight into how two very interesting & brilliant characters met & came to be the people they are in the current timeline. It really fleshed out the two leading characters of the Whisperers adding more to their roles than just being 'the bad guys'. We also get to see more of Lydia's upbringing in this world, as well as some big hints as to who Beta's real identity is.
The acting & score are top notch, Samantha Morton is chilling as Alpha & Ryan Hurst once again brilliant as Beta. The fact both characters have become two of my favourites in such short time on the show is testament as to how good their portrayals are.
Overall this episode, at least for me, was a real strong one & right up there in terms of the very best episodes of the Walking Dead, showing that not everything has to be about action
The Walking Dead: The Storm (2019)
Great end to a great season
After last week's devastating episode we see in comparison, a naturally calmer episode for this week's finale, where we see just some of the effects from the episode before.
The Kingdom has finally fallen, the broken pipes, which Henry used to help with, too much to repair, alongside the visible cracks in the walls also symbolising the break down in Ezekiel's & Carol's relationship. Winter & snow make more than a brief appearance with a satisfying blizzard that our survivors have to contend with out on the road & in their communities. We also finally see some of the effects the bitter cold has on the Walkers in the universe making for some interesting & new takedowns.
Some nice character development for Lydia, still very much an outsider, whose guilt nearly becomes too much until Carol reaches out to her, & for the comedic Negan, showing off his selfless side & potentially showing us that he has changed after spending nearly 8 years behind bars. We also have the unfortunate, but sadly quite realistic break up of the King & Queen of The Kingdom, both ravaged by the loss of their son.
Finally we check back in on the Whisperers with Alpha & Beta whose animalistic nature saw them spend time away by migrating south to escape the harsh winter, (something you can pick up on if you listen to the dialog, negative reviewers) & also the mystery of the radio. A female voice calling out. Somebody we know or a stranger?
All in all, this was certainly a different type of finale we've been used to & for some, maybe not exciting enough, but it sets us up nicely for the events that will unfold in Season 10. A good character driven episode to see out what has been a brilliant season overall.
